errr i dun have much knowdlege in sound category...sry.. btw 0404 meant wad?i oni heard turtle creative and little about sound card. *Normally i juz listen to MP3 song. Juz wan to enhance the sound quality as my speaker is not the bottle net i think so...
*
You have a nice piece of speaker (the one I want to buy actually, but end up buying Klipsch Promedia GMX). Go treat yourself by buying X-Fi XtremeMusic (not XtremeAudio, its just rebadged Audigy SE) if you have the money.

But first some test, if you can hear the difference between uncompressed music (from original CD's) with compressed (and lossy) codec like mp3 then buying a new soundcard is worthwhile. Some people wont notice the difference though rclxub.gif

EDIT: 0404 is Creative professional sound card, here it is

Don't even touch the Extreme Audio, it's not even an X-Fi under the bonnet. Go for Extreme Music or Extreme Gamer

The Elite Pro also have better DAC (same DAC as the E-MU 1212M) so at stock it sounds better than the other X-Fi (for music)

For gaming, if you play Battlefiled 2 or 2142, Quake 4 you better buy the Fatal1ty since it can benefit from the 64MB X-RAM (I don't remember other games that suport this, not really a gamer nowadays). Other game doesn't benefit much, so even the lowly XtremeMusic or XtremeGamer is sufficient to reduce CPU overhead and better sound dynamics since all of the support EAX5

Hope that helps smile.gif

That just pure sarcasm, if you can't catch it. Obviously no one overclock their soundcard. And your comment doesn't make sense, whatever the memory chip that used in soundcard will make ZERO difference in audio quality

Actually lost data can't be restored anymore, crystalizer restore compress audio back to audio cd quality is just a commercial slogan by Creative, crystalizer boost the low and high frequncies and pull down the mid range as the graph before, thats why the "dynamic range" seems like boosted also...nevertheless, crystalizer still is a good feature that  suitable for the user who don't want to mess around with the EQ parameter, for the user who no need EQ, they won't need the crytalizer also... rolleyes.gif
*
I read reviews that Crystallizer works better on the Prelude than on Creative own X-Fi

QUOTE(blessedvillain @ Apr 10 2008, 10:50 AM)
just upgraded my current soundcard from Xtreme Music -> Elite Pro  thumbup.gif

well...the first impression was rather disappointing as it doesn't produce THAT much of audio improvement. That was the first impression...

after shuffling through my music collection the whole night, I slowly pickup very subtle difference between the lowest X-Fi series Xtreme Music and the highest end Elite Pro. I'm on AegoM which is considered as the lower end hifi speakers, so it might not be able to reveal the full potential of Elite Pro, but it's still a damn good speakers to certain extend. Here's what I've noticed.
1. the bass is so much smoother now. it beats harder and ends with a much smoother feel. XtremeMusic bass...well it's rather dull.
2. The treble and bass tuning within Creative Audio Console has lesser impact on the audio output. Not sure whether this is a good thing or not, but after turning up treble and Bass to maximum, the music quality is still pretty acceptable. With XtremeMusic, the audio output changes very rapidly with each bass and treble setting, and with maximum treble it's just ear piercing and with maximum bass, music becomes blurry and lost all the music details.
3. I hardly need to tune the EQ settings with Elite Pro. Previously under XtremeMusic, I really need to spend time to fine tune the EQ to my liking.

Elite Pro still produces a very bright audio output, emphasizing a lot of "effects" from your music.
*

That is the result of CS4398 DAC, as people say its very analytical

Good to hear that you hear improvement, and the driver worked most of all smile.gif

a lot of users said this is purposely done by Creative to condemn the old card so that the new card 'X-FI 2' sales will be boosted.... sweat.gif
*
They've done it on previous card, like on Audigy and Live! series. I'm not surprised to see this on future Creative cards, they always 'forgot' about the previous card no matter how powerful and great it was shakehead.gif

True, I wanted to buy X-Fi cards, but I think long and hard about it. I still undecided, but I leaning towards anti Creative, and anti Audiotrak too. They seems to be as lazy as Creative. I don't mind if the driver don't get updates as often, but if only it got no problem in the first place

offtopic, audiotrak hv prob in their driver? they dont update their driver often?
*
Yes, the HD2 driver is still on beta stage, dated February last year, I've shot them with two e-mail, the first one the replied they will get a new driver soon (last year) and recently I found more problem, shot them with another more angrier e-mail and they have not responded. You know what I do to this? I totally disintegrate my soundcard, I rather use onboard sound connected to DAC and improve the DAC with the components on the card itself

you should post the pic of your "disintegrated" HD2.  laugh.gif

just curious..what kind of problem did you encounter with the beta? maybe i missed your post in Audiotrak thread. care to mention it again?

x-meridian! good for music~ but hard to get..
agree. the support is important!
yeah wondering wats the issue huh?
*

I've posted it in HD2 bulk thread

*sigh. I recommend you guys don't look for soundcard if you really into music. A good modern onboard soundcard is good enough, and plug it to external DAC via optical or coax. That is the best way to get the best sound quality

But need to careful when choosing onboard soundcard, digital/optical out should be perfect bit-matched, but what i saw most of the onboard sound digital signal can alter by using the sound effect/EQ setting,my onboard ALC850 are real example, so i highly doubted that the digital signal are come from ADC instead pure digital bit stream....
*
I already stated modern, all the HD (read: non AC97 based) onboard are capable of bit perfect output on both digital and analog, unfortunately your ALC850 is not the new HD based one, its still AC97 based codec.

Its simple, just disable everything, on my Analog Device AD1988, I just enable digital out only and disable everything else on the driver control panel. Its quite clean, even cleaner than SB Live! SPDIF out, which just a bunch of hiss

What are you talking about ADC? The suond coming from PC is digital, not analog so it doesn't need to converted. The ADC is for recording analog sound like from your microphone. Looks like you need to read more about how PC sound works

Well done, although there are more mods you can do to improve it brows.gif

But you said 3x1000uF caps? That is a lot, considering there is only one caps for the DSP. What are the other two for?

Where are those 2x100uF caps located?

For the signal decoupling caps, you can remove and short them, it's not needed. If you concern get the same value but with higher grade like the your Pana FM's (BTW where you get these caps?)

There are other mods you should try, but only if you wanted more. I have the all the mods that you can possibly do

LOL, you still don't have the soldering iron, or lacking in components?

Well, I'm bored, so I make a dual to dual-single opamp adapter laugh.gif tongue.gif basically use one dual opamp to two single opamp sockets on my DAC. WOW, it sounds wonderful biggrin.gif

No relation to X-Fi, but well I don't know where to put it tongue.gif
