RM100 as allowance??? i heard about those municipal council members getting ridiculous allowances of RM500 and they have to spend their free time running around... RM100 is an all new low...

but you can still opt for a desk job in the national sports council right as i heard some of the athletes do to get an income...i mean RM100 can't even last you for more than 1 week jus makan alone whether you are a sportsperson or not...

i guess having the dream of becoming a sports person just isn't really feasible here... a dream is dream as they say... reality is what you have to face with.. and the career span of a sportsperson is so short that you have to make enough to ensure you have enough to last you once you are over the hill.. unlike most of us who will work until the age of 55 or even 60 nowadays...
During my time, those who chose to ride fulltime will be given a deskjob with the municipal council that supports that sport. In Selangor those days, each Municipal/Town Council will be in charge of development for one sport, example MPKlang specializes in hockey, MPPJ in cycling & football. So us cyclists was put under MPPJ la. Allowance will vary according to Ur level, national cyclists will get RM1000, state level will get RM700. But U dun go to work everyday, maybe once, twice a month. Ur job is to train & win. I wasn't one of those for the reason I mentioned earlier, I chose not to go fulltime. Other than that, we were given a place to stay, equipment & clothing are being taken care of, travel also. If we go to races we'll get additional allowance. So in my case, I only get allowance when I go for centralized training or races. In 1997 I had to do part time at McDonalds to support myself. So I train in the morning, then go to work afterwards.

i would think even if you can maintain a long career.. there is always the worry that you can get a career ending injury... although track deaths are not very known... but a bad incident can lay you in hospital for months if not ending your career...

i think edwin also stopped due to a big crash in genting highlands or something like that... even when i knew him when he was no longer a sportsmen in the late 90's early 2000's.. he still takes shit loads of risk riding road or mountain bikes... and the few unfortunate times that i saw him in a cast...

i am curious... are you working a desk job nowadays after you left more than 10 years ago...
I'm not sure why Edwin stopped. He worked as a model for a while I think. We became good friends after I beat him.

I was fortunate to have had only one serious accident thruout my track career. In the sprint finals of the Sportexcel in 1995, it was my last race as a junior, I crashed headfirst onto the velodrome right at the finish line. It knocked me out for a couple of minutes, when I came around, I was on my Dad's lap, blood all over. I was admitted into HTAR in Klang, had a scan, nothing was broken so I got out in the evening. 2 days later I was back racing in the 1st ever SUKSES. Didn't finish tho, my head was about to explode.. tongue.gif But that crash robbed me of my best chance to win as a junior. I'd already won the 1st heat, crashed in the 2nd. sad.gif

I'm working a deskjob nowadays, in Putrajaya. Nowadays I run half marathons. Seeing all those ppl riding in Putrajaya nowadays made me feel itchy to ride again... tongue.gif tongue.gif

I went to see the ACC ITT just now, met some old friends. The ITT course & also the road race course passes right in front of my office ... rclxms.gif rclxms.gif

you have a though time being an athlete... it's unbelievable that how you can survive being one after hearing your story... i'd give up without thinking twice if i were you... resilience is not my trait... haha...

i did know they don't need to be into the office everyday or full 9 to 5 for that matter... but didn't know it was as little as a couple of days a month...that must be one cool job for us lazy bums who loathe sitting in office...

as for Edwin, i remember he told me that he had a major accident on a run down genting... very badly injured and ended his career as a cyclist... he didn't told me he did modelling though... or we'd laugh at him so hard his bibs will fall off (maybe that's the reason he didn't tell us)... one of my friend worked part time at his uptown shop back then and we use to camp there whenever we have time after school (it's either there or at another friend's shop) so, we had the impression then that after his career ended, he ended up managing the uptown shop for his father....we were into MTBs then.. so, we didn't understand much of the road stories from him when he told us...

he is a nice guy... unfortunately he had not the best of help in his shop all this years to grow it bigger... you can practically chat with him about anything and everything as long as he is free in his shop... and i wasn't really a customer of his back then and still isn't one now... i just buy lotsa cycling caps from him over the years...haha

i guess if we have the passions for cycling... it need not be for competition or to have the best equipment... i find this 2 is the top most reason for most of the cyclist on the road today.. they either ride to compete or they are the equipment obsessed bunch... i myself like to ride plainly just to ride and just to enjoy the sport itself...

as long as you don't spend shit loads of $$$ buying those elite cages.. i guess all is good... they are overkill..

for floor pump... yes weight doesn't matter, but you want it to have a heavy sturdy and grippy base so it doesn't slide when you press on it...also the durability of the pump and the hoses and head... and whether parts can be replaced... haha... buying pump also can sting you..

with a 5 degree tilt so you pump more efficiently... which i call it marketing bull shit...what is called pump more efficiently is called an auto pump...one that you don't need to break a sweat using...

OI!!!... that is steel frames la... siapa mau?

that's normal.. unless you buy a big barrel one and one that is more capable to hit 200psi... maybe that'd be slightly easier to get to 120...

on the other hand... it is good that you get a workout pumping your tyres.. you are riding to exercise as well right...

I saw the chromed pumped as well, RM299? roll over my body please..

5degree? what shit is this? my job is not to pump 200 tires a day... i only pump 2 tires at once...

Well maintenance can be a problem ,after those seal got melted / harden ur pump is over..

Anyway the chrome will lost it's shininess in no time, replaced by finger prints and other stuff.. unless u are so obsessed to polish your ... pump???

it means that the pump dun stand vertically straight and tilts 5 degree towards your body direction... supposedly to make it easier when it goes up and down...

which is why i call it marketing bull shit...

actually the good thing about topeak is that they have rebuild kits for their pumps...from the hose / head assembly to the seals and covers... but they don't bring it into malaysia... they jus claim that it is much cheaper you buy a new pump...

polish your pump... sounds naughty rolleyes.gif

5.30pm.. imagination runs wild...

How about nitrogen pump use in car tire... WAIT... here is an article
http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2007/10/t...-with-nitrogen/

It's no better than your esso air pump haha, but since it's free why not!

Btw I think Butthead posted an article regarding saddle back sometime ago, the primary comfortness of saddle relies on height adjustment, most of the time saddle are adjusted too low.. I have not bother to adjust it since I bought the bike since the bike shop already adjusted it for me..

Today out of boredom I adjusted the height.. like 5cm higher.. Hmm it feels much more comfortable now.. my backache seems to goes away although I have only done a relatively short ride (7k) since I adjusted it.. will try on longer rides later on.. bring an allen key along to adjust if necessary, but it feels scary when it's about to stop cause I can hardly touch the group even when extended into tip toe position

nitrogen... don't think so lar... which shop wan to entertain you... and how much to charge? 50 cents...

did i post something like that?? bad memory.. i think i blabbed about how saddle padding affects comfort la... but saddle height... rclxub.gif rclxub.gif rclxub.gif

i only know the higher your saddle is above your handlebar.. the more you have to crouch down and strain your back... we are no gymnast you know...

wow..got people who really was an elite cyclist in this thread. that's great...although I've googled a lot for cycling tips, I still wanna hear from you guys here about climbing tips.

from what I know:

1) sitting on the saddle during a climb can save more energy than if you were to ride out of the saddle (which will put your whole weight onto your leg, thus not good in conserving energy)

2) sit more upright and hands on the hood as to allow your lung to become bigger than if you were to put your hands on the drop

3)....
4)....

anymore that i'm missing? care to share your climbing tips.....i'm going for a ride that gonna have lot of climbing sections in the coming next 2 weeks smile.gif thx guys
