Ringing of the Remembrance bell at Kranji War Cemetery

One ring for each year WW II was fought in the Pacific

Laying of wreaths of war survivors. The two women were civilian prisoners in Singapore while the man flew bombing missions over China

Remembering those that died defending Singapore and those that suffered during WW2.

The Battle of Bukit Chandu, Singapore - 14 Feb 1942
This short movie depicts the fiercest battle today in 1942, between the Japanese occupying troops and soldiers of the 1st Malay Brigade at Pasir Panjang. The Malay Brigade was commanded by the brave Lieutenant Adnan bin Saidi who fought along his men to defend Singapore’s last stand to their grisly deaths on the 14th Feb 1942.

50th War Memorial Service commemorates those who died during Japanese Occupation

user posted image

SINGAPORE - Every year since 1967, Mr Eng Yong Fu, 81, visits the Civilian War Memorial in Beach Road to pay his respects to his father who was killed during the Japanese Occupation.

In 1942, Mr Eng's father, the owner of a small cake business, was called up to help dig trenches in the ground in Siglap, where he was eventually shot dead by a machine gun and buried. His father's remains are now buried beneath the memorial.

It took Mr Eng's mother about half a year to realise her husband would never return.

"My mother was crying, praying to the gods to get him back," said Mr Eng, who was only seven years old at the time.

She was later forced to give two of her younger daughters away as she was too poor to raise seven children. After they relocated from the kampungs, Mr Eng never saw them again.

Mr Eng, who as a little boy witnessed Japanese soldiers slashing civilians and raping women, visits the memorial every year with food offerings. "My mum said to me, you don't know when he (my father) died, so on Memorial Day you need to go pay your respects."

He was among the 1,200 people who attended the 50th War Memorial Service on Wednesday, organised by the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI), to remember civilian victims who died during the Japanese Occupation.

Held at the War Memorial Park in Beach Road, representatives - including those from schools and religious organisations - took turns to pay their respects at the foot of the 67m-high war memorial.

Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Grace Fu, the guest-of-honour at the service said: "This year marks the 75th anniversary of the fall of Singapore, and also the 50th of the War Memorial... It is important for us to remember this part of the dark history of Singpore so we realise sovereignty is priceless, and it's worth protecting... We hope by having students from successive cohorts, and over decades, we are constantly reminding them that as young Singaporeans, they should resolve to dedicate themselves to protecting the country, and to learn about the resilience and resourcefulness our forefathers have shown... Never again will we subject ourselves to be occupied, never again will we allow our land to be run by another country."

Young people, she added, can engage in community service or set up social enterprises to "pledge, through actions, their dedication to Singapore".

SCCCI president Thomas Chua said: "Aside from commemorating the deceased, we need to help younger generations of Singaporeans better understand the horrors of war. We need to be vigilant in times of peace, treasure this peace, and continue to carry out total defence well."

Singapore fell to the Japanese on Feb 15, 1942. Built 25 years later, the memorial has four vertical pillars symbolising the shared war experiences of the four races here. Underneath the structure lay the remains of unknown war victims. The Japanese occupied Singapore for more than three years before surrendering to the Allied forces and returning Singapore to British control in 1945.

On Wednesday , which is also Total Defence Day, the ceremony began with an "All Clear" signal sounded by Singapore Civil Defence Force, followed by silent prayers by the Inter-Religious Organisation and the observation of a minute of silence.

Present at the memorial service were SCCCI Council Members, ambassadors and diplomats, leaders of business and clans associations, religious leaders, Singapore Armed Forces Veterans' League, uniformed groups and students.

Said Swiss Cottage Secondary School's National Cadet Corps Command Band member Lim Liang Rong, 14, who played the drums during the memorial service: "The memorial service is important, so young people like us can understand the importance of not making the same mistakes again."

Scheduled for Feb 2018, but still need sea trial and working-up period after
"Fully operational battle station" only by 2023 when there are enough F-35Bs and fully qualified pilots
Until then pinjam to USMC

I know it travels in formation but these days it gets alot easier to kill that big bullseye.

Submarine is the most undetectable way, but the carriers are built to withstand torpedoes. It would take quite a few hits I think to kill a carrier, though I agree probably just 1 or 2 hits would be a mission-kill.

Antiship missiles, Brahmos-1 is currently the most dangerous but its also very short range and needs to fire like 10+ to saturate a single Burke-class destroyer.

Hypersonic missiles are still in development - but so is Laser CIWS rolleyes.gif

QUOTE
LOEI - An air force instructor was seriously injured after he ejected from a two-seat Alpha Jet at low altitude on Wednesday morning during a training flight out of Wing 23 in Udon Thani province.

The trainee pilot later landed the aircraft safely. The incident is being investigated.

The instructor, identified as Sqn Ldr Sukhothai Srisomsai, was ejected from the aircraft above Ban Charoensuk village in tambon Na Din Dam of Loei's Muang district at about 11.15am.

The aircraft was at low altitude and the seat's parachute had not opened when he hit the ground, Royal Thai Air Force spokesman AVM Pongsak Semachai said.

Sqn Ldr Sukhothai was in the co-pilot's seat. The trainee, F/O Phuri Jullapallop, landed the plane safely at Wing 23 in Udon Thani.

Wing 23 commander Gp Capt Nithas Yupraphat thanked local people and police for quickly going to the injured instructor's aid.

Russian spy ship is spotted loitering just 30 miles from a Connecticut Naval base

user posted image

A Russian spy ship has been spotted loitering just 30 miles off the coast of a Naval submarine base in Connecticut - the latest in series of belligerent moves by their military as Moscow appears to be testing the resolve of Donald Trump's young presidency.

The SSV-175 Viktor Leonov ship moved even closer to the East Coast today, after it was spotted 70 miles off the coast of Delaware on Tuesday, Fox News reports.

While it remains in international waters, a U.S. official said the armed boat - capable of intercepting communications and sonar capability - is 'loitering'.

We are aware of the vessel's presence,' said Lt. Col. Valerie Henderson, a Defense Department spokeswoman.
'It has not entered U.S. territorial waters. We respect freedom of navigation exercised by all nations beyond the territorial sea of a coastal State consistent with international law.

The spy ship is just 30 miles away from the Naval Submarine Base New London, known as the 'Home of the Submarine Force', in Groton, Connecticut. The 100-year-old base is home to 16 attack submarines, and employs more than 9,500 active duty, reserve and civilian personnel.

The Viktor Leonov, which measures 300 feet long and 47.5 feet wide, has a crew of 200 sailors carries high-tech electronic surveillance equipment and weaponry, AK-630 rapid-fire cannons and surface-to-air missiles.

Four 'unsafe and unprofessional' Russian warplanes buzz US Navy ship

Four Russian warplanes have buzzed a US Navy ship in an “unsafe and unprofessional” manner in the Black Sea, the Pentagon has said.

The flybys happened on 10 February as the USS Porter was returning from an exercise with the Romanian navy.

An armed Russian Su-24, a supersonic attack aircraft, flew within 200 yards of the ship last week, reports NBC News.

In a separate incident, two further unarmed SU-24s came to within 300 yards of the destroyer. A Russian IL-38, an anti-submarine aircraft, also flew close at an unusually low altitude.

The US Navy tried to contact the planes by radio, but there was no response, two defence officials told the news channel.

Bizarre incident unfolds in Kazakhstan when passing lorry driver is asked for directions by a lost military gunship

This is the bizarre moment a passenger in a military helicopter asks a lorry driver for directions.

The clip, filmed in Karabutak, Kazakhstan, shows a helicopter on a road surrounded by clouds of dust.

As the shaky footage comes into focus, a man can be seen running down the road, away from the helicopter, which has landed but still has its rotor running.

After a short spell of gesturing and chatting, the man returns to the helicopter, appearing to know now where he is going.
The helicopter takes off again, and the traffic is able to move forward for the drivers to continue their journey, after the strange interruption.
