Just curious... anyone know how is the ranking of monks in thailand...? notice some are called Phra / Phra Maha / Porthan / LP etc.... how to differentiate? I understand that some level requires some sort of further studies.. and some confered by the king. Perhaps someone can clarify or provide any link to such info

Hi,
Juz sharing whatever knowledge I know..
Any monk can be called Phra, Phra=monk.
Any monk passing at least level 3 out of the 9 levels of the Pali language test can called himself Maha.
If a monk passed all 9 levels of the Pali test continuously w/o fail/resit, then he can be conferred the title of Somdej.
Phra=monk and ku=guru..So Phraku means guru of monks. There are official level Phraku/Royal Phraku where he has qualified academically and upon recommendation and much contribution, he can be conferred the title of Phraku by recommendation from by a higher level monk (like the Chao Khun of his area) to be conferred the title of Phraku by the Sangha council.
Another type of Phraku is addressed as such out of respect by devotees..but this type of Phraku is lower in rank than the official Phraku.
An official level Phraku has many levels also which he gradually progressed out of his contribution and recommended promotion.
Porthan is an address used on monks in Southern Thailand. Technically, a monk can be addressed as Porthan if he is an abbot of a temple and has served in good standing in the Sangha for a considerable period of time. However, since this is not an official title, senior monks who is well respected, has served with good standing in the Sangha for a long period of time may also be referred to as Porthan but some monks may not like to be addressed as Porthan and may preferred to be address as Maha if he is qualified academically, Luang Phor or Luang Pu.
Luang Phor means father and Luang Pu means grandfather (old monks is addressed as such) and this title/address does not require any official requirement, juz out of the respect to the monk by devotee but generally the monks should have served in good standing for a substantial amount of years in the Sangha. On a stricter note, only monks who were ordained unmarried and without children can be addressed as Luang Phor or Luang Pu, else they would only be addressed as Phor Luang. Again, since this is not an official title, some highly respected monks are still addressed as Luang Phor or Luang Pu eventhough they were ordained after having been in a marriage previously.
We can generally address any monk as Archan (teacher).
I hope my little explanation helps, FYI.

Great to see lots of Buddhist having faith in amulet here in Malaysia.

Anyway , anyone know where could plastic wrap the amulet around Puchong area ? It would be great if they could do it on the spot as time is important to most of the people which includes me.

Thanks in advanced.

U r welcome bro..Juz sharing another info..If a person is ordained as a monk b4 he gets married/have kids, then as he gets older above 40, u can call him Luang Phor..If a person is ordained after he has a family (married/have kids), then he can only be addressed as Po Luang by the correct definition..In the monk circle, it is a pride to be ordained b4 getting married and a married person ordained will not be accorded the same respect from the devotees/monks circle..Hope u find this interesting..Chok dee and chop lap to all bros/sis out there..Mung Mi Si Suk..

I was there last week..The price for the amulets there are very expensive la. I cannot effort to buy. The cheapest one is RM400++ and i noticed they dont carried new amulets. All their amulets have certificates and dont expect to have much choices either. The only guru/lp they carried who are still aliver are Ac Thong of Wat Sampher and Lp Koon. The rest of the amulets, the LP/Ac alreadly passed away. This place is like high class boutique for amulets rclxms.gif and the standard are for high end collectors. That day i even asked them, do you have lP Unn of Wat Tanggong.. they said dont have and dont know who is this LP..to them not famous kua, even LP Pien..also they dont carried.
