So quiet on photography forum these days....

Hi guys,

Any user of the tamron 17-70 f2.8 and sigma 18-55 f2.8
looking for a fast zoom lens, quite dilemma between this two

What's your dilemma? Care to elaborate a bit so we can give u suggestion?

basiclly is like iszit on par with the fujifilm 16-55mm? not sure iszit nowadays third party lens is that good already

been using canon 5ds for years on studio work and so far, tried a few third party lens before on this, but eventually still goes back to the canon glass cause it still deliver the best results

but xt4 mainly is for my outdoor leisure photography session only, iszit a good idea to get a zoom lens or just get thier fast prime lens to get the most experience out of it?

No disrespect, but for you to ask this question, I'm just wondering how long has you been out of the photography world? Tamron and Sigma are the name brand now and their lenses are highly sort after. It was such an huge stir to the Fuji photographer community when Tamron announced that they are making lenses for X mount, as well as the Sigma.

How leisure is your outdoor photography session ? Do you mean street photography? Or outdoor portrait session? Ever since my Japan trip, i've realized that, if you're venturing into unknown territory(situation) a zoom is still better than prime. The 2 options you've listed (tamron 17-70/sigma 18-50) are both fine for what you intend to shoot. These 2 third party company are very well known for their high optic quality lenses. I think it will be hard to find them making lousy lenses at least for the last few years.

As regard the fuji 16-55, it's big, heavy and expensive. The copy I got back in 2020 was actually worse than my kit 18-55 at both 23mm and 55mm (I even stopped down the 16-55 aperture to match the max aperture of the 1855 at those 2 respective focal length). It is only better than my kit lens at 16mm vs 18mm.

The way I look at it for you to concern is the price and size. For me, the extra reach of the Tamron from 51mm-70mm is not so useful. I'd much prefer the smaller size of the Sigma 18-50. Just my 2 cents. Either one you get, I don't think you will go wrong.

no worries, im not really a guy who follow the tech news and stuff, yea i do have some experience on the a7ii era when i try to reach for the mirrorless, but tbh, the tamron lens i got to pair on it still abit cacat that time,body battery life is bad and the colour is weird.

maybe i dint follow the news for a long time and dint have a chance to test out the water yet on these new third party brand.

yea, mostly street and potrait, price and size is the most concern i got here, still very new on this fujifilm world. Been using only canon so far on my whole journey

fuji 16-80mm should to be into your consideration too. The red badge 16-55 is way too heavy and bulky, not to mention the price tag.

I was using Sony E 18-105 F4.......after that lens, I told myself, never will I ever get another F4 lens. In many indoor situation, even F2.8 just barely made it, let alone a F4 lens...

yeah, I agree with the 16-80mm is bit poor for low light environment especially indoor. For outdoor under well bright, this lens is super sharp.

Are there any budget option for prime lense for between 35m to 50mm with auto focus for X mount? Preferably with auto focus on X-E1?

Like to ask for Import lens, will fujifilm Malaysia be able to service them? I don't mean like warranty claim, but more like after the warranty period. Or is there a policy that does not allow fujifilm malaysia to service import set at all (even paid)?

Yes, of couse. Viltrox 33mm f1.4 and Sigma 30mm f1.4. Both comes with Autofocus. There are also viltrox 56 as well as Sigma 56.



Yes, I've sent 2 lenses (both import set) to fujifilm malaysia to be cleaned before. To fujifilm, import set gears are just like Fuji malaysia set with expired warranty, they will charge you full service fee.

If you sent lenses/camera body to be serviced by Fuji malaysia, they will still charge you for services such as fungus cleaning, they will charge you cheaper if your gear is under warranty. For manufacturing defect of course is a different story la.

I am considering getting the imported xf16-80f4 to replace my xf18-55 which I just sold. I wonder if this is worth the extra cost for an upgrade. My main purpose of this lens is for architectural photography... the majority of the time will be shooting at F5.6 to F8. But online reviews seem to be a mixed bag.. Some claim the 18-55 kit even win in term of corner sharpness.. Does anyone have experience with this lens? I also look into the Tamron 17-70f2.8, which seems to be the one more people prefer.. it cost the same as the XF16-80. But I feel like I should stick with Fujifilm itself for more consistent color with my xf10-24

I came from Sony apsc system and one of my main lenses was the Sony PZ 18-105 F4 zoom. Ever since then, I've told myself, NEVER another F4 lens. Of course your usecase is different from mine, but having a F2.8 zoom can always close down to F4 but the reverse is not true. While I've never tried both lenses, my vote still goes to the Tamron 17-70 purely because it has f2.8 max aperture.

Just so you know, I used to own the Fuji XF 16-55 f2.8. It could be that I got a bad copy, because at 23mm and 55mm, it is actually worse than my 18-55. It only beats my 18-55 at the widest focal length (16mm vs 18mm). I'm a prime guy now, so I don't really bother to spend so much on zoom, hence I'm happy to keep 18-55 as a backup when I do need a zoom (which is only during travel).

Thanks for sharing. Look like there are indeed bad copies /or bad quality control with these zoom lens... this is what I feared. And in Malaysia, it is not like we can return the item, if we find are unsatisfied with the product. For personal usage, I also will choose Prime at any day. But for specific architecture jobs, I really need the versatility of a zoom.. This is probably the first time I embrace zoom lens in my over a decade of photography hobby . Im also coming from Sony btw... A100 is my first dslr, look at how Sony has progressed since then.

Don't feel bad la. At least you got a reason to get a new zoom lens. I would suggest you get the tamron 17-70 f2.8 or the soon to be released Sigma 18-50 f2.8. But since you said you're needing in for Architecture jobs, I would suggest you to go for the wider option, which is the tamron.

By the way, why did you jump ship from Sony to fuji ? I've jumped because I don't like the Sony jpeg colors...

I used their first Dslr since the acquire Minolta.. then go on with their mirrorless NEX system. But with sony I always must shoot in Raw.. because somehow their white balance just fucked up (probably now much improved)... after a while sick of editing every raw photos.. Come to Fujifilm.. X100S is my first fuji camera.. and since then im shooting Jpeg only.. Until recently when I do serious work only I shoot back Raw.
