Greetings everyone. I have not been in touch with the Hardware scene for awhile now.

Currently looking forward to upgrading my current rig to match current gen (kindly refer to my siggy). Most of my hardware is circa 2011-2012.

Do let me know, what should I upgrade, should I just hold out for now and etc.

Playing games like the latest Tomb Raider, The Division, Rainbow Six Siege and etc (currently just running on Medium or so settings)

Budget for upgrades RM5,000.00 - RM6,000.00 (plus extra if really necessary)

Not a rush upgrade, I can wait for better items to come out and really open to suggestions.

Also interested in maybe a 1440p monitor, if budget permits.

Hi Sifus,

Currently i have this old desktop with the specs as below:
Processor: Intel i5 3470 3.2ghz
Motherboard: P8b75-M Lx
Graphic cards: GT630
Ram - 4GB
PSU - PoweRock Kx 420

Would it be wise for me to add on 4gb of RAM and changing the graphic card in order to support newer games better like Overwatch or maybe The Witcher 3 or would it be better for me the build a whole new PC from scratch?

Your CPU is still pretty powerful, you can reuse if it is still working well, though the upgrade to Skylake i7 6700 (K or non-K) will only give you an extra of 30% performance boost, and that's when it is under full load (or in benchmark mode), your current i7 won't fall too far behind in normal usage pattern. Just overclock it to match the requirements of the latest titles if it is needed.

Basically what you "need" to upgrade (in my opinion) is just the GPU, RAM (to 16GB) and monitor (since you are interested in a 1440p monitor). If I were you, I will go for these items.

1. GTX1070 8GB (around RM 2000)
2. Grab another 8GB DDR3 RAM (around RM 250)
3. Get a 27" 1440p GSync capable monitor like Acer Predator XB271HU (around RM 3200)

Total cost will be around RM 5500+/-.

No need to build from scratch, your CPU is good enough to drive the latest GPU model.

Grab a new GPU (depends on your budget), another 4GB (or more if needed), a new PSU and you are good to go.

Thanks for the reply bro. notworthy.gif

This PC is just a multimedia/Gaming rig, no rendering and etc. Will get another 8GB RAM as suggested.

Read an article about GTX1080TI coming out by January 2017. Wondering whether I should just wait for that beast instead.

That monitor maybe difficult to get, simply because I live in Kuching. sweat.gif

2.2k is still quite hard when 23" FHD monitor and 120GB SSD are a must.

Intel Core i3 6100 - RM 497
ASRock H110M-HDV - RM 245
Kingston 8GB DDR4 2133MHz Value RAM - RM 232
Kingston SSDNow UV400 120GB SSD - RM 203
Seagate Barracuda 1TB HDD - RM 205
Corsair VS450 - RM 162
Armageddon T1x - RM 95
BenQ GW2470H - RM 473

Total: RM 2112 (ETech price inclusive of GST)

I decided to go with i3 instead of G4400 + low end dedicated GPU, i3 with onboard GPU will provide a slightly better performance in Dota 2 as well as AutoCAD, add a dedicated GPU later when you have more money.

If your monitor is still a normal 1080p 60Hz panel then GTX1080Ti will be "heavily" bottlenecked, this is proven by its little brother GTX1070 and GTX1080 already, 1440p is the sweet spot for all these high end cards, the frame rates difference between 1080p and 1440p is pretty small across all the titles.

But yea if you have the budget and can wait then why not? laugh.gif But you might to need prepare at least 4k just for it, our currency is dropping like there is no tomorrow doh.gif

As for monitor, well you can always buy from West Malaysia and ship it to Kuching if you cannot find it locally, but I know the pain, you cannot see the item "physically" till it arrives at your doorstep or high shipping fees etc.

Thanks for the fast reply bro. Assuming my budget is around RM1k for all 3 things, any specific suggestion you would give me?

Something like this will work.

Zotac GTX1050Ti 4GB GDDR5 Mini - RM 729
Kingston 4GB DDR3 1600MHz Value RAM - RM 129 <To ensure full compatibility with your current RAM, state your current RAM model if possible>
FSP Hexa+ 550W - RM 189

Total: RM 1047 (Techview price inclusive of GST)

Medium settings which hover around 50 FPS+/- with HD 530.

Just add a GPU like GTX1050 if you can increase budget to RM 2700, it cannot fit i5 + GTX1050 because upgrading from i3 to i5 will take around RM 300 (take i5 6400 as example) and you left RM 200 for nothing again sweat.gif
