You mean you changed to an ordinary battery not specifically designed for i-stop but the i-stop still works? What make and AH is that?
*

5W-30 is recommended for SKYACTIVE as per the manual.

Battery is under the standard warranty of 1year or 20,000km whichever comes first. (This is standard throughout all Battery used in all cars)

thanks for this, in my case 5w-40 has been used by the SC and it deviate from the recommended viscosity, is there anything we can do?

Yeap, due to low battery condition my car wouldn't start and i forced to had an ordinary battery replacement for temporary usage before i make the claim from SC. I had been told by the technician the I-stop may not fuctional if using the non i-stop designed battery. The battery's AH is 550.

Actually any ordinary batteries can be used in this m3, if you don't care the i-stop.

Hi lucifal, how about 5W-40 (FS) engine oil which we top-up? Is it suitable for our SKYACTIV engine?

5W-40 is also usable, but according to Manual, its recommended 5W-30. I'm not that technical , but I think the viscosity is what separate the 40 & 30 series.

No worries, i have changed mine to continental 225/40/r18. Quieter and more comfy ride than before the toyo tyres eventhough i had lower the thickness, it doesn't effect to speed accuracy and the braking. Meantime i had changed an aftermarket battery, the battery just costed me rm330 gst+installation and suprisingly the i-stop works perfectly! Guys, next time do not need to change to Q85, it may burn a big hole to your wallet!
*
May I know what is the model of the continental tyre you change to and how much it cost ?

Also pls share what is the battery that you replaced ?The SC told me normal battery can be use but it will kill off your ordinary battery much more faster than normal usage

Would like to know more on this:
1) What's the harm of using normal battery?
2) If I change the battery to normal type, how does this affect warranty of other parts?

i changed mine to continental Max Contact MC5 225/40/R18 and it costs RM550 pcs. the battery is AtlasBX 75D23L.
hopefully the battery can serve me for 12-18 months is good enough since the price is half of Q85 and this Q85 only served me 13-15months. bruce.gif

Gus, just did my 10k service in SMG Auto Sri Rampai, Setapak

share my experience here.

Drove in on Saturday 930am, there wasn't any customer over the premises, except 1 suzuki swift still on the service bay (this used to be suzuki SC).

opt for Fully syn upgrade and cancelled off all the "recommended extras" (wiper washer, engine treatment injector cleaner...bla bla)

reported some knocking noise from everytime engine restart back from istop function.

car is in service bay, noticed that mechanic placed shell hx7 instead of fully yn beside my car. When told, then only apologized "sorry took wrong"

The Shell Fully syn is 5w-40 (4L) + 1 L 5W-30, i feel a bit skeptical about this, since my previous oil was 5W-30 during 1st 1K service.

Mechanic tried to tighthen lower arm bolt for the suspected noise issue as above, in the end the lower arm bult thread got damaged and claimed its rusted due to accumulation of water (does anyone faced this?)

claimed to top up my battery water, and remainder of fluid placed in the boot, but never saw it there.

Conclusion:

1. Despite lack of customer traffic, I personally found that this SC does not gave me a peace of mind, everything needs to be double checked. God knows what happened if i wasn't there to inspect.

2. even im on fully syn now, but it feel heavier than usual, is 5W-40 meant for this skyactiv anyone can confirm?

3. Last good news, battery still can claim for free (if within 1 year or 20,000km) but replacement is only same Wet type.

4. Was told that the SC in Berjaya Industrial Park is better. any experience from you all?
*
dont waste money for fully synth oil from mazda, they are using 5w40 which you can definitely get the heavy feel and responsiveness, for me i will go for other brand like Torco SR-1

if you look smooth and better engine response then get 5w-30 or 5w-20, our car is designed for that, actually all new road cars are designed to use 5w-30

if you cant decide which sc to go, go for bermaz sc

you can join our m3 skyactiv group to find out more on this kind of info

1. it won't harm to your car, SC recommended the Q85 is because it designed to support the i-Stop. perhaps it may kill off the battery faster? the answer is yes or no, let me post again and finger cross. icon_rolleyes.gif
2. i called to SC and check this may not void your car's warranty.
hope i have answered your questions.

i would suggest others to stay with Q85 unless someone has tested other range of battery is proven to work without premature death on the battery or premature wear and tear on the alternator

mind to share your experience on Tarco SR-1, cause it is a racing engine oil just thinking to try it out but the car still under warranty and if any issue to the car may void the warranty.

my vios is using this oil for 6 years and so far no issue with engine

this time is my first time using SR-1 on my m3 and i noticed a big difference, engine response is better and less drop in speed if i let go of the accelerator compare to the shell semi synth even though they are both same 5w-30 viscosity

after you go sc to change the oil then go outside workshop drain the engine oil and pour in your desire engine oil, some member has done that

Auto wrench @ bandar sunway, they selling RM67 per liter if not mistaken, but that is like half a year ago

there are 2 type, SR-1 and SR-1R, the latter is more expensive around 75-80 per liter

there wont be an increase in power, hp and torque still same, but you will feel the car easier to rev at low rpm hence more responsive

just like how changing aftermarket drop-in air filter will notice that your car more willing to go higher speed while using stock you might suffer at 140km/h, this usually occur on N/A 1.5L car

I was informed by my SA that using non-Q85 battery may cause the battery to swell and explode, which can damage the engine due to the acid from the battery. He told me that he saw it in one of the M3 that he serviced and thus did not recommend to use non-Q85 battery.

I was charged RM720 all in to change my battery at Mazda authorised SC. The guys in M3 Facebook Club arranged for Q85 battery group buy. Can get RM500+ but without installation. I wish there's an option to sacrifice the i-Stop and use normal battery. It really doesn't make sense to spent RM300 premium for this Q85 battery when the fuel savings from i-Stop doesn't even come anywhere close.

Would appreciate other M3 owners who are using/used non-Q85 batteries to share their experiences.

My car is only 1 year 1 month, mileage only 21k and the battery just gave the istop blinking (orange) and triangle exclamation warning. Went to glenmarie HQ they said they no longer give battery exchange for free and the condition is now within 1 year and within 20k mileage. All the time when I purchased this car was told that if 1st battery kaput within 3 years SC will do a one to one exchange. Totally upset and felt cheated by this Bermaz. The company did not inform any of the owners for this newly implemented memo. They claim that this is effective on feb 1st 2017. The memo is only circulating among their staff internally and some SA. As a consumer with absolute rights, I felt cheated. If this is how Bermaz dealing with their customers, this will be my last Mazda with Bermaz.
