McLaren refugee Juan Pablo Montoya says he can understand if world champion Fernando Alonso is struggling to fit in at Ron Dennis' team.

The Colombian winner of seven Grand Prix, scored mostly for Williams, was considered one of very best drivers until a stint at McLaren sent him running for cover in NASCAR.

In the Spanish newspaper El Mundo, Montoya - who was paired at McLaren with Kimi Raikkonen until mid last year - compared his star-crossed McLaren tenure with Alonso's current struggle alongside rookie team-mate Lewis Hamilton.

"I can see that Alonso is very uncomfortable with Hamilton, especially with respect to Hamilton. 
It is just like what happened to me," he said.

The 31-year-old said he felt comfortable and competitive at Williams, "but I never felt good at McLaren.

Dennis: Don't make rules for manufacturers!








Ron Dennis has warned Formula One's governing body not to go too far in accommodating the wishes of the major manufacturers in the sport because of the transient nature of their involvement.

Speaking in a press conference that opened with a lengthy discussion about the technical side of the sport, Dennis insisted that Formula One needed to consider the future of those teams whose only focus was grand prix racing.

Fernando Alonso probably smiled to himself in the cockpit as he passed Lewis Hamilton's MP4-22 after going off in practice, but in public at least, the defending champion is not going to make an issue of Hamilton's rare error. Alonso said it is easy to end in tears on the famous street circuit.

"Thursdays here are always really slippery and we saw other drivers have problems as well," said Alonso. "I had one or two moments myself."

Alonso also played down speculation in Monaco that, in the driver briefing here, he complained about Felipe Massa's tactics at the first corner of the recent Spanish Grand Prix.

"No, we talked about the safety of the Monaco circuit," he insisted, "and little things that we can do to make it better - like putting more tyres at the first corner, where we saw two or three cars having incidents."

"I think I have said it before that this is not my favourite circuit to race on."
