how is the honda city 2009 in terms of maintenance? A relative of mine may possibly hand it down to me for free but I'm worried on the possibly high maintenance costs
*
Cost can be divided into 4 categories (exclude purchase and installments)
Here are some examples of each
1. Running cost - petrol, insurance (got ncd?), tyres
2. Regular maintenance - engine & gearbox oils, filters, spark plugs
3. Long term maintenence (older cars) - suspensions, rubber seals, mountings, exhaust, paintwork
4. Adhoc repairs - from accident, flood, manufacturing defects no more warranty, poor maintenance eg engine need overhaul

Suggest if want to own older cars such as this 14 year old City for the next say 6 years, need to have
a. some basic car maintenance knowledge
b. Gather info on your specific model (city 2009) by joining some clubs or Honda forums here
c. build up a relationship with a reliable mechanic.

Take the City for a drive, ask your relative on the outstanding problems, even visit its regular workshop and get some free feedback any major repairs needed should you take over the car.

If no major faults, you are one lucky guy to get such an offer.

Test driven a few cars already, mostly on SUV

Here are just my 2cents:-
TCC
Bad: Underpowered,

Mazda CX-30
Bad: $$$$

Proton X50
no confidence on the reliability,
engine is a fuel guzzler
3 cylinder

Subaru XV
Bad: The trunk is quite small,
being 2.0 the insurance and roadtax will be high, underpowered and the replacement axle parts (?)

Perodua Alza
Bad Handling, power, interior etc
*
So basically you need a powerful but economical 4 cyl 1.8l and below with good handling, interior, reputation and trunk.

Have you test drive the HR-V?

2. Budget. <40k (prefer closer to 30k
3. New/Used/Unreg. Any,
4. Specs. No A-segment, B-segment or larger only
5. Transmission. No manual
7. Type. Slightly prefer hatchback but sedan/suv also can
8. Priority on stability for highway drive an
passive safety (strength of chassis),
decent NVH also.
180cm and leg room is important (rear leg room as well)

replacement for my trusty old Saga BLM manual (15 years

Thanks, but having driven Saga for 15 years... I'd like a bit more room =) the legroom is not just about leg, but for my kids with their school bags (damn heavy/thick).

That being said if no good options this would be my go to, damn cheap comparatively. Wonder how it compares to a 2016 Kia Rio (going around the same price at carsome/mytukar).
*
If 2016 consider Rio ard 30+K might as well go for old Alza.

As a rough guide..

2. Budget : <60k
3. New/Used/Unreg : Any
4. Specs : at least B segment
185cm height,
every 2-3week KL to JB return to balik kampung.
nvh, comfort and fuel efficient will be my main consideration.
facing jam everyday.

persona mc2,
spacing are really nice and feel permium.
not sure about campro engine and timing belt,
future proton abandoned persona and iris hard to get part to maintenance

honda city S specbit overbudget
toyota vios with 90k never
nissan almera 83k also over budget
*
Recommend new since you too many repairs liao for old car.

B segment below Japanese trio of city, vios, almera pricing only
Sedan - Persona
Hatchback - Iriz, Myvi
SUV - Ativa
MPV - Alza

You may be right there are no future plans for lower end proton models so perhaps test drive Perodua models.

Ativa I consider the perfect city car for start stop traffic due to low end torque from turbo engine, Alza very stable for high speed crusing on highway due to C-segment wheelbase length.
Both X variant slightly above your 60K budget.

Ya wor hmm.gif i forgot about the alza, look really nice too, not sure will it underpower or not since using mybi engine. Will it be "jump" when pass bumper like old avanza?
any alza owner can share some experience?
*
Can see here

My passengers in the 3rd row quite surprised how pliant the suspension is over bumps but since it is indeed slighty underpowered due to Myvi engine moving 1150Kg instead of 1000Kg, best used as a 5 seater stationwagon with a hugh boot.

Any queries after Test Drive can ask in the Alza thread.

keeping the myvi for it’s convenience
the 1.3 variant so it doesn’t go zoom zoom on the highway

A. have a newborn I want a little more boot size.

B. sedan is for highway and roadtrips.

*
Speed kills. So Zoom2 on highway may cause newborn to be fatherless. Choose one..

A. Can upgrade Myvi to Alza since 2nd hand Myvi resale so high. No Zoom2

B. Get a brand new Corolla within 130K budget. 5 year warranty means no surprise expenditure can start saving for newborn education fund. My est 1M needed in 18 years time

Plan to buy a secondhand Proton X50 flagship (year Nov/2020) for RM96K OTR. Is the price reasonable worth to buy. Mileage only 26k. I found this car  selling in Proton 3s centre in KL but since i dont' know how to check the car whether in good condition, any recommendation foreman can help me check the car condition. The car is in Kepong/Segambut area.
*
A. There is likely a good reason why a 2.5 year car with 26K mileage cannot sell waiting for buyers.

B. What is your actual transport needs. If you use the template like others above, the members here might suggest something suitable for your 100K budget.

C. Your Current car?

Approaching 3 year old X50 depreciated <20%.
With Proton's less than ideal reliability reputation.

I checked all those listing and car reviews, concluded size/age not suitable for me.
*
Since u already have new Alza and now looking for your old Saga replacement,

a. You dont want a new Saga
b. The used larger sedans not suitable for you
c. Used hatch like Jazz not worth paying 40+K

New sedan under 50K remaining options,
Bezza new model launching possibly next yr, not recommend
Consider the Persona then starting 48K big enough for your size.

1. Brand: Any except conti
2. Budget: 70k-100k max
3. Used (2017 or newer) / new
6. Current car :Prius, CRZ (just sold), temporarily Myvi
7. Type: Sedan / Suv
8. Remarks: No hybrid car.
Looking for a fun to drive daily car, stable in highway and cornering.
9. Small skinny family with 1 toddler, occasional family trip that sits 5 max.

Considering Subaru XV, like the handling but not the looks
*
In the 120K to 130+K, many feel that the newer HRV turbo is more fun than the XV NA although XV handling really top.
The only SUV that comes close and below 100K is the X50.

Actually the Prius 1.8 is super smooth and fun on highways but guess parts may be getting expensive being CBU Japan.

What is your 5 year plan for double car ownership? Two aging cars?

Used cars will let others suggest.

Probably selling the Prius 5years down the road & get a new EV. And you’re right, Prius is a pretty good car even after all these years.
*
Side track a bit,

Suggest you get new cheap family car now as your Prius can perform fun ride duty next 5 years while you can save up for
a. New EV buy cash
b. Second child incoming?
c. Second property

Cars are just depreciating liabilities.

Depending on model year, might also need to set money aside for out of warranty hybrid battery replacement. Although if well taken care of (make sure to clean the vent filter often), Toyota batteries can last more than a decade with only minimal cell degradation.
*
Actually the vent intake is located beside the rear passenger seat, can't remember if there was a filter there. Wasn't worried about replacing the hybrid battery which should cost < 10K, it was the inverter that made me sold it off, replacement cost possibly approaching 30K once the tax exemption was discontinued. However inverter failure turned out to be quite rare for this model.
