"gorilla glass don need put screen protector"I am phone accessories seller and was a nokia lumia user.
my lumia 800 scratched and chipped in few months use without screen protector.
and lots and lots and lots of my customers who believed in gorilla glass were regret because their screen was either scratched or chipped or cracked in a short period.
one of my customer said "tiada benda yang perfect kecuali dihasil daripada Allah
So i am here summoning /k who experienced scratched or cracked gorilla glass.

Me first : Lumia 800 within 6 months usage, few scratches and chipped
It is stronger than the typical screen glass. It is true that you don't need to put on screen protector because the beefed up glass should be able to
resist any minor-heavy scratches, In reality, they are just stronger glass but unfortunately, they are still just glass. Also, don't just take it as it is. Research.
What I found out on my end, some smartphone that comes with Corning Gorilla Glass, the glass don't really live up to expectation. But many other smartphones that uses the same glass the same version (e.g. Corning Gorilla Glass or Corning Gorilla Glass 2 or etc) manages to last a long time without any scratches.
I remember one of the earlier Android phone I used, the HTC Dezire Z - used it for a few years - the phone itself is in bad shape. But the screen condition is 100% fine without any scratches (sad fact: lost the phone so can't show you the proof). Then there's Moto G (first generation) I'm using it until now. I accidentally dropped it many times before. Almost everywhere, even on tiles and tarmac. The body suffered dents and scratches. The screen though, in Moto G case, at the middle (refer to below photo) you can find a huge minor scratch a long with many other scratches as well. I don't see this on my Desire Z back then.
But the scratches are not visible at all whenever I am using the phone. Unless I shone a bright light at it like I did in the photo below. So it doesn't matter to me. Not something of a big deal that might want me to put screen protector on top of it.
Back to your question, it is not a myth, but it is a misleading understanding. Then again, its marketing.
