This is the speed im getting, im subscribed to Advance 30 and my current router is the DIR-615. Should I complain?

Ummm, that looks like a speedtest reading taken from a smartphone via wifi.

It's best to provide a reading from a PC or laptop connected via a physical connection to the router using a LAN cable and prove it's the same.

If you are getting 24Mbps+ via the LAN port, I am afraid TM is not obliged to do anything since a wifi connection is so subjective, especially since your DIR-615 is aging.

Prior to complain, I would say, test using LAN and see if you get the desired results.

Then use the unifi speed test the results as well.

As for wifi speed test, there is afew uncertainty to it and would require further testing to narrow it down.

BTW, did you test using different server within your vicinity as well...does it result in similar lower speed?

Know what if my speed is that low, I will act stupid and let TM come and fix it. Insist that the router has issue, force them to change for me. Oh well, if only my speed gets that low... laugh.gif

The thing is that a low speedtest reading can be forced and faked, and TM, especially in urban areas, have wised up to it.

Once they talk you through the process of doing a LAN cable connection speedtest through the phone, they've pretty much covered their behinds.

You could insist on a technician showing up, and as soon as he plugs his laptop into a LAN port of your router and gets a speedtest reading to their server that is within the best effort 85%, they can and probably will charge you the RM50 'wasting their time' fee.

Do it often enough, and they go into 'cry wolf' mode and stop taking you seriously after that.

Of course, I'm not saying fake cases la. If the speed is really that low and I'm not an IT Savvy today, how? They still need to entertain me. I can plug in my LAN and all but still doesn't improve?

I was talking about genuine cases and not those fake cases. What about those uncles and aunties at home? I doubt they know how to do all these. If reset port doesn't work, they will insists to just get a technician to come over. As simple as this.

Then yes, I do agree that you have a legitimate case.

Just that when you said 'act stupid' and 'force them to change', there is a whiff of trying to play the system rolleyes.gif. I was just pointing out that it's sometimes not that easy to do that these days.

A few months back, I was asked to help someone my mum knows from church. He was one of these grumpy, argumentative uncles and was dismissive of everything the guy from the Unifi CS line requested of him to help troubleshoot the issue he had with his Unifi, insisting that the problem was on their side and definitely not his. And when the technician turned up, it turned out the problem was his after all and there was nothing wrong with the line, and if he had done as the CS guy on the phone asked, it would have solved the problem there and then. Needless to say, he was charged the RM50 technical assistance fee for the house call.

Took me ages to convince the uncle that aside from his firmly-held belief that TM was an incompetent and corrupt GLC, it is not always their fault every time there was a problem with his Unifi. It was still quite hard for him to swallow his pride and go to TMpoint with me along to plead his case... but the RM50 was waived in the end.

What I took away from that experience is that TM don't give you the benefit of the doubt as much as they used to, and will not hesitate to use that RM50 charge, especially in areas where they are short on technical staff for house calls and lots of people 'yanking their chain'. And sometimes, I don't blame them, especially when there are so many people needing legitimate help.

And that's my 10 GST-adjusted sen. Take away from it what you will thumbsup.gif.

First thing to check is your cable. Maybe try another cable.

Your cable must be a CAT6 cable for transfering you a good 1gbps connection.

Check your network cable.

Is it probably an old Cat5 cable that is restricted to a maximum speed of 100Mbps.

Upgrade it to a new Cat5e cable, which is very commonly sold nowadays.

Cat5: A Little Older, A Little Slower

Category 5 cabling, also known as Cat5, is an older type of network cabling. Cat5 cables were made to support theoretical speeds of 10Mbps and 100Mbps. You may be able to get gigabit speeds on a Cat5 cable, particularly if the cable is shorter, but it isn’t always guaranteed.

Since Cat5 is an older type of cabling, you probably won’t see them very much in the store, but you may have gotten some with an older router, switch or other networking device.

Cat5e: Faster with Less Interference

Category 5 enhanced cabling, also known as Cat5e, is an improvement on Cat5 cabling. It was made to support 1000 Mbps “gigabit” speeds, so in theory, it’s faster than Cat5. It it also cuts down on crosstalk, the interference you can sometimes get between wires inside the cable. Both of these improvements mean you’re more likely to get fast, reliable speed out of Cat5e cabling compared to Cat5.

Cat6: Even Faster, But Not Really Necessary

Category 6 cabling is the next step up from Cat5e and includes a few more improvements. It has even stricter specifications when it comes to interference, and its capable of 10-Gigabit speeds in some cases. You probably won’t use these speeds in your home, and the extra interference improvements won’t make a huge difference in regular usage, so you don’t exactly need to rush out and upgrade to Cat6. But, if you’re buying a new cable, you might as well, since it is an improvement over its predecessor.

If you are referring to the one provided for new subscribers, in high-penetration areas like cities and big towns, it's the D-Link DIR-850L. In lower-penetration areas, you may still get the Innatech RG4332 or RGX4400, depending on what they have in their local storeroom.

Most of them reported DIR-850L and RGX4400 which is more than enough for average users but not for some enthusiastic

Probably not, since it's well above the 'best effort' threshold.

To be honest, a lot of people on 100Mbps would probably be really grateful for 93-94Mbps.

Ok. Thanks. My housing area is in Nilai. Still new and at the moment the TM contractors has just finished installing cable for unifi. They estimate unifi will be available in my area another 2 weeks time before raya. Also i notice there's no more RM179 package for 30MB sad.gif .
