Better mobo as in more features? If you mean quality then don't worry so much about Gigabyte mobo, no problem reported from forumers here so far and it is advertised as "ultra durable" somemore  biggrin.gif

As for PSU, it is one of the best that you can get with RM 300+ budget (Seasonic M12II EVO is also a good PSU to consider within this price range), RM 450+ can get you a tier 1 Superflower Leadex Gold 650W PSU.

GTX1070 is packing with twice of the performance of R9 290, so you might need to run on med/high settings to get a stable 60+ FPS in Witcher 3 (1080p of course) with R9 290, if you are ok with this then I think it won't bother you too much.

And please let me know your exact model of R9 290 so I can choose the case appropriately (clearance issue).

I can live with playing at high setting. Better than my crappy laptop now 😁. At least I got good mobo & psu if I want to upgrade video card next year.

It is Asus r9 290 directcu II OC.

if upgrade i5 will require 500w too?
*
500W is enough, even with i7, the power consumption of processor is relatively low.

A comparison, going from i3 to i5 will increase ~20% extra power consumption (i.e. 60W on i3 and 72W on i5).

Going from i5 to i7 will increase ~10% extra power consumption (i.e. 72W on i5 and 78W on i7).

This is just an example to show the difference of power consumption, it doesn't apply in all cases (CPU generation, overclock, task running etc.).

Any modern mobo with PCIe 2.0/3.0 x16 will be able to support modern GPU, you only get extra features like more RAM/SATA/USB ports, RAID support, CPU & RAM OC support (only Z170 for Skylake) when going for better mobo.

As for PSU, if the one you are going to get is able to support your R9 290 then I can confirm it will work with newer GPU too. Why? Because R9 290 is a power consumption monster (can consume up to 375W during full load and that's the power consumption of the GPU alone only, other components aren't counted yet), newer GPU have a much lower down power consumption now (like GTX1080 + i7 rig max power draw is just merely 250 - 300W).

Your R9 290 can fit in FD Nano S nod.gif

Airflow and temperature is fine when no dedicated GPU is installed since the only heat source is from the CPU (and light heat from HDD/PSU/mobo etc.) with CM Elite 110.

As for cable management, get a fully modular PSU and problem will be solved.

Other option would be CM Elite 130 (below RM 200 one) or do a complete swap to standard ATX case.

Need to know your budget and usage (I know it is for non-gaming but can it be more specific? browsing/torrent/download/office work/rendering etc).

8800GT is slightly weaker than the iGPU (HD 530) of the CPU (i5 6400), so just use the iGPU for gaming if you don't mind.

As for the RAM, you can just get value RAM with 2133MHz speed, non-Z170 mobo cannot utilize the extra speed and doesn't benefit from performance RAM anyway, so you can save some money here, 1 x 8GB is more ideal though 2 x 4GB is slightly faster but it will take 2 slots instead of 1, 1 x 8GB has slowly become a standard now.

1920p? I think you meant 1080p (1920 x 1080) biggrin.gif

You can consider adding another RM 60 for Gigabtye G1 GTX1060 instead for a black metal backplate and higher factory overclocked speed (can be overclocked further manually if needed).

As for the PSU, 550W is more than enough, if you have budget or can stretch the budget by a bit more, Gold unit is a good choice. Just a reminder, don't expect any huge difference in terms of performance when you go for Gold unit, it is all about the efficiency & reliability which will be reflected in the long run.

BTW the build is fine without doing any tweaks though.

Hi Terence,

I guess I bought the wrong PSU, recommendation from you is 620W, but i end up buying 520W. Will there be any issue? I guess this is the reason why I do not have 6 pin to 8 pin cable. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I need your help again as I plan to get keyboard and mouse. Below is my specs

Mouse - Not prefer Sensei or Razor as my existing Razor Mamba has the sticky rubber which is very nasty. Prefer going back to logitech for now. As long is value for money and its big. ( Cause my hand is kinda big )

Keyboard - No brand that I prefer. Just make sure is good for value and good for both typing and gaming. And it must be silent. ( no clicky sound ).

Thanks! notworthy.gif notworthy.gif notworthy.gif

520W is fine and it comes with 6/8 pin PCIe power cable.

You can refer here under "Cables" tab (PCIe).

As for the mouse and keyboard, normal non-gaming mouse and membrane keyboard will do?
