Canada PM Trudeau says no to ransom

user posted image

Canada will not pay ransoms for the release of its citizens held hostage overseas, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Tuesday (Apr 26) after the gruesome killing of a Canadian in the Philippines.

"Canada does not and will not pay ransom to terrorists, directly or indirectly," Trudeau said, vowing instead to hunt down and prosecute hostage-takers.

His comments come after Trudeau delivered the grim news on Monday that Canadian John Ridsdel had been killed by his captors - the Abu Sayyaf militant group - in the Philippines. Efforts, however, were continuing to try to secure the release of three others, including another Canadian national, he said.

In decrying ransom payouts, Trudeau explained that they helped to support criminal or terrorist activities, and "endangered the lives of every single one of the millions of Canadians who live, work and travel around the globe" as they could become targets for abduction.

Trudeau said that he and British Prime Minister David Cameron agreed in a telephone conversation earlier to press allies on the issue.

"We agreed that it is something that we are going to make sure that we do bring up with our friends and allies around the world as we come to grips with the fact that the world is a dangerous place," he said.

"We need to make sure that terrorists understand that they cannot continue to fund their crimes and their violence from taking innocents hostage," he added.

Ridsdel, fellow Canadian tourist Robert Hall, Hall's girlfriend Filipina Marites Flor, and Norwegian resort manager Kjartan Sekkingstad were kidnapped seven months ago from yachts at a marina near the major city of Davao, more than 500 kilometres from Jolo.

In a recent video, Ridsdel, a retiree in his late 60s, said his captors would kill him on Apr 25 if a ransom of US$6.4 million was not paid.

Hours after the deadline passed, police in the Philippines said two people on a motorbike dropped a head in a plastic bag near city hall on Jolo, a mostly lawless island around 1,000 kilometers south of Manila that is one of the Abu Sayyaf group's main strongholds.

U.S. Fears New Missile Race In Syria Would Help ISIS

user posted image

QUOTE
The lightweight missiles, which are easy to use and transport, also could cross Syria’s borders and threaten civilian aircraft in Jordan and in Egypt, where ISIS is expanding its presence, three officials said. ISIS claimed responsibility for the downing of a Russian jetliner over the Sinai last November
QUOTE
The CIA believes rebels have obtained a small number of MANPADs, but some fear the prospect of Russian resurrecting its air campaign against Assad’s opponents will push desperate rebels to look for MANPADs anywhere they can find them—including the black market
QUOTE
Gulf countries, led by Saudi Arabia, have pushed for giving more MANPADs to the rebels, arguing that they would reduce the efficacy of the Syrian and Russian air forces
QUOTE
“We have identified eight different models of MANPADs in Syria since 2012, including recent-generation systems not previously seen outside of government control. Some of these MANPADS are significantly more capable than the missiles most commonly found on the black market.”
QUOTE
“Most MANPADS are about 5 feet long and weigh less than 50 pounds—small enough to fit in a small boat, the bed of a pickup truck, or even the backseat of a car. Preventing their movement across borders in a place like Syria is nearly impossible.”
QUOTE
As of 2011, the U.S. government had identified 40 civilian aircraft struck by MANPADs, causing 28 crashes and more than 800 deaths

Russia may supply radiolocation, electronic warfare systems to Iran

user posted image

QUOTE
MOSCOW, April 26. /TASS/. Russia may supply additional types of armaments not subject to existing bans to Iran, the chief of the Russian Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation, Alexander Fomin, said Tuesday.

"We have contracts with Iran, other contracts are also possible, but the talk is only about the permitted objects of supply, which are not on the UN’s ban list," Fomin said when asked whether the delivery of other weapons besides S-300 missile systems was discussed.

The service chief said that the permitted armaments include small arms and other products, including non-lethal, radiolocation and electronic warfare systems etc.

Rebels doomed in northern Aleppo as ISIS nears Azaz – Map update

user posted image

Over the past 72 hours, ISIS has been making steady gains in northern Aleppo, thus capturing the villages of Tahmoul, Jariz Kafrah, Fayruziyah, Tilal Al-Hussein, and Dudiyan.

Dudiyan represents the 3rd most important town to isolated rebel forces in northern Aleppo; the loss of this town has the armed Syrian Opposition reduced to a last ditch line of defence and foothold at the cities of Azaz and Mare’.

While rebel fighters have reopened the border corridor which was temporarily cut by ISIS, their forces have been greatly pushed back since the initial rebel advances along the border.

With the Islamic State on the advance, their fighters are now less than 6 kilometers from the eastern gates of Azaz. Meanwhile, Kurdish fighters are also keen to capture the rebel-held border city as their troops are less than 3 kilometers west of the site.

Despite the backing of Turkish artillery and warplanes of the US-led coalition, rebel fighters face a very real possibility of losing the entire enclave under their control in northern Aleppo.

Now, rebel commanders must either order their troops to fight to the last drop of blood or attempt to broker a regional peace deal with ISIS.

Otherwise, rebels could retreat across the Turkish border and possibly redeploy to Idlib which is largely controlled by Jaish al-Fateh, a coalition of Islamist rebel factions.

The H225M can be refueled in-flight - both by day and at night
Since 2006 with the arrival of the first H225M Caracal aircraft, the French Air Force set itself an ambitious objective - to master in-flight refueling with its new helicopters. Ten years later, the investment has paid off, and this in-flight refueling capability has been fully mastered by the EH 1/67 Pyrénées helicopter squadron based in Cazaux.

With the support of the Italian and US Air Forces - which both provided tanker aircraft - the squadron has patiently assimilated the procedures and trained its crews. Two thirds of the squadron's pilots are now certified to perform in-flight refueling by day, with this certification even becoming standard within the unit. France is thus one the very few countries in the world to master the procedure.
This capability is now taken into account in operations. The French forces are fully aware of the added operational value a helicopter that can be refueled in flight provides in terms of extended range, stealth and speed of action. Several operational missions have already been performed in the Sahel using this capability, in particular with a non-stop 7-hour flight.

Even better, at the start of the year, the 1/67 Pyrénées squadron took a further step with the certification of its first instructors and pilots for night refueling. The procedure is performed in complete blackout conditions with the only view of the outside world being the greenish image seen in the night vision goggles and that of the FLIR installed in the nose section of the helicopter. This means that even greater concentration and precise piloting are required. To fly a helicopter only a few meters away from a transport aircraft, attached to a boom and with the strong turbulence generated by the propellers is already a complex operation. To do this at night may almost be qualified as audacious...

Impressive video footage taken by the SAA’s paramilitary faction of “Liwaa Der’ Al-Watan” shows the moment their troops take down a rebel sniper. The missile attack was conducted with a modified homemade Al-Fil rocket (the elephant) with the incident taking place at an unknown location in the countryside of Damascus.

VICE News has obtained footage taken from the headcam of an Islamic State (IS) fighter who died in March while battling Kurdish peshmerga troops in northern Iraq. The clash took place about 30 miles north of Mosul.

Unlike IS propaganda, which often presents sweeping battlefield victories, the video shows chaos, panic, and the fighters retreating.

Watch an F-22 Thread the Mach Loop — Low, Fast and Loud — War Is Boring

QUOTE
Training to fly low and fast in order to penetrate enemy air defenses, U.K., U.S. and allied warplanes wind through the Mach Loop’s valleys at high speed, affording unrivaled photo ops to any civilian plane-spotters crouching on the hilltops overlooking the Loop.

The most frequent visitors are Royal Air Force Tornado, Typhoon and Hawk fast jets and Hercules transports. U.S. Air Force F-15Es from the United Kingdom-based 48th Fighter Wing also make regular appearances.

And now there’s a new guest star—a USAF F-22 Raptor stealth fighter from the 95th Fighter Squadron based at Tyndall Air Force Base in Florida. The 95th Fighter Squadron sent four F-22s to Europe in April as part of the Pentagon’s effort to bolster NATO defenses amid increased tensions with Russia. F-22s deployed to Europe for the first time in late 2015.

An F-22 ran the Mach Loop in mid-April — and videographer “Elwyn R.” was there to document it. It’s just training, of course, but the Raptor’s impressive performance among the mountains and valleys proves that it can fight low as well as high.

China Tests New Weapon Capable of Breaching US Missile Defense Systems

user posted image

QUOTE
Last week, China has yet again successfully tested the developmental DF-ZF (previously known as WU-14) hypersonic glide vehicle (HGV)
QUOTE
The test of the high-speed maneuvering warhead took place at the Wuzhai missile test center in central China’s Shanxi Province, some 250 miles (400 kilometers) southwest of Beijing
QUOTE
“The maneuvering glider, traveling at several thousand miles per hour, was tracked by satellites as it flew west along the edge of the atmosphere to an impact area in the western part of the country,”
QUOTE
China has now tested the new weapon a total of seven times. The last launch of the DF-ZF– an ultra-high-speed missile purportedly capable of penetrating U.S. air defense systems based on interceptor missiles–occurred in November in November 2015
QUOTE
The DF-ZF HGV can allegedly reach speeds between Mach 5 and Mach 10, or 6,173 kilometers (3,836 miles) per hour and 12,359 kilometers (7,680 miles) per hour
QUOTE
The DF-ZF warhead is carried to the boundary between space and Earth’s atmosphere, approximately 100 km above the ground, by a large ballistic missile booster
QUOTE
Once it reaches that height, it begins to glide in a relatively flat trajectory by executing a pull-up maneuver and accelerates to speeds of up to Mach 10
QUOTE
The gliding phase enables the HGV not only to maneuver aerodynamically – performing evasive actions and evading interception – but also extends the range of the missile
QUOTE
[U]nlike conventional reentry vehicles, which descend through the atmosphere on a predictable ballistic trajectory, hypersonic glider vehicles are almost impossible to intercept by conventional missile defense systems, which track incoming objects via satellite sensors and ground and sea radar
QUOTE
U.S. super computers are currently ten times faster than their Chinese counterparts. “Without faster computers, Chinese researchers would have to waste time breaking down sophisticated calculations into smaller jobs so they could be run on less advanced machines,”
