Myanmar military helicopter crashes, 2 pilots rescued

Clashes continue in Deir Ezzor city as ISIS and Syrian Army trade blows over al-Sina’ah district  Over the past week, the provincial capital of Deir Ezzor has witnessed heavy clashes between the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and ISIS fighters. Most specifically, the southern district of al-Sina’ah has been the battle ground of huge ongoing skirmishes. One week ago, the district was captured by ISIS but government forces managed to recapture the entire suburb by next day. Today, an al-Masdar source based in Deir Ezzor city says that government troops control about 80% of the district with ISIS still present in some of its northern buildings. He added that 10 SAA troops had been killed during clashes here with dozens injured over the past two weeks of bloody clashes. The government troops operational in the district are made up by the SAA’s 104th Brigade of the Republican Guard, the SAA’s al-Qassem group (lead by General Ghassan Tarraf) and Sunni fighters of the al-Shaitat tribe. SYRIAN T-72 TACTICS AND THE TOW QUOTE In the now-ubiquitous YouTube video, a man and his assistant scramble to jam a drab-looking canister into what looks like a giant camera array atop a tripod. After the tube is secured in place, the viewer’s perspective inevitably switches to a gun-camera-style shot. Amidst the background of frantic utterances and roiling heat waves, a click is heard, followed by a whoosh and then the orb of fire dances into frame, growing smaller while approaching its unfortunate target QUOTE As much as these grim reels betray the state of contemporary armored tactics being employed by the beleaguered SAA, they fail to capture the dynamic, often impromptu tactics devised in the early years of the conflict. Both SAA armored paradigms, in context with the T-72, will be examined in this article QUOTE The T-72 Tank The bulk of the SAA’s Armored Divisions are filled out with the Russian T-72 MBT; specifically the T-72M and T-72M1. As such, the T-72 serves as the central character in a two act theater of war. The T-72 is a grizzled veteran of over 25 conflicts and has served in the armies of 40 countries. Elite units in the SAA, such as the Republican Guard and 4th Armored Division, have T-72 upgraded with Elementy Dinamcheskoi Zashchity (EDZ) or “Dynamic Protection Elements.” This tiled armor presents a scaly visage and helps protect the crew from high explosive anti-tank (HEAT) rounds. QUOTE The 2011 Syrian Conflict is not the first implementation of Syrian T-72s on the battlefield. In the 1982 Lebanon War, Syrian T-72s engaged Israeli M-60 tanks, recording minimal losses from tank fire in exchange. As if to foreshadow the plight of SAA tankers in 2014-2016, an estimated 11-12 of the T-72 losses reported by the Syrian Army in 1982 were credited to Israeli TOW missile teams QUOTE Early Tactics and Formations: 2011-2014 SAA tactics between 2011 and 2014 included extensive employment of the column and staggered column. Both of these formations helped minimize losses from RPG by maximizing exposure of the 560mm and 490mm of frontal turret and hull armor, respectively. The staggered column usually featured a pair of tanks; one lead tank which was trailed by one or more tanks on overwatch with overlapping “fields of fire.” In some cases where infantry insertions were needed, BMP-2 AFVs would join the T-72-lead formation. The benefit of a staggered column for T-72 crews in urban environments was a matter of capitalizing on risk. The lead tank took on the lion’s share of the risk while relying on those behind to provide close overwatch. In the example below, from the superb efforts of war correspondent Andrey Filatov, this tactic’s benefit can be seen to good effect from the perspective of a trailing T-72 driver. The SAA have enjoyed some respite from US-provided advanced weaponry due to continual efforts to cut rebel supply lines leading to the capital city. The result is an unprecedented look at how the Syrian Armored elements execute a series of formation changes, reminiscent of pre-TOW days, from aerial drone videographers, russiaworks.ru:  QUOTE Step 1: Tank A provides overwatch for threats engaging Tank B. While Tank A’s field of fire is limited, the risk posed to the crew is also minimized due to buildings and walls flanking the vehicle. Meanwhile, Tank B is able to scan a wider range of territory, while offering only its frontal and angled side armor as a viable target  QUOTE Step 2: Tank A moves up to Tank B, creating a line formation where overlapping fields of fire cover similar perspectives. Numerous gangs, including ISIS, obtained TOW launchers and ammunition through trade and conquest. As a result, the Syrian tankers experienced a shocking period of losses during 2014-2015. The long range capability of TOWs combined with a dwindling number of operational T-72s may have led the SAA to adopt more conservative tactics. While understandable, these tactics during the Northwestern Syria Offensive (April–June 2015) did little to stem the losses from terrorist TOW missile teams. In the example below, anti-government forces open fire on defensively positioned T-72s from beyond the tank’s effective range:  QUOTE The tanks above are “sky-lining.” While the hill affords superior visibility, it also provides clarity for TOW gunners locating targets against the stark, desert sky. Iran unveils new main battle tank made from US and Chinese designs from the 1960s  Earlier this month, Iran unveiled a new main battle tank, the Tiam, that appears to be a mashup of Chinese and US tanks from the 1960s, The Diplomat reports. The tank appears to have the main hull and engine of the US’ M47M Patton, a variation of the M47 Patton made in the early 1960s, and the turret of China’s type 59/69 tank, first produced in 1958. The Tiam sports a 105mm rifled main cannon, slightly underpowered when compared to the 120mm cannons found on US and German tanks, or the 125mm cannons found on newer Russian tanks. When the tank was unveiled in a public ceremony on April 13, it came out partially covered in explosive reactive armor bricks, and spewing thick black smoke from it’s engine, which was designed more than half a century ago. The tank appears to have no radar or active defense modules, the trend now in ground combat vehicles. The roll out on the 13th included a few other Iranian-built vehicles, including a self-propelled 57 mm air defence system called the Bahman, and a nuclear, biological, and chemical detection (NBC) vehicle called the Shahram, IHS Janes reports. Another Iranian tank, the Karrar, which Iranian Brig. Gen. Hossein Dehghan says is “100% Iranian made and it can even be superior than T-90 in some degrees,” according to Iran’s Mehr News Agency. China, Indonesia to boost security ties despite South China Sea spat
 Chinese and Indonesian officials pledged to boost security ties, marine cooperation and infrastructure investment, state media reported on Tuesday, after a diplomatic spat over what Indonesia called a breach of its sovereignty by the Chinese coastguard. The report came after a meeting between Chinese State Councillor Yang Jiechi, who outranks the foreign minister, and Indonesia's chief security minister Luhut Pandjaitan. Pandjaitan is visiting China this week. The two countries will strengthen defence ties including in anti-terrorism, law enforcement, curbing narcotics, as well as "marine cooperation", according to the official Xinhua news agency. Jakarta and Beijing will also work together in the fields of railway, electric power, mining, aerospace, agriculture and fisheries, Xinhua added.  Indonesia attempted to detain a Chinese trawler it accused of fishing in its exclusive economic zone in the South China Sea, prompting the Chinese coastguard to intervene last month. China has said its vessels were operating in "traditional fishing grounds". Indonesia is not embroiled in the rival claims with China over the South China Sea and has instead seen itself as an "honest broker" in disputes between China and the Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei. Pandjaitan has previously said Indonesia would maintain good relations with China but "without sacrificing Indonesia's sovereignty", and had urged Chinese ships not to enter Indonesia's maritime territory near the northern Natuna Islands, where Indonesia said the incident took place.
