Hi all,
It has been a while since I am posting here. My son is already 8 months old, how time flies.
Have anyone of you heard of Grolier home learning books for kids?

I have encountered this booth and talks during my weekend shopping.

I pretty much like the concept of the books and the talking pen (if I pronounce it correctly). The pictures are quite attractive and I hope my boy can start his reading habit from here.

The only downside is the package is expensive as it cost RM2k+ for full set of 84 books. However, it can last till 7/8 years old.

So anyone have reviews here? Thanks

Not sure about Grolier... but i do have a set which using talking pen .. my kids play for 3 months then feel bored .. although got language such ENG,CHI and Japanese

Seriously i still think parent take a book and sit down with kid and read ... that the most effic way .. learning is two way communication .. means Q&A during the reading

I agree with you as well. My wife with Waldorf background certainly do not like kids to engage with electronics so much in early years. She really push for family time if my schedule ok such as picnic and walking around garden (my daughter only 9month-old).

Grolier salesperson push too much. Experienced many times in different locations and time. We don't like them at all. The material is too expensive in my opinion.

have you done the nebulizer?

my son had a cough which lasted a while. so in the end he admitted to hospital for 2-3 days and did nebulizer around 4-5 times a day i think. after 3 days, all ok. if dont want to admit also can, but just need to go to clinic 5x per day. but we had insurance so still ok lah.

She cough most of the time at night but not frequent.

Room is clean.

Since she admitted to pre-school, started to get sick frequently.

hi all
im a new father and with my baby being 7 weeks old. he is under the care of my mother in law who is a confinement lady in "profession".

Im getting tired of how my mother in law handles the child, ie feeding Chinese herbs powder, letting baby get used to sleep on his stomach to maintain round head shape, frequently wanting to bring baby out to shopping mall which in modern days a lot of these are not strongly suggested (of coz not prohibited at least) by pediatrician...

anyone have good ideas to fend off my mother in law? or I should let her b?

sweat.gif sweat.gif Not easy to fend off your mother in law, but from my side:

1) I never agree with chinese herbs, in fact some herbs already written that no infant can take it
2) baby sleep on the tummy : NOT RECOMMENDED due to SIDS (seek expert or you keep an eye all the time)
3) Never ever bring to shopping mall (I think most of the Pediatrician/Doctors will say no)

What is wrong with chinese herbs? Unless your baby has complications with it, otherwise whats the problem.

Sleeping on stomach is good too. Of course, make sure its on a flat hard like a bed with nothing else that could suffocate him. Mine sleep better on stomach. If you want round head, then sleeping in cradle. I let them sleep in cradle since day 1 and slowly remove them from the cradle once they get around 1-1.5years old.

Bringing your baby out is good too. Letting him getting used to noisy environment so that he does not get scared easily by sound etc.

well, what your wife thought? should let her talk to parents if your didnt agree. basically old folks will get offend but for my case i hire outside confinement lady and i just let the confinement lady that dont do this...

my kids only go out clinic only and back to my parent house within 6 months , shopping mall or whatever not in our to do list reason that will expose the baby to virus/bacteria and they still not yet prepare for car seat..

what if there is an issue after taking chinese herbs, who can you complain ? how can the padae help you as there is no scrutiny on the contents from the herbs unless you going from the branded Eu Yan San.

Related to noise, there is limitation/soft baby hearing .. a loud noise/music at shopping mall may impact the baby hearing in future.. console.gif

but end of the day is up to the preference of the new father ..

If you say like that, then those families living besides construction area may have their baby deaf?

Its good to take precautions but too much is just being paranoid.

Eu Yan Sang is so pricy and so much of it went into marketing and packaging the product. There are authentic stuff out there too. Just dont buy from those pasar store enough lor.

to be honest, my wife is totally on her side and we have difficulties get eye on eye on matter as such.
at times I almost throw tantrum and ask my mother in law to shut up and leave...tats rude and bad but really I find it tough

different school of thoughts, as new father I admit I am panaroid and has been referring a lot information to the internet which all suggested against the above....

herbs - like my in law says....her daughter was brought up in such manner why not now the child...
stomach - yea my kiddo slept better on the stomach, can only keep an eye on this
going out - I don't mind once in a while when the crowd is less and make sure the baby is well covered...but my in law is suggesting to go out too frequently...i.e. go out long ours to outlet in the afternoon and want to bring the baby to family gathering at night...I think that's too taxing...

I can feel for you, it is hard with generation gap between us and them, moreover with your wife side with her mum. I guess no point to create tension and argument over traditional VS modern way of bringing up children. Good or bad, by end of the day, no one can really judge. Most important is the health of baby and growing up in happy family.

On my side, I do bring my kid to shopping mall just to buy some grocery once a week. She is 10 months old now though. In early days, I always buy grocery home. I can see she is frustrated in long outings. My wife prefer for her to stay at home most of the time.

Ya lah. But most insurance won't cover that. So need to admit then will cover all costs plus doc visit 2 times per day to monitor and adjust dosage and frequency.
