Anyone with LG LCD TV tried to set PC resolution to 1368x768 resolution?

I have a Geforce 7600GT card (which doesn't support 1366x768 or 1368x768) so previously I set to 1360x768 resolution which is supported by the LG (connected via RGB)

Now I have custom set the GC to 1368x768 and then set the LG to 1366x768 (Native) and I find that it is sharper than when previously the LG and GC was both matching 1360x768 mode.

Anyone can confirm my eyes are not playing tricks?

You're right about this. Some of the demo clips come from a dvd with high bitrates (even better than Sony's SuperBit dvds) or from an EVD player (comparable to Blu-Ray / HD-DVD). Sometimes, what you see is not what you get.

Well, I would suggest that you bring your own dvds to test, if you want a dvd with high bitrates, you can try getting those Japanese / Korean audio cds that comes with a free dvd with music videos, for example, albums from Ayumi Hamasaki, Namie Amuro, BOA, Koda Kumi, etc. Then, a normal dvd, your favourite movie as a comparison. For movies, normally the bitrates are lower than these Japanese / Korean music videos but there's no harm bringing both to test the HDTV panels' PQ, at least, you can see how well it handles various input sources of different quality.

Yes, choosing a LCD TV is quite subjective. Even at the shops some brands like Sony and Samsung has their own specialised players feeding a very good quality picture to their units. Every where you go, their units will look very good.

For a start, hope they support HDMI v1.3 deep colour. I guess the only one that support it now is Samsung's M8 series, 1080P and HDMI v1.3 deep colour plus 3 HDMI inputs (XBOX 360, PS3 & Blu-Ray / HD-DVD combo player). With LCD technology improving each year, I guess we should hold our horses first or if you can't wait, just get a normal one first, around RM4K to RM6K first. Imagine if you get a Bravia X this year and next year, Sony announced that their new model can do 1080P, HDMI v1.3, 2ms, a few HDMI inputs, this and that, possibly much cheaper, I bet you're gonna faint especially when you have spent RM15K on this baby.

I think you know that that kind of reasoning means you'll never buy anything. Are those people who bought their 42" 1280x800 LCDs last year kicking themselves now? For the same money, they can get a Full HD unit now.

At some point you make your entry, and then you just stop checking out the new models.

That's life.

Guys,

For layman like me, PQ is important, but when you start talking 'bout 1080 then I'll try to ensure that my purchase is insured for the future so must include 1080, at least 2 HDMI input and whatnot. So LCD gurus, what is available out there in the range of RM7K with those features for a 42in set? Am seriously thinking of buying. Thanks

If you are talking about 1080i (not future proof) then its possible. For 1080p, like ntgo said, almost 1.5x of you budget.

32' isn't that small, it's still bigger than viewing widescreen sources on a 34' CRT tv (4:3 aspect ratio) and secondly if your viewing distance is near, 32' is just nice because if you get a 40' one and sit very near, the PQ will not be that good as there's a recommended sitting distance for each model. Normal, HDTV panels look great at a certain distance and ugly when viewed up close especially like standing in front of the panel.

Well, not really, it depends on what you're referring to. PS3 and XBOX 360 can do 1080P, midrange dvd players can do 1080P upscaling on your standard dvd movies, HD-DVD and Blu-Ray players all out at 1080P and yes, they're available now via parallel importers but you need to use a stepdown transformer for them due to different voltage requirements. doh.gif

Well, partly true but if you're not in a rush to buy one, why buy one when the technology is not matured yet, the specs keep on changing every year and unless of course, if you're left with no choice like your CRT tv stucked by lightning, I dun see why taking a risk getting a high end model now. Those 32' models are reasonably priced, at least won't sakit hati. Imagine those paying 5 years installment plan for their Bravia X, how will they feel when they're told, nope Bravia X is not the best model from Sony, they're coming up with the next model with support for HDMI 1.3 ...... and an all new panel. doh.gif Ouucchh ..... Besides that, certain brands like Sony, Samsung, Sharp, Toshiba, LG, etc are famous for slashing their prices and sometimes might be cheaper by RM400 to RM1500 after their existing models have been around for a few months.

Well, you gotta wait, I believe you'll get all that within a few years as LCD prices are crashing down pretty fast.

By the time a product reaches `technical maturity' it becomes a commodity and will have lost its sexiness.....just like CRTs nowadays. They are cheap and perfectly functional, but I doubt if you'll drool over them. Your eyes are always looking to greener pastures even when the pockets are empty.

Consumer items exist and are sold at many price points - entry level, mid level, high end - simply because there's someone who thinks it's a good buy at each level.

It's logical everyone was to get the best value for his money, but the way people reason this out varies according to their disposable income. The super affluent will buy the new models at ridiculous prices, the less affluent will buy when the price drops to something they feel is affordable. The poverty stricken (which most of us seem to be) will look for cheap sales when products are at the end of their profitable timeline.

If you keep comparing whatever you purchase to what will be available just around the corner, you only become unhappy with your purchase. If you prefer to wait for something better to come along, you will wait forever.

I believe one way to purchase is to set your target for the minimum standard/quality you can accept, set your budget, and when the two parameters match, buy!

So for MattJ, it's simple. You want 42" Full HD at RM7K. It's not time yet. Maybe six month's time. Maybe a year. But you can be sure when that when that time arrives, your heart will go to the 60" Full HD @ RM15K instead.

Haha, if you're really lucky they may even pay you to take it away.....wasting valuable space in the storeroom.
