Hmm.. my previous post got lost - but just to update that I got a NS78 for just under RM400.  But unlike the Philips, no HDMI cable.

My quick thoughts (rather than repost whole thing).

Playstation 3 upscaling is superior to DVD player.  Just a bit sharper and clearer (tested with original and other discs).  But not much to complain from the DVD player.

Also, found that best mode for me was 720p (despite some advice to leave all the scaling to the TV).

I found that 1080p makes thin lines look too... anti-aliased... drop in details.  Hard to explain but the spears of the Rohan Horsemen in LOTR:ROTK were a bit less detailed at 1080p vs 720p.

480p looked ok, but seemed to have slightly blockier picture/noise in certain cases.  But not really noticeable.

However, do note that I'm using plasma with 1024x768 native res - so your results may be different (depending on the native res of your screen).

Finally, after testing some 'not so original discs' vs original LOTR discs.  I found that the PQ for the original was better.  Not much but noticeable as well.
*
I guess that since your plasma's native resolution is 720p, setting it to 1080p will result a worser PQ b'coz your plasma needs to downsize the resolution to fit the native pixels so the conversation will take a hit on the PQ but if you're having a Full HD plasma, that's a different story.

I have both PS3 and remote.

The only 2 issues I can see is

1) DVD Region Code 3 (PS3 is NOT DVD region free).  IE. can't play original R1 DVDs.  Thankfully Bluray region same.
2) Worries (which have not been proven but play it safe) that it's better not to keep using your PS3 to play pirated and other DVDs and eventually screw up the lens.

You could however, rip the DVD and play it via USB or internal HDD - BUT that's a big hassle and you're limited to 4GB file size - which is irritating.

Compared to buying a separate DVD player for 400 bucks (sacrifice a bit of image quality)... Err... I think no contest lah!
*
1) Yup, that sucks, if I could run Action Replay's Dvd Region X, I might be able to play Region 1 dvds on my PS3 but sadly, my PS3, the 40GB model doesn't run PS2 games or softwares. doh.gif

2) That's true, it's not meant to be treated like a dvd player. Well, there are 8GB thumbdrives from Sandisk, like the Contour series but it's still a hassle even if it's a high speed thumbdrive.

Well, price is dropping rapidly at the moment. I think soon it would be below RM2k for the basic/old model 32" LCDs.

I've checked with a couple of different shops. Seems to be included.

Maybe local packaging includes it somehow.

It don't have - insist - or just buy from somewhere else.

Well, I believe such a cable should be included if they're selling a dvd upscaling player, no point selling one but ask the customer to buy the cable seperately.

For my case, stated in the manual the box should include a component cable, but it didnt. Only has composite cable. Maybe they already replace the component with HDMI as a standard accessory.

I just came back from Courts Megastore, the one beside IKEA. Asked the salesman weather the Philips include the HDMI cable, he said no. WTF. And he straightaway point to the Sharp which costs RM499 and said "INI ADA INCLUDE HDMI CABLE"

I guess I better go Carrefour and have a look first.

It come with HDMI cable don worry, the sale guy probably know nothing, it will not stated outside the box, and also the manual said no HDMI cable is included but in fact it is, ask them to open one box and u will know.
