Bro, if possible, try to avoid S-Video cable. This is the cable of the past. Get component or HDMI for best picture quality. S-Video is more or less the same as component only.

i tried protable HDD on LG upsclaer
can read, cos my HDD is formatted in FAT32

I'm using one and connected with Samsung 40GB portable HDD. What I do is divide the hdd into two partitions (20GB each). It works but the player will onli read the files from 1st partition onli. Nway,20GB is more than enough for me.Watch the tv series (prison break, heroes etc) and anime (bleach,naruto) already felt like vommit.

After reading all the post in this thread, I've finally bought Philips DVP5986k/98 at Carrefour for RM339.00. Include free HDMI cable (Giraffe brand). 

Hmm.. my previous post got lost - but just to update that I got a NS78 for just under RM400.  But unlike the Philips, no HDMI cable.

My quick thoughts (rather than repost whole thing).

Playstation 3 upscaling is superior to DVD player.  Just a bit sharper and clearer (tested with original and other discs).  But not much to complain from the DVD player.

Also, found that best mode for me was 720p (despite some advice to leave all the scaling to the TV). 

I found that 1080p makes thin lines look too... anti-aliased... drop in details.  Hard to explain but the spears of the Rohan Horsemen in LOTR:ROTK were a bit less detailed at 1080p vs 720p. 

480p looked ok, but seemed to have slightly blockier picture/noise in certain cases.  But not really noticeable.

However, do note that I'm using plasma with 1024x768 native res - so your results may be different (depending on the native res of your screen).

Finally, after testing some 'not so original discs' vs original LOTR discs.  I found that the PQ for the original was better.  Not much but noticeable as well.
