if you are having a Degree in IT like me and i want to generalize that towrds business..then do MBA. No point degree in IT and then u do Msc. to me is a waste of time. IT is technical. MBA is general macro and micro factors that will affect your business mindsed
Btw, MBA offered some place got specialization. But here's the thing. Dont go for high end MBA. Just a normal cheap one will do. An MBA is an MBA! and not many places offeres mba so not like ah kiam's school of management can simply offer MBA. to qualify for MBA offering, a uni has to go through strict process by education ministry. |

Management is not an "absolute" qualification.
The syllabus itself its pretty much about how you apply your knowledge based on what you learn. In my business paper, my lecturer (also a MBA professor) told me this. You can have zero knowledge about management but you can still get through it with your own reasoning & experience. Most of it are real life case studies so practical experience can also be used as opposed to academic theory. Most of the theory also comes from research by professors like Henry Fayol, Mintzberg, Kotler, Johnson & Scholes,..... I think MBA is very relevant for those : 1) Already working 2) Already have a core / specialised degree (which will create a synergy with MBA) 3) Are being / going to be / have been promoted into managerial position Fresh grads should never apply for MBA unless they are going to setup their own biz or their parent practically owns the company (family based biz). |

1 thing to take note about MBA. An MBA is for those with RELEVANT working experience like executive or managers. If you are taking MBA now, you are considered matured enough to know and appreciate what management is like.
MSc is more towards upgrading of technical skills in which it can be taken by fresh grads or experienced alike disregarding working experience. |

Consider the costs of taking up an MBA, then calculate how long it will take you to ROI. It isn't worth it actually, considering that it doesn't guarantee you higher pay nor position. |

QUOTE(CrossFirE @ Sep 16 2009, 12:17 AM) When you go out to work, your MBA is meaningless, though not an absolute assertion. When you do get your MBA, your salary may not go up just because you got MBA. It all depends on your experience, competencies and deliverables. Some MNCs may take into account of your education level and re-adjust your salary scale. And that is if you are in a BIG company or maybe a financial institution etc. And when you get stabbed from office politics, bad dealing with your peers/subordinates, can't deliver results, etc, your MBA can't do you any good either. Also, how many MBA lecturers are businessmen/entrepreneurs themselves? If you talk about business, then you should also consider the amount invested into acquiring an MBA, and then calculate your ROI. 1 year? 2 years? 5 years? Then compare this to using that money to invest in other areas, and calculate that ROI. Which one earns you more? This post has been edited by happy4ever: Sep 16 2009, 12:33 AM |
