US Navy Wants New Missile for Littoral Combat Ship by End of 2016

user posted image

QUOTE
According to Fanta, equipping the LCSs with a new missile is “an absolute requirement” for the U.S. Navy. By the end of 2016 the admiral wants to have a new missile on the ships at least as a demonstration.

The U.S. Navy has rebranded the LCS as a frigate due to recent advances in effective counter-swarm defenses and is looking to increase the ships’ firepower. Naval engineers are currently studying what missile system would fit best on the LCS.
QUOTE
The Norway-based Kongsberg Gruppen arms supplier and the U.S. missile manufacturer Raytheon have joined forces to try to convince the navy to acquire the fifth-generation over-the-horizon Kongsberg Naval Strike Missile (NSM) for the LCS.

Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) also announced in April 2015 that it will offer an updated version of the Harpoon RGM-84 Block II anti-ship missile (ASM), called Harpoon Next Generation to the U.S. Navy.

Meet Russia's New High-Speed Helicopter Testbed

user posted image

QUOTE
Russia has created a highly modified variant of its venerable Mi-24 Hind attack helicopter dubbed the “Prospective Speedy Helicopter” Demonstrator, or Demonstrator PSV. This testbed aircraft aims to take Russian helicopter technology to the next level when it comes to both kinetic performance and avionics.

The unique chopper took its first flight on December 23 out of Russian helicopter giant MIL’s plant near Moscow. Designers used the Mi-24K Hind as a starting point for developing this new experimental aircraft, turning the two pilot attack helicopter into a single pilot technology demonstrator.

user posted image

QUOTE
Multiple technologies will be flown on the PSV, including new rotor blade designs and avionics. Today, the PSV is equipped with rotor blades that have curved tips that aim to improve speed and stability at higher speeds. It also has the same Klimov VK-2500 engines found in Russia’s most advanced attack helicopters, the KA-50/52 Black Shark/Alligator and Mi-28 Havoc. Each of its two engines puts out 2,400 horsepower.

The aim is for the the PSV to increase cruising speed by 30 percent over the standard Mi-24/35 Hind, achieving 193-194 kts compared to 143 kts on standard models. Top speed is also an area where MIL hopes this new technology demonstrator will show large improvements, with hopes that it will reach a top speed of a whopping 216 kts compared to 180 kts on current models. A 30 percent increase in climb rate is also one of the PSV’s goals.

If these new rotors prove their worth, MIL can install them on their Mi-28 attack helicopters (pictured below) starting around 2018, which should increase the helicopter’s cruising and top speed by 10 and 13 percent.

user posted image

QUOTE
Similar rotors could also be fitted to Mi-8/17 and Mi-24/35 helicopters, which have been produced in huge numbers over nearly half a century an continue to be built today. Curved rotor tips also are known to decrease the audible output of a rotor system, although it is unclear if this is one of MIL’s aims with their PSV testbed.

A new avionics concept is also being tested aboard this unique helo, including a modular avionics concept with open architecture developed by the Russian electronics firm KERT. This system could be adapted to a whole slew of Russian helicopters, both old and new, and would make future upgrades and enhancements much easier than with current avionics systems used by Russian helicopters. KERT also claims it will improve flight safety and drastically decrease manufacturing costs.

INTERNATIONAL MILITARY REVIEW – SYRIA, JAN. 8, 2016

The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and its allies have secured the village of Najarah in the Aleppo province after 8 days long clashes with ISIS militants there. Now, the Syrian forces are advancing north in the Ayishah direction. The pro-government forces are clashing with ISIS along the Palmyra-Homs Highway in the Homs province. On Jan.7 the SAA and the National Defense Forces (NDF) supported by Russian warplanes seized the village of Al-Bayarat pushing the terrorists units to retreat towards Palmyra. Separately, the SAA entrenched in the western countryside of Palmyra in preparation for a full-scale offensive. The clashes between the loyalists and terrorists were also observed at the village of Al-Dawa.

Last week the SAA with significant support of the Russian Airspace Defense Forces began major operations in the provinces of Daraa and Quneitra. The military operations in the south focus on the town of Sheikh Miskin located at the M5 highway. Militants seized Sheikh Miskin in January 2015 and from there have been threatening the government’s logistical corridor that runs from Damascus to Daraa.

Initially, the SAA took control of the northern parts of the town and its outlying bases, but the militants’ counterattacks led to difficult urban fighting. According to the reports, the Syrian forces lost a considerable number of military equipment. But the terrorists have also suffered heavy casualties. Separately, the SAA is advancing to take control of the town of Nawa, located west of Sheikh Miskin.

With Syrian offensives currently taking place in both northern and southern Syria, the Syrian government is continuing to push terrorists at the battlefield. Separately, the succsess of the Syrian government against the terrorists is setting a ground for the political solution among the concstructive forces involved in the conflict.

NON-LETHAL GUN WANTS TO FIRE A JET-POWERED PUNCH

user posted image

QUOTE
Ohio’s Battelle Memorial Institute has a small history with novel weapons. In October, they demonstrated an anti-drone rifle, which brought down flying machines by jamming their controls. Their latest, blandly patented as “Caseless projectile and launching system,” is a gun that fires a jet-powered, laser-guided large blunt bullet, a metal fist thrown at someone dozens of yards away.
QUOTE
Fired from a specially-made pistol, or attached to a rifle in place of a grenade launcher, the round will rely on a laser rangefinder (not yet developed) to make sure it hits its target at an appropriate velocity. If it does, it should have the concentrated pain of a sting without the concentrated death of a traditional bullet. Popular Mechanics describes how the gun, named Pogojet, works:

[Senior research scientist Jeffrey] Widder's challenge was to find a way of varying the muzzle velocity depending on the distance to the target so that the projectile always hits at the sweet spot of between 77 and 87 meters per second. His final design uses a small .50 caliber weapon firing a hard projectile that uses that gas venting strategy to hit the target at optimal speed. This variable speed makes the Pogojet safe at short range and effective at long range. Widder says it will be effective at a hundred meters, far further than any existing kinetic round.

You Can Now Buy Guns Made of Meteorite

user posted image

QUOTE
U.S. gunmaker Cabot Guns is set to introduce the ultimate in luxury firearms: a pair of 1911A1 pattern pistols made of meteorite, one of the rarest substances on Earth. The guns, which will be sold as a paired set, will likely set the buyer back a cool $1,000,000.
QUOTE
Cabot, which manufactures American-made handguns to precision tolerances, purchased a 70- pound chunk of the so-called Gibeon meteor. Discovered in Namibia in 1836, the meteor was dated to roughly 4.5 billion years ago—about the time life first came into being on Earth. About 15 tons of pounds of the meteorite have been found, and collectors can snap up small samples on eBay.
QUOTE
Cabot hints at a number of engineering challenges in making the guns but says it will elaborate at a later date. This is likely an allusion to the elemental composition to the meteorite, which is 80 percent iron and 8 percent nickel, with the remaining 12 percent small amounts of carbon, chromium, and other materials. This composition is actually closer to pure iron than it is to typical gun steel. While the guns are undoubtedly functional, the owner would have to be vigilant against rust and corrosion (though, if you're spending a million bucks on guns, it's more likely your staff will need to vigilant against rust and corrosion).

Compact firepower

It's accurate, fast and deadly. Meet one of the latest rifles in the market - the F90 Assault Rifle.

At 3.25kg, it is one of the lightest assault rifles in the market. Not only does this make it more user-friendly, its design also increases the hit rate. The latest asset of the Australian Defence Force (ADF), the F90 Assault Rifle provides a clear advantage when used in close-quarter combat.

An upgrade from its predecessor, the Austeyr F88, the F90 was developed by Thales Australia to meet the requirements of the modern-day soldier. At 4.8kg, the F88 was significantly heavier and had been used by the ADF since 1998.

Lighter, easier and faster

Similar to the F88, the F90 can be fitted with the M203 grenade launcher through a simple attachment. However, the newer gun is 1.36kg lighter even when both weapons are fully fitted with their grenade launchers.

Thales Australia Armaments Vice-President Kevin Wall said: "Our soldiers deserve the best possible equipment and the F90 delivers on all counts.

"Enhancing the Austeyr is the most cost-effective way to deliver a capability upgrade, and we've worked closely with defence and army units to design, test and manufacture this world-class weapon."

Featuring a bullpup design, the F90 allows for a shorter overall weapon for a given barrel length. With the magazine located behind the trigger, such a design allows the bullet to travel faster and with greater accuracy because of its longer barrel length. This also improves the rifle's manoeuvrability and reduces its weight.

A similar design is found in the Singapore Assault Rifle 21, which proves to be a huge advantage in urban combat as the use of long rifles is limited by confined spaces.

Thales Australia Chief Executive Officer Chris Jenkins said: "The F90 is a weapon ideally suited to the modern battlefield. Light, compact and adaptable, it offers armed forces a cost-effective upgrade with a substantial degree of future-proofing."

While working on the enhancements, Thales Australia also increased the reliability and general handling of the rifle. These were done through a redesigned butt-stock with a ribbed polymer buttplate for improved shoulder grip, a lengthened top rail, and the inclusion of a case deflector next to the ejection port so that the weapon can be fired from the left shoulder.

Other improvements include the introduction of a bolt release catch and the red dot grenade launcher sight. The former allows magazine changes to be done faster, while the latter reduces the time taken to execute a grenade firing and helps soldiers to hit their targets more accurately.

Used by the ADF, the F90 is light, accurate and more user friendly than its predecessor.

A hit with soldiers

To mark its significant enhancements, the F90 will be known as the Enhanced F88 (EF88) within the ADF. The first batch was issued to the 1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (1 RAR) for trials in June this year and they were a hit with the soldiers. Results showed that they considered the EF88 to be remarkably modular, balanced and accurate during combat and longer range shooting.

Private Jake Whitlock of 1 RAR, who was involved in a trial of the EF88, said: "The EF88 impressed everyone with its accuracy, reliability and design."

There are already plans for 1 RAR to use the EF88 during upcoming Support Company courses, jungle training and exercises.

Thales Australia was awarded AUD 100 million ($100.3 million) by the Australian Department of Defence to produce and deliver 30,000 F90s to the ADF.

The weapons issued will have two variants: a 20-inch barrel rifle and a carbine version. These are the F90M and F90 products from Thales' range, which also includes versions with grenade launchers. Deliveries have already begun and will be done in phases over six years.

Overweight due to overwork

The order to obese policemen to trim the fat or risk promotion has hit a raw nerve, with one inspector responding bluntly that they were overworked to the point of obesity.

The inspector in his early 30s, who identified himself only as Musa, said officers like him gained weight due to their hectic work schedule.

“Of course being healthy and fit is crucial as a policeman, but we work almost 24 hours a day sometimes.

user posted image

“We don’t even have time to rest, let alone have a proper balanced diet.
“We're overworked to obesity,” the policeman who is based in Sarawak said.

Musa is not alone in his opinion that Bukit Aman was not being fair in penalising obese officers. Other policemen interviewed by The Malaysian Insider said the directive from the federal police headquarters should be applied across the board, including the top brass.

On Thursday, Police director of management Datuk Zulkifli Abdullah said overweight policemen will have to undergo a training programme to get fit as obese officers risked not getting promoted or confirmed if they did not lose weight.

He was reported by The Star as saying the force had some 11,000 obese policemen, and that was a “conservative number”.

For a start, 35 chubby policemen have been selected to participate in the pilot weight-loss programme called "Trim N Fit".

A sergeant from Shah Alam, Rahman Kassim (not his real name) felt the directive should not apply to officers aged over 50 years.

"It is not suitable for old timers like us. It is difficult (to have to lose weight)," said the man, who suffers from diabetes, high blood pressure and gout. doh.gif

The get-fit programme is more suitable for new or younger cops, he added.

Rahman said the last time he worked out was two to three months ago when he participated in a physical exercise programme.

He said he was no longer thinking about promotions since he was going to retire from the force in another year and a half. doh.gif

user posted image

The president of the the Ex-Policemen's Association of Malaysia, Datuk Hassan Yusoff, disagreed, saying the programme should apply to all policemen, no matter the age.

"I remember when I was an OCPD (district police chief), cops in their 50s had no trouble exercising. We work out to have good health. If we don't do it, we get sick.

"To me, if you are in the police force or the military, you have to exercise and make sure your body is always fit and healthy. That means, you exercise twice a week.

"No matter how old you are, as a policeman you have to maintain your physical health. That is part of staying agile. Without agility, you can't chase robbers or thieves," he said.

Musa, meanwhile, said the police should not make exceptions when penalising those who were not fit and healthy.

“The standards and guidelines should be fair and apply to officers of all ranks.

“But the truth is, our top bosses are probably the ones who are obese.

“Are they going to be demoted?" he asked.

He also questioned if the same directive and punishment could be applied to other enforcement agencies.

“There are equally a high number of obese Bomba (fire department) officers,” he claimed.

Musa also raised the issue of understaffing in the Sarawak police department, saying it meant that officers like him had to work long hours to cover the work of two or three persons.

As such, he said, the force could look at staffing problems like they have in Sarawak and other problems plaguing it rather than just pick on obese policemen.

Musa claimed he gained almost 15kg since joining the force three years ago.

The gain, he said, was mainly due to his irregular working hours which resulted in bad eating habits.

Musa is hoping for a promotion this year but he fears his portly, rotund belly could end his dreams.

To overcome obesity in the force, Musa suggested that every policeman, from officers to the rank and file, be made to undergo a health exam every year.

Meanwhile, Penang's northeast district police chief ACP Mior Faridalatrash Wahid said since the order had come from the top, there was nothing else to do but obey.

"That is the boss's order. I can't comment. We cannot do anything about it except follow the order.

"We will think of what we can do to get our men and women fit," he said when asked how police officers under him felt about the directive.

In September last year, Penang police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi reportedly told his officers who were overweight to get fit so they could carry out their duties better.

He said a survey found that more than 400 cops in Penang were obese. – January 9, 2016.

Syrian Army just 200 meters from Jordanian border in Dara’a SYRIA

user posted image

The Islamist rebels of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) and Jabhat Al-Nusra (Syrian Al-Qaeda group) are off to a poor start in the Dara’a Governorate this year, as the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and their allies have captured several sites that were firmly under rebel control last year.

On Friday morning, the Islamist rebels received some more bad news inside the provincial capital of the Dara’a Governorate, as the Syrian Arab Army’s 15th Brigade of the 5th Armored Division – in close coordination with the National Defense Forces (NDF) – seized the Old Customs Building that is located just 200 meters east of the Jamrak border-crossing into the Kingdom of Jordan.

Following the capture of the Old Customs Building near the Jamrak Border-Crossing, the Syrian Arab Army’s 15th Brigade halted their advance in favor of the Syrian Arab Air Force’s powerful airstrikes that fractured the Islamist defenses by destroying the Free Syrian Army’s heavy weaponry.

The Jamrak border-crossing is located inside the Al-Manishiyah Quarter of the Dara’a Al-Balad District; it was originally captured in 2013 when the Islamist rebels launched a large offensive at the provincial capital of the Dara’a Governorate. Should the Syrian Armed Forces retake the Jamrak border-crossing, they will finally have a border point with Jordan.

Not necessary HE round must be that shape

For example, this is the general purpose HE round used for 125mm guns

US military funds research into lab-grown testicles for wounded soldiers

QUOTE
The US military is funding research into lab-grown testicles for soldiers whose battlefield injuries leave them unable to conceive children.
QUOTE
An estimated 440 soldiers wounded in Iraq alone sustained injuries that would make it more difficult, or in many cases impossible, for them to conceive children.
QUOTE
These testicles can create sperm, and could ultimately be inserted into the patients whose cells were used to grow them.
QUOTE
Some genital injuries could also be prevented by protective gear already issued to US troops, which include a Kevlar plate to cover the groin area.
QUOTE
“This groin protector is essentially a flap that hangs down in front of your groin,” he told Motherboard. “It’s really not going to do much in the case of a blast, it’s more there for getting shot. I was more worried about getting blown up.”
