WTA - can hedgehogs be kept in temperatures colder than 20C ? because i'm in Australia, and i still want a hedgehog ... it just seems odd to me that hedgehogs were introduced into New Zealand and have become a pest, i mean how do they thrive when it gets colder than freezing during winter?

from what i've read they go into hibernation? but i don't want a hibernating hedgehog ... sad.gif

Yup, they hibernate. But I think 20 to 22 degrees celcius is ok. Hamsters hibernate as well if the temperature drops too low. But 20 to 22 degrees celcius for hams are fine.

My friend once put his aircon at 16 degrees and the hamster hibernated. He thought it was dead and buried it. The ham soon regained consciousness and dug itself out. Oih! This is a true story but dont try to follow it to see what happens.

No. Hibernating hedgeghog can lead to death. But you can get a heating pad for the hedgehog.

This applies to hamsters as well. If the ham doesn't have enough fat reserves, it could starve to death while hibernating.

The best temperature is 20-27, hotter than that, hedgehogs will be less active to lower down the metabolism rate.

A lot of European and Ameriacan hedgie owners use heating pad to keep their hedgies warm. I'm not sure whether it's legal or not to keep hedgies in Australia as the authorities there is quite strict when it comes to animals.
