Sifus,
I have an issue with my bike that is pestering me, and need your experience how to diagnose.
Mine is Dahon Vitesse D8, with 52T crankset and low end Altus Derailleur (8 speed). When i exert some load on pedalling, like pick up on speed, there is a whirring sound and vibration. The harder u pedal, the more obvious it is. But when i pedal on constant load and cruise..there isnt any sound or vibration.
My initial thoughts are:
1) Sound from chain meshing with the crankteeth..but it cant be that obvious..dont have such on my other bike.
2) Loose mechanical parts? - i have tighten almost every single thing and insert soft rubber in btw brake cables and body.
3) Bad bearings on the crankshaft? - Tried spinning without chain on..not buttery smooth as it aint hollowtech stuff, but doesnt produce any sound...seems acceptable.
The only 3 possiblilties now i can think off : - Misaligned or bad rear derailleur gears (non sealed bearing type - if there is one) - The plastic guard at the end of the gear sprocket vibrating (i seriously doubt it). - Bad bearings in the cheap stock folding pedals.
Any step by step or procedures that i can follow to diagnose this..I'm pulling hairs here, including from my chest...sigh

Use a hard brush ( use a scissors to cut short a normal brush ) and brush hard on the chains, cassettes and chain rings. Can brush the FD and RD also. Then after 5 minutes, wash away with water and then use soapy water clean everything up. Been using it since I started, better than citrus degreaser or any degreaser for that matter. Just make sure the kerosene don't go into the disc brakes if you are using disc brakes.

OK I am doing this for the love of folding bikes ! I saw a rare Dr.Hon Mu P24. It's for sale in Eng Hern Bike Shop in Taiping. Quite rare nowadays and those sold during that time are keeping them! SRAM 3 speed internal hub gear plus another 8 speed conventional RD gears. Some riders says they are good but I never owned one before. The Dahon Speed tourers uses the same gear system. Suprise , suprise, Eng Hern willing to part for just RM1900 and it seems to be in good condition. Those in the hunt for a good foldies with nice specs, here's the chance. Maybe the shop will nego a bit as I just asked for the price without the intention of buying.

WD 40 penetrates and leaves a sticking residue which will repel lubricants.
