I went through a lot of routers and I can tell you more about this.

Most TP-LINK routers are Atheros based. Thus, third party firmware support is better. Plus, they are more developer friendly due to their cheap price.

High end Asus are Broadcom based. While Broadcom devices generally perform better, third party firmware support is weaker. Some drivers are proprietary and you may face lower wireless throughput on a third party firmware such as Tomato. On the bright side, AsusWRT is so good that it's hard to justify the advantages of using a custom firmware.

The performance of TP-LINK is not bad, it's just that Asus firmware is more robust and come with more features. The hardware Asus produce is more stable due to better components are being used. Again, remember that TP-LINK is much cheaper.

Which one is better? Well, it depends on your budget.

I use TP-Link N750 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router Model No. TL-WDR4300 , working like a charm after years.. Its just enough for me.. U bought the expensive router, did u use all the features? If yes then go for it, if not then why bother? hehehe. Just save ur pocket for freaking high living cost nowadays..

I not sure about the cheaper models, but those with Adaptive QoS seem to have some sort of queue management to reduce bufferbloat. I doubt it's fq_codel but it's quite good.

The latest variant of Adaptive QoS allow you to set your internet speed just like sqm on OpenWRT. It is quite effective and you can have more fine control unlike sqm on OpenWRT. Again, I don't think they are the same.
