any tips on puttying hollow areas on SD?

i bought a bowl of putty from Mr.DIY for rm6.50, it's like cream so i try to fill the hole as compact as possible but since the putty is still soft everytime i put more i end up removing some, i end up filling the hole but i know it's not compact.

left it dry for 12 hours, come back noticed parts that have big holes to fill have cracked and shrunken in, while parts with smaller holes (smaller surface areas actually) have no problem, also i push those cracked ones it's still abit soft i can push it inwards to compact it more without causing more cracks.

so what should i do next, and am i doing it wrong?

i know putty is like clay, they will shrink when dry.

Those putty from diy shops, aren't they for filling small gaps of wood and cracks?
For me if the gap/hole is deep and large, i use tamiya clay putty.
Fill the gap with scrap plastic.
Then use clay putty to cover it.
Form it up as necessary.
Let cure for 6 to 12 hours.
Sand and finishing process.

For larger than 10mm, you are better of covering it first with a piece of plastic and use putty for touch up.

Edit: tamiya epoxy putty like guarayakha posted below.
The one in tube is only suitable for less than 1 mm gap.

Wrong putty? You need to get tamiya epoxy putties that has these 2 sticks (white and yellow/brown) you have to mix together and sculpt. This one will get rock hard overnight.

yea i read premixed putty will keep shrinking, and you need A B type putty, but my question is if i buy those A B type in Ace Hardware, will i be able to preserve the unused A & B or i have to finish using them in short period. and how quick do i have to work on the putty once i mixed A & B?

2 part putty require them to mix together to be active, u can store each individual part however long u wan so long as they dont mix together. When u wan to use, just cut some section off from both part in equal amount and mix those together, store the rest.

After u mix, the hardening process will begin. U have 30 or so minute to sculpt after which it'll harden quite abit. Fully harden takes about a day.

you can try those hardware shop putty as long as they are fine putty, some putty after hardens you can get smooth finish even after sanding.

buy tamiya one to be safe, some china cheapskate use baby body powder mix with gam gajah... not sure if that works

Actually Superglue works good because it hardens quick and doesn't crack, but baby powder i dunno lol. i'm not that fond on the fillings cracking as long as the surface is good, will continue work with the DIY putty until i get the AB putty. just not sure how much it will crack over time.

Erm but PG box is huge bro.. by asking his friend to hand-carry it back, his friend need to sacrifice lots of luggage limit.
