hi, want to ask if driving from Kuala Terengganu to Hatyai (or thai border?) what are the process need to be done?

last time i went with my uncles they drive and park somewhere after the thai border(or at the thai border) where the place like duty free got alot of parking. then from there, we rent a van and the driver drop us at hatyai.

which is the best choice?
*
Your uncle's choice. Otherwise u have to bring a lot of document & buy insurance. And drviving in Hatyai is like drving in a cowboy town

Ok...time for some sharing laugh.gif

I reached Bangkok airport at night and there's the limo taxi but I didn't take it coz it's expensive. So I walked out to the main exit/entrance and there queued up immediately. It's easy to see the booth and line. There's free maps to take and assistants writing down your location on a paper. Then I showed the paper to the taxi driver and he drove us by meter. That taxi driver was very funny. He kept laughing like "HAR HAR HARRR" dunno why.......then I said to him "Please go to Citin(pronounced like seetin) Pratunam" He said ok. Then we arrived in Eastin Hotel........... doh.gif I said "No, not Eastin, CITIN" He said "Ya, Eeetin!" Then luckily I have the address in Thai language and the phone no. So he called the hotel with his cellphone and then swiftly brought us to the right place. At night, the streets are crowded with stalls(it's the Pratunam area) so it's hard for him to navigate into the hotel entrance. Nice taxi driver, charged us about 200something baht including toll. We have to pay for toll surcharge of 50 baht + another toll charge of 25 baht. Then again he laughed like "HAR HAR HARRR" and left. Weird but funny.

We checked in without problem and got a room. You can see the photos I attach here. We took a room for 3 people with extra bed. We paid 600baht per night for that extra bed. Otherwise it's just 1299baht per night + complimentary wifi but no breakfast. The restaurant serves vegetarian food. We tried the food there but not that satisfied. It's not a big deal though since we go out early and sometimes had food outside.

The room and beds.

The LCD TV, table and mirror. They've got some good English and Chinese channel. Very happy with that.

The bathroom. Very clean.

The shower. It has both overhead and the other type of shower(skipped my mind at this moment).

Citin Pratunam's a new hotel so most taxi drivers don't know the place. It's easier to ask them to go to Baiyoke Sky hotel and then walk from there to the hotel. It's only 5-10 mins walk and you can also look at shops along the way. Since it's pretty new, the rooms are clean and service is good. They've got free tuk-tuk to send you to Platinum Mall, or they'll send you to the main road if you wanna go to other places. The staff are very polite and helpful. Overall, very happy with our stay there and I'd definitely go back there if I go to Bangkok again.

We took a BTS to Chatuchak, dropping off at the Mo Chit station, that's the last station of that line. It's very easy, thanks to the forumers here, I knew what to do there. Went to change my money and bought ticket easily. And it's fast. Chatuchak is THE BEST place for me to shop. I bought like mad there laugh.gif It's impossible to walk through all shops there.

In fact, I made a mistake going to Platinum Mall but it's good experience. Now I know. I didn't find anything interesting there and bought only one pair of earring and a jacket. Maybe the only thing really nice there was the food court in my opinion. The prices of clothes there are similar or more expensive than Chatuchak, yet the quality isn't any better. You can't try the clothes, some shops don't even allow us to just wear it over our shirts. For ladies, it's quite difficult for certain clothes, not to be able to put it on and see if it looks good. And it's not easy to bargain with them. They give you wholesale price if you buy more but not much and you probably end up buying more than what you want and pay more. Due to that, I lost some precious time and by the time I went to MBK, my feet were screaming for me to stop. laugh.gif So I walked but not through all the shops and I missed the 6th floor which I think is the souvenirs floor. I think going to MBK is better than Platinum. The things are more expensive but I think they look better and are of better quality. Some shopkeepers in Platinum weren't very friendly either.

By the time we walked to Siam Discovery(opposite MBK), we're damn exhausted and my feet were getting cramped. So we didn't really shop there and went straight to Siam Center to eat. Both these malls are connected just like Ikano and The Curve. cry.gif By then it's dark and I've got no strength to walk anymore.

Centralworld was worth a visit especially B2S(huge store selling books/stationery/music), the Food Hall(large supermarket and food court) and I bought some stuff at Asian Senses just because one of the shop there sells beautiful stuff and I was there early so I get good discount for being an early bird. Tourists can also get a discount card from the info counter if you show your passport. Alas, I ran out of time and didn't get to go to Siam Paragon. I figured the things there are expensive but I thought I'd pay it a visit since it's the pride of Bangkok...but no time...actually we didn't know we can check in only 2 hours before departure time at the airport. We thought we weren't sure of the traffic and went 3 hours before. The counter only opens 2 hours before so we spent that one hour just eating and drinking and waiting...we could've gone to Paragon if we had known. There are some restaurants at the departure hall and some more after checking-in. If you want less crowd then you can check-in and find a restaurant. It's quieter. Many shops too.

One of those days, we went to Ayuthaya. We're lucky we knew someone there and he came with a Thai colleague. They brought us to Ayuthaya and we visited some sites. I felt like we were somewhat in Angkor Wat laugh.gif It was nice and because the weather was cool, even during noon, we weren't hot and sweaty. Very impressive visit. Great thing that day was that the friends brought us to eat by the riverside(Chao Phraya) and they knew what to order so they ordered some really really delicious local food!

Funny thing there was when they played the national anthem, we were buying tickets at the BTS station and suddenly everyone stopped and stood up. And another time was when I was crossing from MBK to Discovery. Suddenly the police stopped everyone and chased everyone away from the bridge...then everyone stopped again...after that I asked the police, he said "King!" Apparently the king just went passed...I saw some cars...must be them.

People are generally friendly and helpful. When I was in Chatuchak I didn' know how to order food. And a Thai Chinese sitting beside me helped me out voluntarily. He speaks Mandarin so that was helpful. And others helped me with the location, etc. I always ask the locals how much tuk-tuks cost going from one place to another so I won't be cheated. And I always ask which direction to take the taxi/tuk-tuk coz I don't want them to make a huge U-turn and charge me more. You can get a BTS map at the BTS station. It's all very convenient.

On the last day, as I was crossing the road, a lady approached us and she said "Be careful when you cross the road! Yesterday two people crossed and got hit by car! Where u go?? Centralworld?! It's not open! Today Buddha Day....not open! What you wanna buy?" Sounds fishy so I just said I was gonna walk around. And she left. Gotta be a bit cautious.

So there! *phew* sweat.gif Hope my experienced helped some of you. If you need to know anything else, please ask me. And disclaimer: everything said above are solely my opinion. laugh.gif

Its Monday actually, when people wear the yellow shirt. The King is prolly one of the more respectable royalty you'll find in the world. Very charitable and open minded. If you understood what they do, you wouldn't really think its crazy at all. No offense, but our royalty really should be a bit more like the Thai royalty.

oh my bad. i think i got the friday thing because today is friday. hahahaha.

yeah. in thailand the king is the most revered man. probably of all the kings in the world. i talked to a few taxi drivers and they would start crying when talking bout how the king is getting old and stuff like that. its really amazing. like vermins said. compared to malaysia. only recently has the royalty here been more active. since the elections last year. other than that usually they just sit idly in their nice homes and nice cars. nod.gif

i just think its a bit odd that im going to go watch a shootemup type bloodbath filled with sexscenes and what not movie and i got to stand up and pay respect to the king in the theater before the movie. that i think its a bit odd.

Ahhh! That's what the yellow shirts are! I saw them selling and wearing them with a logo that looks royal. I knew it has something to do with the king. And the song I heard when they stood at the BTS station might be the king's anthem, not the national anthem...or maybe there's no difference. rclxub.gif

I agree. I watched a documentary about the Thai king during my flight back from Nepal to Malaysia some time ago. It's because of him that Thailand progressed and the way he treated his people and the poor, it was incredible. Actually that awe and respect the Thais feel for their king sort of rubbed off on me a little. laugh.gif Our royalty were cut off from the people. Except the Sultan of Selangor I think.

chatuchak market open on weekend only then how about pratunam market? oso weekend only or everyday?? im planning my trip now when ready can ask ur guys opinion

Chatuchak's a weekend market. Really should never, never miss Chatuchak. I've never been to Suan Lum night bazaar but it's worth a visit. Many people who had been there told me to go and the locals too but I couldn't fit it into my schedule. It seems that this night bazaar is gonna close anytime so if you can make it, don't miss it. Pratunam market is opened daily from 9am-midnight.

About the kickboxing, I've never been to one but according to my Lonely Planet, it says this(roughly):
The best of the best fight at the 2 Bangkok stadiums-Ratchadamnoen Stadium and Lumphini Stadium.

Ratchadamnoen Stadium
- more formal
- is the original one
bouts: 5-8pm & 8.30-midnight (Sun), 6.30-11.30pm (Mon, Wed, Thurs)
Bus: Air-con bus 503, ordinary 70

Lumphini Stadium(Sanam Muay Lumphini)
- has looser and more populist atmosphere compared to Ratchadamnoen
- more encouraging of non-Thai boxers
www.muaythailumpini.com
bouts: 6.30-11pm(Tues & Fri), 5-8pm & 8.30-11.30pm Sat
Metro: Lumphini

Admission fee
- same for both and vary according to seats
Ringside seats
- 2000Baht
- most expensive and filled with VIPs
- central action
- gambling prohibited
2nd class seats
- 1500Baht
- most tourists take these ones
- also filled with number-runners who take bets from the die-hard fans in 3rd class
3rd class
- 1000Baht
- die-hard fans
- they bet and cheer from the fenced-off bleachers (I think you better don't take these ones or you might get crushed)
- rowdiest section

Foreigners/Westerners usually pay more than the local Thais for the seats. I guess that's understandable. Most programs have 8-10 fights of 5 rounds each. English-speaking 'staff' outside the stadium, who's practically tackle you upon arrival, hand you the fight roster and steer you to the foreigners' ticket windows; they cal also be helpful telling you which fights are the best match-ups (some say welterweights between 61.2kg and 66.7kg are the best). Remember to only purchase tickets from the ticket window and not from a person outside the stadium(you don't need help to buy a ticket no matter what you're told). For more info on fighters and upcoming programs see www.muaythai2000.com (click the image then click the UK flag for English)

On maps and guidebook
I've got lots of maps of Bangkok and the best ones I find is the Nancy Chandler's Map of Bangkok alias "The Market Map and Much More" . Another quite good one is a free copy map of Bangkok(there are so many but this one is with a red main page and a big advertisement of Narry's Hotel in Phuket. It also has a map of Phuket and Pattaya). If you travel lots by BTS, then of course it makes sense to get a free BTS map at the station(for planning trips and all that). Nancy Chandler's map is not free but it's really good in the sense that it's clearly defined in different colors and small notes(of what that place has) and has a good floor plan of Chatuchak. It says also: "Detailed map of weekend market area, central shopping area, khao san/phra athit, sukhumvit road, Chinatown, Central Bangkok, Greater Bangkok, river, taxi stops, skytrain/subway routes AND tips on how to enjoy the charm of old Bangkok!!"

Getting a guidebook is not necessary with Nancy Chandler's map because it comes with a small booklet listing accommodations, sightseeing, shopping, dining, entertainment, transportation, etc. It's like whatever you need to know for your Bangkok trip, it's all in there. I bought my Bangkok Lonely Planet here coz I needed to know details and Lonely Planet's the best(but also expensive). I bought it coz I know I'll go back to Bangkok again. You can't buy Nancy Chandler map here in KL. You can buy it in any bookstore in Thailand, it's well-known.

It'll be great if you can visit Ayutthaya if you're in Bangkok. It's not far from Bangkok and it's very interesting to see all the ancient ruins of a great empire(World Heritage UNESCO site) and then eat at a riverside restaurant. Along the road you'll see people selling strings of colored(natural, pink, green, etc) thingy in plastic bags. Those are sweet strands of Idunnowhat that you put on a piece of popiah-like skin and rolled. Those sweet stuff's like the Chinese's dragon beard candy. I like it. It's Ayutthaya's specialty(the locals said).
I've uploaded some photos I took at Ayutthaya and you can see them here--> Link

If can, don't miss Suan Lum~ It's something like night bazaar but the things they sell is way better than our pasar malam. tongue.gif

You cannot take pictures inside the area where they worship. But don't worry, you will see the "No Camera" sign. And if you try to take out your camera in the "No Camera" area, they will ask you to put away before allowing you to go in.

Haha one more thing.. If you take pictures in the "No Camera" area and get caught, they will ask you to delete the pictures before letting you leave the place.

BAsically if you eat at a foodcourt , food hawker's centre, they have have got pictures of the food. Just point at the picture.

Unless u walk on the street,u see a hawker selling something like noodle stall u just point point point what u want. And if u want a coconut water drink - just point the partuclar coconut and show yr finger as to how many u want. Then use a simple english...how much? They understand perfectly well. Try to use the simplest sentences...dun bother to use the right tense, verb or find the right vocab cos u ended getting nothing as they dun understand a single thing.

If u go to normal or medium class restaurant to eat they have got menus in English or comes with picture...just point.

Sign language is universal...use it.

Simple English is good enough. Something like "Paad thai, two!" instead of "Can I have 2 plates of paad thai please?" Or like DrezzUp said, point if there's a picture. I also pointed many times when buying snack from roadside stalls. Sometimes not sure what meat/ingredient were those. I've met quite a number of Thais who speak Mandarin and Teochew too.
