Can, I have some opinion on Kasturi's CFA program?

I used to taken my CFP at Kasturi, and I love its centralised location with MRT and bus connection.

I also love the food around that area i.e., lots of choices.

Hi all, I'm relatively new to the financial industry and have come across the CFA qualification. I would like to ask what are the benefits of becoming a charterholder? I heard from a relative of mine that it will not increase your emolument and in her words "CFA is relatively useless".

+1 to your relative. Having a CFA to your namecard looks cool but won't carry much weight. Not the textbook knowledge, but it is the 4-year related experience that you accumulated is the more important and relevant.

Has been doh.gif many times hearing stories of newbies (passed CFA L2/L3 examination) using textbook materials to support their arguments or other things doh.gif

I even to come know my friend's friend who is a CFA Chartered and Chartered Accountant (ICAEW) with 8-year experience and he is now working as a senior manager in the equity research department of a famous overseas IB, and this fellow told me in an occasion that he does not invest any type of investments at all because he is afraid of risk...LOL laugh.gif

I attended Kasturi, but this was many yrs ago, when Kasturi was nearly a monopoly. As you mention, food & transport are great. I used to take LRT. L1 had around 100 students!! But many didn't even take the exam. By L3, class size was down to 12.

Ask about no. of students, lecturers' CV, if you can use library weekends & after office-hours, etc. David Meow was a good lecturer - not sure if he's still there.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm still trying to accommodate studies after work. Found a few colleagues of mine who are doing level 3 as well so maybe we could organise a study session after in the office.
Yeah I did take both level 1 & 2 at Sunway. We have relatively high passing rate as well. Tho I couldn't give you the exact percentage but we could definitely rival that of Noesis. The classes are pretty small, with a group of 10-20 and most are very engaging. Sunway provides a university environment and you can definitely have a good 'campus' feel here. With regards to the trainer, they are definitely willing to guide you provided that you take the initiative as they are busy with the careers as well.

But TBH, I think Noesis has a better admin support in terms of your preference of being helpful.

Hey guys, great thread. I too am considering CFA Level 1. And didn't expect Lowyat forum to be such a great source.

hey Aaron, did you also attempted ACCA in Sunway? I enquired their CFA course when they have just started and they mentioned to me majority of their students are Sunway ACCA graduate, is that right?
I heard CFA Sunway is run by a company namely AB Maximus which is not an approved prep provider (or at least I did not find their name at the CFA Institute website). I was kinda reluctant when I get to know about this because I have a friend who signed up their Level I program in the past, they ended up did not conduct any classes but managed to sell their products which is not very professional of them.

How was the lecturer? I heard there were many imported lecturers, but I heard its only for the 1st intake and they are now using locals. (Would be great if someone could clarify. I think lecturers are the main factors of choosing tuition centre).

I also saw Noesis has a new deal - RM3800 for weekday option students. I heard from the phone - 120+ hrs of face to face classes. Maybe I can consider if my boss doesnt force me to OT . everything else seems to be the same than Noesis's other package. (RM5,500 is probably for flexible schedule.)

Eat and drink for free. Can order desserts also if you want. Just don't upset your stomach for the afternoon session.

So far i checked CFA website, only two calculators allowed as follows:

•Texas Instruments BA II Plus (including BA II Plus Professional)
•Hewlett Packard 12C (including the HP 12C Platinum, 12C Platinum 25th anniversary edition, 12C 30th anniversary edition, and HP 12C Prestige)

Hello people,

I couple of years ago, when I took my CFP exam in U.M exam centre, I came across some candidates taking the GARP - F.R.M exam.

I am just curious about this? Who takes this exam and where is it offered?

Thanks.

UM? I did the FRM exam in 2008 at Sunway UC. The exam is for those involved in financial risk management, particularly market, credit, operational and investment risk. I self studied back then (due to inavailability of tuition providers in Sarawak). In Malaysia, I think only Kasturi is offering preparatory classes for the exam. For more info on the exam, google "GARP FRM"

Hey sorry late reply been busy w work lately. cry.gif

And yes I attempted both my L1&2 at Sunway. The corporate students are actually dominating classes now, so you will get a healthy mix of everyone. While I'm not sure if AB Maximus is approved tuition provider or not, they do pretty well in Singapore market, or so I heard.

The lecturers are still imported from Singapore like I've mentioned earlier but there're also a few local lecturers which are equally competent if not better.

1) Master in Finance then ACCA then CFA
2) ACCA then CFA

i would like to have both accounting and finance knowledge....may i know how long are MIF, ACCA and CFA takes? assume that i can pass all the papers. I will choose to study for full time in order to focus better.

- Master in Finance (1.5-2 years)
- ACCA (2.5 years, assuming no exemptions, but you may need to factor in the exemptions you can get with your degree)
- CFA (2-2.5 years, assuming you start studying for the Level 1 exam 6 months prior to it)

What if i got exemptions 9 papers from ACCA, still need to take so long to finish ACCA? i thought it is about 5-6 months to complete ACCA after my degree?
