Why should replace F-5 with FA-50?
I always thought MiG-29 is the replacement already for the F-5. Is there still need for TUDM to have light fighters since we can already afford some of the more advanced fighters in the world?
*
The migs were bought to replace the skyhawk, not f5
The hawks (not skyhawk) were first bought as advanced trainer but then rmaf saw its potential as a cheap light attack/fighter

then hawk also light fighter right?  laugh.gif

BAe Hawk 208 more of a light fighter/bomber aircraft, a duty it shares with FA-18. Unlike F-5 which is a pure air superiority fighter.

In TUDM air superiority fighter duties all passed to MiG-29 and Su-30 already. So a replacement for a light air superiority fighter is redundant.

the same as the US high low concepts

top end are the SU-30 Air to Air / F-18 Air to Ground

Hawk is the low end both for training and low intensity mission. Basically, buruh kasar of the air force

the MRCA intended fill in the middle of those two capable of air to air and air to ground. Not necessary to be very good at it. Same like how SU-30 is not limited to air to air nor is F-18 is limited to air to ground. They are only limited to their weapon choice. The Mig29 was used as interceptor most of the time

Hawk is still the buruh kasar laugh.gif

Probably also fighter with the lowest cost to operate in TUDM. biggrin.gif

Wonder why we never got more than 20 last time. AFAIK we only bought 18 Hawk 208 fighters & 4 Hawk 108 trainer planes , nowadays all probably only 13-14 left in service.

not only low cost, but mainly Hawk (like other traning jet) have higher Airframe/fuselage usage hours, Hawk have 20,000 hrs, than extend to 30,000 hours.
F18 still have design 6000 hours, than can extend to 8000, maximum should be around 10,000 hrs.
so Hawk as buruh kasar is very true,

They are a bargain to their bigger cousin. Losing one or two does not hit that much. Plus, there are plenty of good alternative in market if they need replacement like the YAK-130

Chinese coast guard to build new base near disputed islands

user posted image

The China Coast Guard (CCG) has discussed building a new large operating base at Wenzhou on China's northeast coast, according to a 13 June report in Japan's Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper.

Details of discussions between the CCG and the Zhejiang provincial government were reportedly posted on the latter's website but were removed after the Yomiuri report was published.

Wenzhou is 200 nautical miles (380 km) northeast of the disputed Senkaku/Daioyu islands. The islands, in the East China Sea, have been the location for repeated confrontations between Chinese and Japanese coastguard vessels going back to at least 2008.

The planned base is reported to include a 1,200 m jetty to support six or more vessels. In addition, facilities for operating and supporting both fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft will be built along with a large training establishment.

Significantly, the article stated that the base would have the capacity to support ships with displacements of up to 10,000 tonnes. The press reported in October 2014 that China has been building two coastguard cutters of this size and the first of these, pennant number 2901, was recently on sea trials.

Egypt to receive FREMM frigate on 23 June

user posted image

QUOTE
France will hand over the FREMM (Frégate Européenne Multi-Missions) frigate Normandie (D651) to the Egyptian Navy on 23 June at the company's shipyard in Lorient, Western France.

The ship will retain its pennant number, although despite reports suggesting it will be re-named Al-Cairo , its new name is still to be revealed.

The ceremony will take place in the presence of Rear Admiral Osama Rabie, Chief of Staff of the Egyptian Navy, and Admiral Bernard Rogel, Chief of Staff of the French Navy.

The 5,200-tonne ship was scheduled to be the French Navy's second Aquitaine-class frigate, with delivery to the Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR) on behalf of the French procurement directorate Direction Générale de l'Armement (DGA) originally planned for late 2014.

However the development of a government-to-government arrangement, that culminated in an agreement signed on 16 February 2015, saw the ship heading for Egypt instead.

The arrangement will see DCNS undertake outfitting work including translation of man-machine interfaces into Arabic, and the delivery of logistics support, spares, and maintenance services, as well as training activity alongside DCI-NAVFCO.

The ship will retain its original SYLVER A43 vertical launching system (VLS) (for Aster 15 missiles purchased by Egypt); the Sagem Vigy MM fire-control system; Thales' UMS 4110 CL and CAPTAS 4 sonar systems; the Nexter Systems NARWHAL 20B remote weapon stations; DCNS's Contralto-V anti-torpedo decoy launchers and Sagem's NGDS multiple decoy launchers; and launchers for MBDA Exocet MM 40 Block 3 anti-ship missiles and Eurotorp MU90 Impact lightweight torpedoes.

DCNS will, however, remove both its own SYLVER A70 VLS (that fires the MBDA Missile de Croisière Naval [MdCN] long-range land-attack cruise missile) and the Elettronica Radar-Electronic Counter Measures (R-ECM) system.

The frigate will sail for Egypt around 20 July, before taking part in Egypt's new Suez Canal inauguration ceremony on 6 August.
