Being a PR only benefits your children more. Like me, I'm WAS 2nd generation PR there. I enjoy the same school fee in govt sch like any other Singaporeans, which is like SGD14 per mth. Compared to overseas student paying SGD100 plus each mth.

BUT, in the end, for guys you have to make a decision whether to serve NS. After serving your NS, you are given a choice to take their citizenship or to remain as PR. But bear in mind, being a PR do not give you any benefit like the shares and bonus given out. And also you have to have a job to maintain your PR. By accepting the citizenship, you have to give up your Msian citizenship, and your childen will have to be Sporean and go thru NS. By not wanting to go thru NS, you have to give up your PR

All of my friends will agree that serving NS is a waste of time, they rather go into Uni and get a degree. Those are my Singapore friends (I do not have any friends in Msia at all).

However by not wanting to thru NS, you have to give up your PR status and somehow get blacklisted or marked by Ministry of Defence.

So you see, either way you have to lose something. Staying in Singapore is great, as that is where my family and friends are, and I feel more at home, not that I dislike Msia or anything, and I am not afraid to say that I can't even sing Msia's national anthem nor speak BM, cos where you grow up and spend your best time will always be the place in your heart, but sometimes, things may not turn out to be what you want and you just have to live with it.

So to all those who wants to work and settle in Singapore, you really have to think of your future. For those who just want to work and earn some $$ there, by all means if you think you can save more there.

Hi tkhoo, I don't think I'm in the right position to answer all your question. But 4K is enough for you to survive. Its consider as middle-income family.
PR is subjected, as the policy changes everynow and then. The school fees for govt primary school is cheap. Like I said you will be paying the local rates. I do not know how much it is now. But its definately not a problem.

I think if you require more information, you should write in to the immigration dept, they will be able to provide you all the answers.

Well i'm 16. Live in Skudai JB. Think of looking for part time job after i finish my SPM next year. Any job recommendation? Btw, what is the price of suzuki hayabusa in SG? In malaysia it cost more than RM 80K++. if it cheaper might consider study very hard and get job there instead(no part-time coz can't afford superbike if work as toilet cleaner). By the way, is there any work in singapore that involve with automobile engineering, because i'm an engineer students. What is the starting salary for fresh graduate in automotive industry. I like to be engineer that enhance the vehicle performance.

If you get some executive post -it's almost guaranteed that you'll earn at least S$2.5k. It's part of the requirements for the MOM to issue you an Employment Pass and Employment Pass applications (by S'porean employers) have much higher chances of getting approved than the lower-tier S-pass or Working Pass. So the more highly sought-after you are, the more you will get paid by your S'pore employer to ensure your acceptance by the MOM. Even for the Employment Pass, there are several grades (eg. P1, P2, Q1, Q2, etc.) according to how much you are to be paid. You can browse the MOM site for more details as to the duration of validity and application requirements of the various work visas/passes: www.mom.gov.sg

You should start looking for places to stay about a couple of weeks before you're expected to have your working visa approved (Employment Passes can take up to 1 month for approval; not sure about the other working visas). Try www.adpost.com/sg. This is so you can have time to survey which places are best for you. Your life can be hell if stuck with the wrong housemates or landlords. Avoid landlords who have no experience renting out rooms or have bad things to say about their previous tenants. Talk to them to try and gauge their nature -the realty agents can only say good things about the landlords they are trying to match-make with you (they will ask for 0.5 month's rental from you as commission, BTW).

I think there are NINE (9) officially gazetted red-light districts in S'pore. Geylang is the more well-known one. Can't remember them all.

if the salary offered is $1400-1500, should the job be taken up? still need to rent a room, pay expenses ( food, transport ), tax and all. do you think money could be saved after deducting all these?

You get free wireless internet upto 512kbps in Singapore as part of the government's Wireless@SG initiative.YES FREE!

Overview

Wireless@SG is a wireless broadband programme developed by IDA as part of its Next Generation National Infocomm Infrastructure initiative. It will be run and developed in the next two years by three local wireless operators who will deploy a wireless broadband network in Singapore. Users can enjoy free, both in-door and outdoor seamless wireless broadband access with speeds of up to 512kbps at most public areas.

The targeted users of this wireless broadband network are broadly classified as "people on the move" - people who require wireless broadband access while away from their homes, schools and offices. These include students, tourists, business travellers and enterprise users such as insurance agents and real estate agents who use widely-available and wireless-enabled devices such as notebook PCs and PDAs. Once connected, users will be able to access all Internet-based services e.g. online gaming, web surfing, instant messaging, VoIP and email.

http://www.ida.gov.sg/Programmes/200610271...?getPagetype=36
You have 3 isps to choose from to register:
iCell, QMax and SingTel
With that you've already save on broadband every month.

The only 2 things you need to worry much about are the room rentals and eating out. When it comes to facilities, Singapore is just next to Japan in Asia.

Singapore is also embarking on a national broadband network which will deliver at least 100mbps initially to all its people and eventually symmetrical 1gbps when it is fully up.

Next Generation National Broadband Network (Next Gen NBN)

Singapore's Next Generation National Infocomm Infrastructure comprises the ultra high-speed Next Generation NBN and the pervasive Wireless Broadband Network (WBN). The Next Gen NBN will entrench Singapore's Infocomm hub status and open doors to new economic opportunities, business growth and social vibrancy for the country. Next Gen NBN will be capable of ultra high speeds of symmetric 1 Gbps or more, with initial provisioning of 100 Mbps.

The greatest difference between SG and MY are cars and trains. Seriously if you like driving, you'll hate SG. On the other hand if you hate driving it's not too bad. Plus you save on petrol and car payments, etc. The downside of course is that your mobility is kinda restricted to MRT / cab / foot.

SG's also pretty safe to walk around at night (in the city, Orchard and quayside area. I wouldn't know about Geylang ;p).

(the salsa scene is not bad either!)

Yes, this is quite a valid concern. Most M'sian low-income earners (read: blue-collar workers) prefer to work in S'pore but live in JB for this reason.

You can probably live with just S$500 or even less per month in S'pore but you'll have to be very frugal and life would be quite miserable -like a uni student but without the uni subsidies and student-discounts... I'd say to live comfortably, and to afford the occasional gadget, it's more like S$800+ per month for living expenses.

BTW, the island-wide free internet thingy is expected to be fully operational only be the end of next year. Right now it's just major shopping malls and near gov't offices and the city centre.
