It's 4oclock and I too lazy to come out with my own build, so I borrowed and modded from Minecrafer's build here.

Intel Xeon E3-1231 V3 3.4GHz RM954
Asrock H97 Pro4 RM330
Gainward Phantom GTX970 RM1325
Corsair Value RAM 8GB DDR3 1600MHz RM229
WD Caviar Blue 1TB RM199
Seasonic M12II Evo 520W 80+ Bronze Fully Modular RM299
Budget case RM200
Samsung S22C170BS RM402.80
Logitech Wired K120 Keyboard RM29
Total: RM4k+/-

If you seriously want to squeeze in a SSD in the same budget, get non-phantom GTX970 (save RM50), find sub RM100 OEM case, get H97m/H87 (save another RM20-50) and try nego with the shop.

No, you can't install Haswell (or soon Broadwell) CPU on H6X mobo. Also old mobo may not have PCIE3.0, may bottleneck the GPU performance by little or more.

RAM may be reusable if it is single stick 4GB, preferably at least 1333Mhz speed for better compatibility with current RAM of speed 1600Mhz and above. You can skip the RAM first and see how the old 4GB work on your new rig first before deciding on how many more RAM to buy.

Casing is generally reusable as long as the size is acceptable but modern casing tend to have better design for mounting bigger size fan (12cm and above).

Check my suggestion above, the original build by Minecrafer is a 5k+ build. You just need to swap out the monitor for a decent 23/24" and you are good to go.

But personally, I will suggest you to get a GTX970 instead of GTX980 for the time being as next gen GPU by AMD is around the corner (hence GTX980 will get dethroned by 390x and 980TI), for sure to anticipate some price change on GTX980 soon after that. You can get a GTX970 and speculate on how the things go first before pulling the trigger for a GPU cost over RM2.3k. GTX970 cost starting RM1.3k to RM1.7k, the cheapest one will do since you just test water first.

Hi guise, so my 7950 boost decided to die suddenly (vertical red lines, checkerboard during POST etc).

Usage:
- 1080p gaming, decidedly less game time now (woes of a working unker/adult)
- single monitor
- using a haswell i5 @ 4Ghz, with SSD and 8GB RAM.

So, What should i aim for ? :

- 2nd hand 7950 ? (cheapest but doubts on quality, esp those from bitcoin miners)
- gtx 960 ? 4gb ? (middle ground, as fast if not faster than 7950/280 and a lot quieter/less heat)
- R 290 tri x ? GTX 970 ? (most expensive choice, but supposedly longer lasting...)
- just suck it up and use integrated grpahics (intel HD) until computex in june (R 3xx/cheaper pricing on current models)

If can afford then GTX970, can't afford then 2nd hand 290 is great, many around for under RM700.

If 2k without monitor still probably can play at mid settings in some games, 2k with monitor will have to settle with low settings mostly.

Depends on what is actually limiting you, if you want to play on higher settings but the frame rate is not satisfying you currently with your GTX660, then I will recommend you to go for it, GTX960 is roughly 33% more powerful than GTX660, but if you have extra budget, spend another few hundred bucks for a GTX970 will give you more significant performance boost.

Im considering gtx970 but x51 1st generation psu cant support it. Need further modification. Maybe need to do more research on psu for my little rig.
