Can but if you aren't satisfied with the output you can get a cheap Nvidia/AMD card for better compression/decompression.

Correction to earlier build due to wrong mobo selected.

Intel Pentium G3240 - RM 199
Asrock B85M-ITX - RM 329
Kingston 4GB DDR3 1600MHz Value RAM - RM 109
WD Blue 1TB HDD - RM 189
Antec VP400 - RM 119
CM Elite 110 - RM 159

Total: RM 1104 (Viewnet price inclusive of GST)

mITX build is small but the mobo is quite expensive, if you can accept mATX which is slightly bigger than mITX then the total cost will be below 1k.

What's your RAM model? Need to know to ensure no compability issue with new RAM.

Kingston 4GB DDR3 1600MHz Value RAM - RM 109
Zotac GTX970 4GB GDDR5 Reference - RM 1271 (Can be switched to non reference card if you wish to do so since you have budget left)

Are you going to reuse your current case, HDD/SSD?

Hey guys,

Glad that i stumbled into this thread. Tons of useful information especially from terence_nwb

I am planning to build a storage rig where it's main function is to store data and other devices would access data from it. There would only be 1 or 2 users who would access this storage.

I would like to have a motherboard with at least 6 sata ports , but ideally it would be 8 sata ports. The rest doesn't matter, as I wish for it to be as low powered as possible since it would only be handling a single task. RAID is not necessary.

My budget would be below RM1000, of course, the lower would be better.

Summary:

Budget: Below RM1000
Purpose: File Storage
Requirements: Motherboard with 8 Sata ports , cheap casing that can accomodate 8 Hdds.
Comments: Harddisk is not necessary, as I already have them, no need for Keyboard, mouse, monitor.

Thank you

Intel Celeron G1840 - RM 139
Asrock H97 Pro4 (six SATA 3 ports) - RM 389
Kingston 4GB DDR3 1600MHz Value RAM - RM 109
Antec VP400 - RM 119
CM N300 (up to eight 3.5" drive bays) - RM 189

Total: RM 945 (Viewnet price inclusive of GST)

If you can find Asrock Fatal1ty H87 Performance, the total cost will be much lower, this mobo is discontinued but the leftover costs only RM 264 (Viewnet price, not sure if still got stock).

If you want eight SATA 3 ports, the cheapest that I found is MSI Z87 MPOWER SP - RM 479.

If you want hot swappable drive bay, you will need to spend more sweat.gif

If you want to max out the 1k budget, I would go for

Dell U2414H 60Hz 8ms IPS - RM 949

OR if you want high frame rate monitor

AOC G2460PQU 144Hz 1ms TN - RM 969

HDD: Intel SSD X25-M 120gb + WD caviar black 1TB
PSU: Cosair TX650M (was using something else before upgrading the ram & GC)
ODD: Blu-ray RW multidrive (2 unit)
OS: windows 8.1

[Budget] RM2k+/-

[Purpose] Mainly 3D video editing (captured from Sony TD 10 handycam) & web surfing & light gaming
