I still dont want to go 100% full SSD. (Solution below -Please give feedback)
I killed 2 pendrive of mine. Data corrupt suddenly, its just tragic.

So confirmed my requirements:
Below 5K
Low Profile (Not eye catching)
15" to 17" Full HD (Preferably IPS)
i7-4720HQ (At least 2.4GHz, quad core)
8GB DDR3L RAM at least (Future upgradable to 16GB Dual Channel DDR3)
Storage? 500GB enough. HDD/SSD? No, Solid State Hybrid Drive <-Solution
Graphic card? Make sure no lags in movie and some small games will do.
Optical disc drive is a must!
Cooling and support service is very important.

The answer I got: Illegear Q5... so far.
Any more laptop to add in for comparison?

Feel free to correct any mistakes. smile.gif

I recommend Z5 since it has better cooling. But if you really need low profile then no choice.
I don't recommend SSHD cause it is a slow 5400rpm HDD with 8gb cache. Besides loading your OS, other stuff will have a slow read/write speed. You will notice the different very soon. Besides if you really manage to get a SSD in the future, the SSHD will just be a pathetic 5400rpm HDD. I recommend getting 7200rpm HDD in case in the future you add in SSD.
I think getting a SSD now is okay. SSD is NOT like pendrive which have more wear and tear issue. SSD can survive for quite long so there is no need to worry about it. If there is anything, you can always claim for warranty.
1TB HDD + 128GB SSD is the sweet spot for you.

Looks fine to me. You can use the remaining budget to get extra warranty or increase your RAM capacity. nod.gif

If you choose Q5. It fits well enough.

EDIT : It seems you still doubt SSD quality compared to Pendrive. Hopefully, you'll change your mind sooner or later.

So far any laptop with single fan and heatsink and it has considerate good GPU and CPU will heat up to uncomfortable level.

I'm using HP ENVY TS 15. Beats is usually on the Bass side, if you like it. It is good. thumbup.gif

Yup, heat is an issue because of the thin profile of my model. But with some tweaking it is under control. rclxms.gif

Z5 cooling got difference with Q5? Looks same.

Do you think 8GB of ram would be enough? Or should upgrade to 16GB?

How good the cooling of a laptop is determined by how well its internal thermal management is, not just how many heatpipe and fan it has.

According to ILLEGEAR, Z5 with gtx970m vs S5 with gtx970m in furmark benchmark, Z5 manage to get better temperature. S5 is using triple heatsink + fan. Z5 is currently the best laptop in term of cooling (exclude high end model). At least up until now.
Q5 cooling is still unknown cause there is no benchmark or user review yet.

Well for normal user 1TB may be a lot of space, but it is for long run usage. You will save pictures, files etc etc so it is better to have 1TB. Not to mention software nowadays also required some amount of storage. Well if you're not a hardcore user, 500gb is sufficient then. But take note high demanding games required a lot of storage space, Eg: COD AW is about 40gb and GTA V is about 60gb

To be honest, I will go for Z5 for better upgrade option. At least for storage wise. Z5 have 2 mSata SSD slot but Q5 only has 1 m2 SSD slot.

m2 SSD got 2 types. PCIE interface and SATA 3 interface. PCIE m2 SSD will be much more expensive but it is faster in term of read/write speed. SATA 3 is the most convention interface so it will be much cheaper but slower.
m2 SSD doesn't come cheap. It is the most expensive type compared to 2.5'' and mSata.
256gb of m2 SATA3 SSD cost about RM700+, excluding GST. So be prepared if you want to take Q5 and want to have HDD + SSD combo.

Edit: For RAM, if you want to have dual channel, it is better you check your RAM brand and type and purchase a similar one. Cause sometimes the RAM will not be compatible even thou it is the same type. 8GB is actually sufficient if you didn't do anything intense

Miong93 has explain the M.2 SSD to you.

So about RAM. When you get your laptop. Use it like you normally would then open up task manger to check your RAM if it still has reasonable space left. If it still has enough space, you are fine, don't need to increase but if you have the $$ to do so. Go ahead.

Z5 960M cooling is better than Q5 because of heatpipe interbridge.

there is no point of trying to convince you is you have the mindset.
SSD is a relatively old technology which is widely used and accepted to be superior (look at how long have the Apple Macs been using them). it was even shown to last longer than HDDs in recent research.
it is up to you ultimately but I for one would not ever buy a laptop without a SSD as it is the single best performance boost for your machine at the moment (considering the healthy budget that you have).

Hi, anyone can help me figure out laptop for my mom. For work and surfing. Work as in microsoft office etc, not those 3d editing or whatnot.

I don't have a preferred brand, but looking at Dell since good CS, so it wouldnt be much of a hassle for her to repair/claim warranty.

Budget < 3k.

Currently looking at Vostro and Inspiron 7000 series, any other recommendations?
