there is a difference when calling something bad vs comparing it with something which is much bigger, much heavier of a different class (comparing apple with oranges).
once again, it said nothing about XPS13-2015 being a badly built model and also how it is inferior to other machines.
how someone abuse their product != build quality of the product. how you think there is a correlation there is beyond me.
I mentioned Linus as one of the reputable person (any PC enthusiast would know him for his work over the years) who actually test it out to be good.

asking one not to consider/ buy a brilliant product just because of human abuse is plain  doh.gif
might as well ask everyone to get a Thinkpad X1 Carbon as it survive a drop test from the ceiling (if you dunno this, google it).

---

since you mentioned I am not selling a product, I am as neutral as possible here without any bias as I am stand to gain/ lose nothing from my comments.

would even not consider this.
gt 750m is too far behind from the gtx 960m offered in the MSI and Illegear.
it would be silly to spend that much for such an inferior spec as the XPS15 is at one of the most awkward spot (not as mobile as XPS13 and not as powerful as other performance laptops despite its weight/size)

So, no Dell anymore?

I dont really game these days, is it ok if I use gaming laptop to get my job done?
Would it be overkill?

Choices left are now MSI and Illegear only? hmm.gif

All right. Seems you have already have some in your mind. Computer slow because of HDD or RAM.

If you have the budget to do so. Swap the HDD to SSD, you'll never go back to HDD (This i can promise  tongue.gif ). RAM (for me at least) minimum 8Gb well with the way your using your laptop might as well go for the maximum allowed by the laptop.

For me i would consider MSI GE62 and Illegear. As the older model GE60 doesn't really have a good cooling system.

Now again happy hunting my friend.  thumbup.gif

Hmm, if you say computer slow mostly because of HDD or RAM,

I worry SSD lifetime only, it might died after some time right? Like my pendrive.
RAM definitely need at least 8GB already.

What about CPU? i7/i5? quad core/dual core? 2.4 above? unsure.gif

Seems like gaming type laptop is only in this range.

its seems asus n series not much in the market in these 2 months.
MSI is a little bit pricey for you.

i suggest get illegear z5, comes with Two Onkyo Speakers, just like B&O, Beats, DynaAudio (MSI)

for overheat in MSi, Lenovo and Acer.. acer yes, the nitro series. as following the threads, some user feel uneasy with the heat issue. but not overheat that until it shut down. MSI, so far only happen to GE60/70 series. others doing very well. Lenovo, i dont know so much. i like their keyboard, but not their design. overheat issue also influence by poor design of the notebook.

dont worry, it does not overkill. but it would be wasted for the graphic card if its not being fully utilised.. sweat.gif it just like a powerful beast that keep in the cage...

SSD is just like a pendrive, it does not die easily and depends how u take care of them. cz it does not have any disk inside that easily damage like HDD.

i5 only dual core. Mostly i7 is quad core(some end with HQ, MQ, HM, etc.) except Ultra Low voltage (ULV) processor (i7-5500U) which have dual core. Among these series, ultra processor is suitable for moderate use but not much intense gaming cz it will bottleneck the cpu. since the ultra processor have 2 core, and 4 threads compare the other i7 have 4 core, 8 threads. too summarized..

the ultra proc:
~Has fewer CPU cores,
~Does not support as many threads,
~Runs at lower frequency

and laptop runs longer on battery compare others i7 series.

feel free to ask if want to know more nod.gif laugh.gif

SSD is the way to go.
and if you are worried about the lifespan, the lifespan endurance test just ended recently (http://techreport.com/review/27909/the-ssd-endurance-experiment-theyre-all-dead)
so don't worry, SSD do last freaking damn long thumbup.gif

ps: http://techreport.com/review/27062/the-ssd...ain-after-1-5pb and many more by just googling "ssd endurance test"

Yes and no about pen drive. The quality of pen drive and SSD is different as SSD will last longer. There have been a recent endurance test done. It will be more than sufficient provided you take good care of your laptop.

I might be wrong but if you are not gaming ir rendering stuff. Normal U processor is sufficient though compiling code might be longer. That said yes it is nothing wrong having a gaming laptop to do your work but you never know when you're gonna game again. tongue.gif

Sure but you are limited by your budget. There is some 15.6 inch if you dont mind.

I think what evo mentions is you should rephrase your sentence/words. It is quite misleading for others. People will sub-consciously think it is bad.. because it is bad (in fact it is not bad)
At least explain why you said so with your experience so people can judge.

Most of the time people tend to say it is slow because the program open very slowly. So in this case, SSD is the way to go. If your work is not so intense like 3D rendering, video encoding, heavy VM etc. maybe a normal i5 or i7 U series is sufficient. Eg: Office work hardly will benefits from the multi cores of the processor.
SSD will significantly improves your read/write speed, so you should consider it. The lifespan is good enough to last you a few years. (Except you're going to read/write 100tb of file everyday then it may be a different story)
For GPU, since you're don't gaming, you may consider to omit this. But if you're doing design work, the CUDA core may be essential.

Hey MP9090,

Heat is an issue mainly cause it limits the performance of the CPU & GPU. Processing power generates heat so heat sinks + fans are used to cool things down and give more headroom for more processing performance. Kinda why overclockers use liquid nitrogen when competing to reach faster and faster clock speeds.

If a notebook shuts down then it's not just poor performance but bad design and poor cooling. Some brands manage this by throttling their own cards so processing speed never gets too high to crazy temperatures while others add more heat pipes and go with dual fans.

With a max budget of 4.5k, you can consider the MSI GE60 2QE & GE70 2QE Apache Pro with latest Nvidia 960M GPU.
http://www.msi.com/product/nb/GE60-2QE-Apa...l#hero-overview
http://www.msi.com/product/nb/GE70-2QE-Apa...l#hero-overview

Previous generations had heat issue and couldn't sustain nominal clock speed for long but gaming performance wise it's comparable to other brands. And current GE60/70 Apache models have improved on cooling from the old ones.

Other things to note include the 1TB 7200RPM HDD + 15'6"FHD IPS screen on the MSI GE60 2QE Apache Pro

Shop around and see what some of the MSI dealers offer. Sometimes got free game and stuff.

Assuming your usage is for gaming (because of gaming specs.).

If you are the type that requires the settings to be as high as possible then the Lenovo would suit you as it has the better GPU. While the Dell and Asus GPU isnt as good as the Lenovos but are able to game perfectly fine with reduce setting.

Cooling wise would be Dell and Lenovo.

After sale services is definitely Dell.

Happy hunting. biggrin.gif

Feel free to ask any questions.

EDIT : Screen wise lenovos isnt that good. Has a lot of complaint.
