Has anyone here ever completed a fishless cycle for tanks? If yes, where did you get your ammonia? If not, which method did you use?

They like to attack slow growing plants making it grow even slower! Darn! Hmm.. I used fan before, but can't keep up with the water top up. Haha! Shrimps from any sungai is Malaya shrimp eh?

Hmm.. Both T5 and led? What plant do you grow?
I got a few of cherry and malaya shrimp. Pretty sure about the cherry, but not very sure about malaya shrimp cause doesn't look like the ones i google-d. Do you have malaya shrimp? Any pictures of them small? Cause my ones are quite small, but berried. Did I got conned? Haha!
*
malaya shrimp looks something like this
user posted image

the identification is the stripe on their back. and also, if berried, their eggs are much much smaller than your cherry's eggs. and it could amount in the hundreds too. and malaya eggs hatches into larvae, not into mini shrimp so dont you see salah and angkut out all those innocent larvae out later tongue.gif

warning, if u have fishes, they will eat those larvae

But I've read somewhere that there's 2 types of Malaya shrimp. Those ones like yours, color shrimp and these little ones. Not sure which is better at clearning algae though. Hmm.. What do you think?
*

Yeah, thought so too. Haha! Hmm.. Stripe? I don't think so.. Probably these are smaller versions? Maybe need to wait a few weeks before they matures.. I don't know. Haha! They do look small though. Almost like cherry, or even smaller. Lol

But at least I think they're eating the algae. Hmm.. Do ghost shrimp eat algae?
*
they do eat algae but not as much as you think.

and malaya shrimp is way bigger than cherry, like twice big hahaha

Conned. Sad. bangwall.gif
No they don't. Why do you keep ghost shrimps other than as a feeder anyway? tongue.gif
Anyway, I don't think my shrimps are ghost shrimps. Probably more to 'udang sungai'.. Haha!

Those rainbow/ malaya shrimps are quite expensive eh? Saw someone selling here. Hmm.. Are they easily bred?
*
not really. i bought mine around 5 per pcs

Oh, no wonder its nicer. Mine is around 80 cents per shrimp. Haha! Hmm.. I've read that color/ rainbow shrimps eat shrimplets. Is it true?

Anyway, I manage to manually remove all the hair algae from the java ferns smile.gif
Here's my tank without hair algae.. Else, so ugly with black clouds of bba. Had to use dark photo effect to lower glare.

erm, i dont think they eat shrimplest, unless they super hungry or nothing to eat. but their size compared to cherry does mean they stronger. and when giving out pellets, they usually want it all for themselves, so need to throw extra pellets for the smaller shrimps lol

QUOTE(artsyfarty @ Mar 22 2017, 10:04 AM)
I have a 2ft with many cherry shrimps and tetras. I used Excel to spot treat BBA in 1:1 with water which grow on my anubias leaves and some of my stones. Did it once and it's all clear. Just make sure shrimp isn't around the proximity and watch for moss, they will go brown. After that do a WC. Switch off filter before that too.

For hair algae, a blackout routine will work like a charm if you want to clear it entirely.
*
does your tetras bite your cherry? or go kacau them?

my tank getting boring d haha. want to throw some tetras or guppy liao. how about the waste from tetras? alot? and your wc schedule?

I tried excel spot treatment before, usually during water change. I lowered the level until the affected area is near the water surface, and squirt some excel on that area. Can't really see whether shrimps are there or not but will probably be cause most of the algae are on the java ferns, which is the shrimp's hiding places. Then I can see that the algae turned red after filling up water but, its still there nonetheless. After a few days, just more algae will grow around the dead algae which forms a big black cloud. Haha!

I can't really do blackout method.. Most of my plants will melt on sudden environmental change.

That's why I'm more in to prevention then cure. What do I change for the algae to stop growing. Would changing lights work?
*
try reduce light period? how long u on your light?

Good question, i bought a power consumption measurement plug to test it. BUTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT, my son took the manual away from me and i couldnt find it till now. In short i havent really test yet.

So far my electric bill still ok, maybe rm20-30 difference per month.

If budget allows, and your tank is 2feet or more i suggest to take compressor chiller. It will be more economic power wise, and better resale value too.
*
compressor chiller?

i assume that thing would be noisy eh? hahaha

No la, not noisy like the home AC outdoor unit. It's like a mini fridge in hotel room.

My peltier chiller quite noisy when it runs, noise level is the same when u use ur pc to do power processing stuff (full speed pc fan)

Hi guys,

I'm new to this. Here's my tank with hardscape in place and a lone anubias from my old tank. I'm thinking abt setting up a low light/low tech tank. Any ideas of the plants I should stock. Anyone successfully achieve a carpet without co2?
And I got these weird rocks from a local fish shop. I worry the red coloration in the rocks could leach nasty metal like copper. What could these rocks be? They seem to look like crystals. Any ideas?[attachmentid=8666267]

Noted.

I will remove its when I can spot them. Or kill its in the tank (is it ok to kill it?, ammonia spike or other negative effect?)
*
kill in tank is ok, but i still prefer to take them out just in case lol

QUOTE(mujinkun @ Apr 20 2017, 12:27 PM)
BTW, after upgrade my 10G tank to 22G tank early this month, on last Saturday I tried to add 7 Amano/ Yamato Shrimp,
start from Monday, 1 by 1 of the shrimp die,
Parameter measure yesterday before water change:
Ammonia 0ppm
Nitrite 0ppm
Nitrate 40ppm

Temp : 27~28degC <<< Cool by fan

Actually what the cause of the shrimp die?
I can observed that sometime, the Ammonia will go to 0.25ppm (yellow with slightly green colour) <<< API test kit.

I do love to keep Yamato shrimp to combat my brush algae on the Java fern.
But not succesfull yet at the moment.

Sidenotes: I do add flourish excel without any co2 injection. With very low LED Lighting.

Please advise.
*
yamato shrimp is one of the toughest shrimp. but dont depend on them to solve your algae problem. unless you have a squadron of them. i'm no pro in water measure, but is your shrimp active during those days?

Shrimp that introduced into my tank on the first day hide in the Bacopa Monierri.

After that, its become haywire, always swimming in the tank like no tomorrow. After that 1 by 1 die.

And now, no more Shrimp. Only Zebrafish, Tetra and Honey Gourami.

Still confuse a lot, since its quite hardy shrimp compare to RCS, but maybe I acclimate them too fast?

Just with 1hour float the plastic bag without slow dripping the tank water.
*
hahaha

i know liao

could be yhour gourami keep kacau them, especially if your tank is small. by small my definition is 10G, but yours is 22, so i'm not quite sure about that.

if they stress too much, they could die from it.

but thats just my personal opinion la. cant 100% confirm that it is your gourami.

the only 100% fish that is compatible with shrimp is ottos biggrin.gif
