Preferably less than rm 500

erm, my current tank is just slightly bigger than yours, 1ft x 1.5ft x 1.5ft (rough estimate). excluding tank cost, i showered around rm480 for setup alone ie light, soil, air pump etc. lighting alone costed me RM180. and i have yet to include plants and shrimps.

perhaps my place here is a bit tad more expensive since the shrimp hobby here are still new.

just giving you a rough estimate of what are the cost gonna be.

so lets get to the basic, if you want a planted tank with shrimp, most important thing is the soil. i'm using ADA amazonia. there's others brand too out there but my place only have this. then comes the bacterial powder and water purify addictive. then you have to cycle the tank for about a month depending on your set up.

i suggest you go read up about setting up a shrimp tank from various sources. i read up for almost two months before getting started lol.

the key here is patience

and after that, i suggest you find a local shop which specialize in shrimp keeping and ask them about setting up a tank for you and you observing them how its done on the spot. you'll learn from there too.

well, thats just for setting up the tank. then comes the water parameters for the shrimp lol. not to mention the insects / worms that can come from it laugh.gif

here's a good read : https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/2979543

Thanks.

I would like to start with the substrate first
What do you recommend for the soil and bacteria?
What type of filter should i get?
*
depends on one's preferences. amazonia are known for their high ammonia (they are designed for planted tank after all) which is bad for shrimp. but thats only during the early stages of cycle, and hence it takes longer to cycle with amazonia as substrate for a shrimp tank. bacteria part you better consult with the shop you're gonna get your tank set up with. they know better.

filter just use those sponge type filter that works with air pump. 1ft tank i dont think require water pump.

what shrimp is this? I think it came with the Riccia i found in a small stream. It was smaller than the Cherry when I first saw it in my tank 3 months ago. Now it is about 2-3 inches.

Worst thing is my moss getting lesser and lesser. Shall I throw it away?
*
macam crayfish lol

you might wanna get it out of your tank if you have smaller shrimp in there

could be the light is too near the leaf that it kinda "burn" the leaf? i know that sometimes the leaf are vulnerable to the sun if put out on hot afternoon

and also, calm water

Is a good choice, nice and small, perfect for my mini tank, but the problem is they dont school.
My dream of thank is to have green carpeting and watch my fish school around.
Tetra or cardinal seem to be the best choice but i kinda felt they are too big. But at least there are hardy and easy to keep.
*
i think they stop schooling after they determined that they are pretty comfortable with the tank and got too relaxed and wandered off

i've seen better schooling results in a community tanks where there are other schooling fishes around. so maybe security might made them to stop schooling as much?

just my thinking.

Me too, I did blackout one, and it worked for a week, then it comes back again. But I only did one cycle, usually requires 2-3 or more cycles to clear it depend on the severity.

UV is one of the way to remove it.
*
UV light not cheap le

blackout? then the plants inside there how?

i also got shrimp inside laugh.gif

They will do just fine without light for a few days, no co2 and no nutrient. Usually WC, 3 days black out, WC, 3 days light, and repeat 2-3 times. It's quite effective to remove algae. Algae takes light to grow, without it, it will starve to death.
*
even those already stick hard to the glass will gone?

Can't be removed with brush?

Before blackout, you need to remove as much algae as you can. Trim leaves with algae, brush glass and tube. Then black out for 3 days, pitch black, you can feed if you want but not sure if they can see it. After 3 days, do a 50% WC, light on, crank up co2 and dose nutrient. Repeat.
*
hehe, even brush also need brush hard

i just scrap it off with old credit card. even better than brush, but need press hard.

dayum, i guess i'll just continue to scrap the algae on weekly basis. i scare my shrimp die later lol

with shrimp, it's a bit risky. Sensitive creatures.

How big is your tank? If it's small, use those small hose attach to the card/toothbrush with rubber band, so it sucks out the algae when your scrap it, otherwise they will stick back. Do a WC afterward.

Then do 30% WC daily/alternate day to remove algae zoospores (which will turn into algae).

shrimp wont die if you do blackout. they have nothing to do with lighting.. lol
just make sure your filter is running
*
lighting still ok, i scare the constant WC will be the killer lol

they are sensitive. need stable water parameter

guys, how do you trim your stem plant?

i cut in the middle of the plant, as it will grow back. but the thing is, it will grow another branch near the cut i made, making it look weird and not systematic laugh.gif
