owh...its interesting?
How do it sound like?hehe
*
the sound...erm...without plug in an amp, u not really can heard d sound unless u r in the area within 1 m.(mine is solid body)
after plug in, it just like normal ukulele sound but u can play more with the tone, n if u wan u can buy d effect pedal i think (i never tried it)!haha
for normal player i think,a good acoustic is more than enuf, electrical uke will add an advantage if u wan to play on stage o performance and silent practice in night!he

I doubt Mahalo comes any close to any of the big Ks. Ply-wood vs koa?
Whoever thinks Mahalo sounds great should stick to it. And never ever pick an 'expensive' ukulele, it'll spoil your love for Mahalo.

depends on the skill of the player.. give a kamaka to a bad player then it sounds bad.. give a mahalo to jake shimabukuro-wannabe then can sound good icon_idea.gif

Hey, just bought a Mahalo U320G less than a week ago, first time having an instrument too. sweat.gif Stupid question to ask but, what is the proper way of strumming? Sometimes i hit the side of my G string and it produces a louder sound than the other strings,i also sometimes hear buzzing sounds when playing C chord or F chord,is it because i am not pressing hard enough? Because my fingers start to hurt after awhile :S

Your G sounds louder probably its because the way you angle your fingers. Its either too deep or too sharply angled. Try a wider angle, think of your fingers floating through the strings. Buzzing is normally caused by improper grip. It may be because its not pressed hard, or maybe your other fingers intruding in.

If you're really into Ukulele, I really suggest you go to a nearby uke shop to try other ukes out after you're familiar with how your current one sounds. Ukulele Malaya have a wide selection =D Gotten a few from there. These instruments makes excellent gifts.

Nah. Bought as gifts. Can sama-sama jam together lol. I now only own a Kala 15s, in the market for a good tenor. I think I'm quite picky, want good sound with certain types of wood.
I found a nice Tanglewood made tenor only for 500, hardcase + aquila strings selling in Guitar Collections. Sound is acceptable. Very nice and clean built. Workmanship is excellent. Wood is Mahogany. Tempted but since my Kala is already Mahogany and don't plan to sell it, I let the deal passed =(

Hi,

New member here. You are right about the sound of the colourful Seven Tones ukes being muffled. I bought a white coloured, concert sized one and was so disappointed by that soft sound. didn't expect that as it came with aquila strings!. I suspected that the paint job was too thick so I sanded the top board , and later the whole uke) down. I was presently surprised by the nice wood underneath. It's laminated maple I think with laminated mahogany ( I think) as the side wood. the back also looks like laminated maple. The neck was made with a type of wood with a nice grain ( a few knots here and there made it fantastic).

Just below the paint you'd find a layer of laquer that gives the wood a very smooth surface that may make you want to stop there what with the nice natural colour of the wood and all. But that layer of laquer would still stiffle the sound. I ended up sanding that away too and later applying a mahogony wood tone.

The uke opened up and I was so happy that I did that. I ended up buying another one ( a purple coloured one this time) and immediately started to sand down the thing. I stopped at the laquer this time (instead of sanding that away), and made another sound-hole at the side ( following the Riptide brand's uke). It sounds fantastic!

Not only do the ukes sound louder, they look beautiful as well!

If you are adventurous enough, invest in some sand-papers and do the same. a word of caution though, take your time in sanding - don't press too hard.

The laminated all mahogany seven tones UL 21 sopranos however are already loud out of the box. They are nice except for some minor issues like the saddle being too thin its space in the bridge (corrected by inserting some toothpicks there) and the white plastics (where the tuners go through) at the headstock falling off.

But the beautiful sound they produce, makes you forgive all that. I have two of that too. smile.gif

Happy ukeing.

For 160.. I really encourage you to look into other ukes. I bought a Seven Tone before and I don't consider that as a proper ukulele. Compared to my soprano Kala, its thinner and tinier. Sound quality is quite bad, even after replacing strings with Aquila and lowering the action. It doesn't carry and sounded weak. I really don't recommend this ukulele if you see yourself playing ukulele long term.
There's a shop in Mutiara Damansara selling Samick. So far I found that its the best ukes for price below 200. Comes with aquila strings.
In batu caves area, there's a shop called Ukulele Malaya. A lot of variety but the good beginner costs around 200-300. I gotten my Kala15s from here. Its a very good starting ukulele. Won't break your bank but still sounds good enough that you won't feel so disappointed comparing tones in Youtube while learning =D

If its too far, there's a guy in LYN selling Eddy Finns. The workmanship isn't so good, there's excess glue at sides and brace but mostly you could sandpaper it away. Doesn't come with aquila. I bought from all mentioned sellers before.

There's another seller, I can't vouch for him since I haven't dealt with him personally before. His packages is quite reasonable for beginner, as some contains tuner and bag. His shop is somewhere in USJ, Subang.

Good luck in your ukulele hunt.

Btw guys, I created an Ukulele thread. Hope you guys can drop by a hi =D

Mutiara Damansara? Do you have an address or anything? I'm still new to KL. And how to get there by public transport?

The Seven Tone Concert Ukulele is from Maestro Uke. unsure.gif

Here, Do Re Mi, Mutiara Damansara
It's past Ikano/ The Curve/ Ikea area.
Here's the seller contact in LYN, not sure if she's still active though. A very nice lady. Seems you found her thread too lol.

Oh Maestro's is carrying Seven Tones? It's cheap but I really don't recommend it. Here's his shop's blog, if you haven't found it.
http://ukulelestore.blogspot.com/
From what I see in their store, Makai is pretty ok, their designs seems to be similar to notable brands like Ohana. So is Cordoba, it's originally a Portugal guitar making company that expanded into ukuleles. The rest looks pretty dodgy. This especially goes for Mahalo and Waikiki, which have a terrible reputation. Avoid these

I realized all these is probably overwhelming, if you have the chance it's best to go to a shop to look and feel the instrument. Its ok to hold and tell the shopkeeper you're a beginner, hopefully the guy is friendly. I took my sweet time choosing my first uke in Ukulele Malaya and the owner is just right beside telling me what to choose and how to play. He even brought out the cheapo ukuleles and played for me to compare the sound quality.
Anyhow my best advice to you right now is, avoid Seven Tones. And those ukuleles that's been cutely painted. Unless done right, the paint will deteriorate the sound further. It's usually a cheap way to market a cheap plywood ukulele.

edit: btw I bought my Seven Tone for RM100 only, comes with tuner.

Maestro shop is at Taipan there.. in the middle of very busy rows and rows of shops there.. hard to get parking there also.. I bought a 'K' brand there.. haha not what u think, it's Kahalu'u.. never thought I will bought that brand.. but since I personally went there and try it, I do like the Kahalu'u sound and feel.. a cutaway with pickup..

so very highly advisable to go to try the ukulele personally before getting it..

anyone up for a uke meeting? biggrin.gif
