QUOTE(jchue73 @ Mar 6 2015, 11:26 AM) Why still use tapered square? If I were given the chance to change the BB, I'll change to a different one that is more superior. |

QUOTE(desastar @ Mar 6 2015, 08:09 PM) Nothing wrong with square tapered bb. Beauty is you can get better looking crank sets to match, unlike the ugly modern Shimano ones.... Reason on why touring bikes uses square taper is simple. Square taper is available anywhere , even in small kampong bikeshop or any bike shop for that matter. Touring means, you travel everywhere with your bike, like those 'mat sallehs' you see riding with big panniers on the road. If they were to use hollow tech or octal link etc, the parts are hard to source in small towns. Also those common cone bearings bottom bracket uses square tapered spindles , so although quality is not good, at least it will help you to replace temporarily. They also just started to use disc brakes on touring bikes which many tourers don't want to. They still want to stick to V-brakes as they are also easy to source. And if you use hydraulic disc brake systems, stick with Shimano, Tektro or another brand (can't recall which brand) which uses mineral oil while others still uses dot oil. This is because in emergency, you can fill the reservoir with cooking oil to operate the brake. |

And for most people, including myself, will not be able to tell the difference if blindfolded....If weight is the issue, then don't use these. |

Hey guys, I'm new to folding bike and I have some questions to ask all the sifu here.
I'm looking for a rather affordable folding bike and here are some of the characteristics I'm looking for: Wheel size: 26 or 24 inch (tried smallish one before and do not prefer it) Look: Since I chose 24 or 26, obviously look kinda important. 20 inch just looks weird on me, I'm 180cm tall at around 66kg. The more it looks like conventional bike the better? Use case: Just riding in taman area or maybe on asphalt to nearby shops. Occasionally might want to travel a few KM on it, maybe 10KM+ for longer casual ride. Fold-ability: I don't see myself as a commuter, so it is probably not the most important one. But I'm looking at something which can fit into my kinda limited Iriz's boot trunk (only 210+ liter unfolded, but it does come with 6:4 folding feature). I can see myself packing it back to my hometown. Budget: Few hundreds? Counterfeit or not is not an issue, as long as the quality is decent for my use cases. I saw some people selling some "HUMMER" and "Land Rover" branded one on Lelong. Upon researching, I know they are kinda counterfeit. There are also even some even cheaper one like 'GAMMAX', I assume from China? The question is, are those of decent quality for my use cases? I don't mind lengthy and detailed reply. In fact I want to pick up as much as I can before I purchase. So thanks first all sifu~ Edited for better formatting. This post has been edited by RhythmYun: Mar 7 2015, 12:57 PM |
