Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a tortoise for my backyard. Something really really huge and friendly and don't require much attention. Any suggestions and where can I buy it?
*
QUOTE(stanny @ Oct 4 2006, 12:33 PM)
I think I rather see how it grows up which would be pretty cool. So leopard or sulcata eh? Only 88 dollars for a baby one? How long does it take to grow to that size? 6 years?! Darn, if that's the case, on second thought, maybe I rather get one which is semi-huge already.
*
haha not RM88 laa. 88 is the name of the pet shop. biggrin.gif . the price is hundreds of RM (dont know exact price). i dont know where you can get adult tortoises. Unless a previous owner wants to sell his smile.gif .if pet shops sell adults, confirm thousands of RM

Radiated are expensive. Burmese Star are more expensive.

I found one vege that my RES finally will eat. rclxms.gif well not vege actually but one of my aquarium plants. i think it's called anacharis. RM1.50 for one tie (has 4 to 5 stems). not that expensive but still not as cheap as kangkung sad.gif . BTW, i wonder if it is sufficient to just provide this type of plant in replace of veges? blink.gif

That one should not be used as a daily food. Just for stuff for them to play or for fun.

Is it because they do not contain enough nutrients? or because the turtles do not really eat but rather just gigit2 saja
QUOTE(White Palace @ Oct 6 2006, 01:20 AM)
actually im thinking of rearing a tortoise, but what kind of tortoise is more suitable to stay outdoor, to walk freely at a compound?
*

to be safe try and get a tortoise thats already adult size and huge (but hard to find at pet shop plus must cost a bomb). Reason is adult are more hardy plus shell already super hard so dont have to worry so much of predators.
QUOTE(titansulcata @ Oct 6 2006, 08:32 AM)

malaysians 'fund' illegal exotic wildlife trade

the writter even spy a few shops including pets family

they mention tortoise is quite common...

Hope they don't put a ban

Everyone's on exam week i supposed, including me. LOL. Thanks for the wishes.
Yeah, but breeding turtles/tortoise is a bit hard. Will try my best to make it a successfull breeding project.
p/s: Btw, i just came across a wild Asian Leaf Turtles on my way back to cyberjaya. A female, quite big, bigger than any Asian Leaf i had.  thumbup.gif I took it home and wash it and feed it. There's a lot of them here, just that they are inside the forest next to the road. I wonder where they'd go if the government cut all those trees and develop cyberjaya even more.  sad.gif
*

Where did you specifically found them? Which forest? I work in cyberjaya but never noticed one.

chaco? wat's tat?

and if it's de elongated... as i see it's nice... but it's not so nice on de pics i found on de net about elongated... de one i see are more light beige even it's carapace too but most pics on elongated i've seen are mostly brown wif patches and yes, de patches are very much like elongated....

btw, wat's de market price are like? expensive?? as i see my dad client's house are for sure EXPENSIVE! hahaaa!! donno whether the pet is or not tho tat's not de solely pet around... hehe...

maybe post a picture for us next time you go there. then we can tell the species
QUOTE(uzairi @ Oct 9 2006, 11:45 AM)
Well, it seems that ure not giving it the right foods. I wonder why, mine was healthy even without basking them under the sun. Only pellets and the shell is strong. I feed mine with Nutrafin Basix and Sanyu turtle sticks.
*
QUOTE(ekiddie @ Oct 9 2006, 12:40 PM)
and yes... i don sun them either... they grew well without any problem... hmm... i oso just feed my RES turtle pellets and some veges... mostly cabbage...

neway, would wanna ask haf anyone here had a problem wif their turtles growing algae/fungus on their carapace? mine did! hmm... and i never had this problem b4 but now... why and what's de cause?

here's how it looks like...

user posted image

it's my noti lil' stinkpot... hehe...

wink.gif
*
If you guys dont sun them then do you provide your RES with uv bulb? blink.gif. If dont then maye just provide calcium food is enough
algae on the carapace is confirmed because of the water quality. not really a problem because in the wild this acts as camouflage. but as a pet, of course dont look nice la

kena bitten by razors and not on de finger but at de skin's part... de most vulnerable to bites! hahaaa!! nvm lar... learn...

go petsmore... got black breasted leafs there... 3 of 'em... nice!

all de radiated i saw are > RM1K... i wonder, are they THAT nice? i see sulcata looked alot nicer than radiated... to those who donno... radiated = stars to them! hahaaa!!

kamekame... u want malayan box turtles ka? next round i go Penang, i get it for u want? they don cost high price... but definately special than a normal RES lor... hehe... actually, their carapace are nice too and it's an easy turtle to pet... they can be dry, lil' damp or even on wet... works well for malayan box...

de malayan box turtle that i have r being rescued from a bunch of punks tat DON't have the love for animals... huh!  vmad.gif

can give direction how to go there?

err used to have a map but i think i've deleted it.

go along the cheras highway going to pj at midvalley (either from cheras or from plus highway). just after the junction coming in from PLUS, you can see a junction just before a flyover to your left (signboard says taman desa something). take that junction and go straight and you will reach a trafiic light. go straight untill you see a row of shops on your left. its located there next to a saloon.

the shop is actually more of a fish shop and the tokey there is excellent when it comes to fish and aquarium plants. only once a while do they have turtles. rather ill treated i should say. they dont really know how to treat turtles.

BTW the shop is closed on mondays

those snails very easy one. my aquarium have lots of them. they usually come with aquarium plants. just get two snails and place in a plastic container ( you can even use the 1.5liter plastic bottle). put beside window for sunlight. you can put some plants or veges for start (later they just eat the algae). in 1 to 2 weeks time they'll multiply like crazy.
