nolar, people in the planted aquarium community always do this to jimat kos. cost of a planted aquarium is way way higher than for a turtle/tortoise. have to be careful though how you place the wiring at your aquarium sweat.gif

QUOTE(nezumitaro @ Sep 25 2006, 02:55 PM)
want to ask, are they smelly?

WAWWW ur tortoise very beautiful!!! but i see u buy alot of things for them wor..
*
the turtles are not smelly, just that the water will become smelly if you dont change it often enough. the stuff that i buy for them are considered "basic". no cosmetic/decoration pun smile.gif

Wow...sayasebuk,

Very nice home for your Box turtle smile.gif Cool!  thumbup.gif He/She must be real happy and lucky to have met you! Did you stick that platform by yourself? Its glass or plastic?
Kamekame.

it's glass. sent to glass shop. had to pay extra RM40. (actually not hard to do yourself. but quite hard to find a suitable sized glass). have to check their work though, because mine was leaking water at the basking area. had to use silicone sealant to cover the leak thumbup.gif

QUOTE(titansulcata @ Sep 25 2006, 04:00 PM)
not smelly at all...  i remove the shit every day. the bedding will absorb their pee too. it is definately much cleaner and easier to maintan than water based turtle

QUOTE(meiteoh @ Sep 26 2006, 08:35 AM)
Well, Tortue is active but I'm more concerned about him getting D3. Been very hazy so virtually no sun. At the moment I have him on D3 supplement but I don't think it's enough lor coz I see something weird on his shell (maybe I'm just being paranoid.)

UVB lamps are too expensive especially when you get sunlight for free all year round. Hmm...maybe I ought to take him back home to sun during the weekends. >.<
*

not that expensivela. my uvb bulb is rm42 (20 watt 24") and the holder cost me RM36.50 (DIY one)

if bulbs than cannot help. very very very expensive one. rclxub.gif try looking at places other than pet family. i noticed that they tend to overprice the products. good luck though. i havent found them at any other place. even some shops that sell exo-terra stuff haven't heard of it icon_rolleyes.gif

Do you guys monitor the temperature of your turtles enclosure, especially for those species with from different climates. blink.gif

For my RES, i know that their from the US, and most websites recommend that the temperature for the basking area and water area to be way way lower than the temperature that i am having now for my RES. they even recommended me to buy a chiller! shocking.gif which is way way expensive. should this be of any concern? could it be that the RES sold here are locally bred and therefore already adapted/evolved to our climate?

maybe i should install a fan at my res aquarium (similar like the one i used for my planted aquarium)

QUOTE(uzairi @ Sep 26 2006, 03:00 PM)
Those RES are from Eastern US, yes. But those we have are CB here and they live with our climate quite well too. I even put my RES enclosure out of the house and they have a natural sunlight basking spot which at noon is quite hot. And 50% of the enclosure is water. If they feel hot, they will go inside the water or hide under a pot i put. So dont worry about them, they are the most hardy turtles ive ever met.
p/s: Ive added owner's turtles/tortoise list at Page 1. Kindly list down what u have and i'll update the list. Tq.  cool.gif
*

pheww. glad to hear that sweat.gif. i was afraid that our climate had anything to do with the condition of my turtles
my turtle list:
1.0.0 - Cuora Amboinensis (you sure ke uzairi mine is male?)
0.2.0 - Trachemys scripta elegans (at least i think they're female)

QUOTE(meiteoh @ Sep 26 2006, 03:48 PM)
Damnit. No sun today when my colleague took Tortue out to sun - rain somemore. >.<

Eessshhh...looks like I had better go get that UVB bulb la and take him home on the weekends. >.<
*

maybe you can buy the shortest reptiglo bulb which is only 15 inches. i think that not be too long. the price is below RM40 somemore

Sayasebudak: Tak boleh oso. I'm using my office table lamp - just substituting the bulb.

Anyway, I forked out RM200 for one UVB bulb (7% UVB), and two basking lights - ExoTerra Basking Spot and ExoTerra Daylight Bulb (one of the is 60W, the other is 50W)...and RM1.50 for filter sponge.  sweat.gif

Oh, I took some pics of Tortue, have a look and see if:

(pics are too big so pls click on the link!)

1) Is he shedding skin or what? (look at the face!)
- http://static.flickr.com/79/253219647_d07c730e4b.jpg

2) Is he growing new shutes or suffering from "soft-shell syndrome"? Look carefully around the tail on the left side.
- http://static.flickr.com/88/253219662_ed09d3c957_o.gif
- http://static.flickr.com/112/253219657_2712d68e4b_o.gif (bottom)
- http://static.flickr.com/89/253219652_ae9f8f804b_o.gif (under water and at a certain angle)
*
Fot the first two picts, i think just normal shedding. I saw the same thing with my two RES. The faster they grow, the more skin you will see. My littlest RES sheds more skin than her bigger sister. When i bought them, she was way smaller. Now they are already the same size (after 3 mths).
FOr the rest of the picts, i think your tortue is beginning to get problems like my two RES. Furthermore, do you see any pink area at the plastron (under shell). i read that this should also be a concern.

QUOTE(uzairi @ Sep 26 2006, 11:22 PM)
80% sure. But can u confirm wether the plastron got concave or not ? If concave confirm 100% male.
*
The thing is, im not sure whether its concave or not. Nampak macam tak. May need to look at some examples

Too expensive, i think its better if we buy those big blue tank and DIY it ourself. The problem is they are not that portable anymore after it is completed since we going to make it like a natural habitat. Soils, small trees, 50% land 50% water.  brows.gif  brows.gif
Nope, no new local Asian Turtles. Maybe their mating season ended, so no more seeing them at the illegal markets.  rolleyes.gif

how much does the blue tank cost anyway?

I kept my 11 Malayan Box inside the blue tank, 100% water tho but not that deep. Everyday need to clean it. sweat.gif

Tortoises can be placed inside the blue tank also, put some soil, natural plants and pots for their hiding place. wub.gif

100% water meaning no basking spot? BTW by using water tanks, how do you manage filtering and water changing? Been hovering in my mind for quite some time smile.gif

How should i say... 1/3 of the turtles's height.  There's no basking spot which is really dry. They go get natural sunlight indirectly since i put them outside of the house. I dont use any filtering device for them, changing their water manually every 2 days is a must. And when im not at home, its either my dad or my little bro who's gonna do it.  laugh.gif
Wah, beneath the vege ar ? Later sufffocated. Quite big ally they have there, maybe can be my ally's fren.  blush.gif

change manually meaning cedok air using pail & bucket? Or do the tanks have pipes/taps that you can turn on to remove the water?

This is true, added that their most active time is afternoon.
I just terbalikkan the tank and wash it. Turtles were running here and there that time, me n my bro kejar each of them. Then i refill the tank back with water and place them back inside.  thumbup.gif
True that tortoise are heavier than turtles. They also sleep most of the time since they dont need to find water and food.  doh.gif
*

wa lau weeyy, every two days have to do that? konfirm i cannot do. balik from work always near dusk. ill need to think a strategy hehe.
BTW for your turtles do you just use tap water or decholrinated salted water?

DO you guys know what are the top 5 biggest tortoise? I've been phantasizing. wouldn't it be cool during hari raya, people come to your house and get the shock of their life after seeing a few giant tortoises roaming around your house. thumbup.gif . that really is something you dont see everyday. i know i haven't seen it. in fact, i've never even seen a house with baby/juvenile pet tortoises/turtles let alone adults.

i know galapagos and sulcata are among the top 5 icon_rolleyes.gif

will it be safe for water turtles??

I i recognize them correctly, than i think there should be no problem. I've had them both in my turtle aquariums before. but decided not put anymore. because will easily die and clog my filter. usually because not enough nutrition, or got whacked by the turtles smile.gif

Updates on my turtle. Went to see a vet at City Pets Serdang last saturday. I brought all three of my turtles.
Findings:
Eventhough the vet is not an exotice/herp vet, she seems to know what she's doing and quite experienced. notworthy.gif Apparantly she has received a lot of visits from turtle owners (most of the time from some radiated owners who lives nearby). She gave some antibiotics and shell care stuff. She found nothing wrong with my malayan box turtle. (my box turtle no longer swims lopsided BTW). rclxm9.gif
All in all i was quite satisfied with the vet. I can see that she likes pet (she kept talking to the turtles) smile.gif .

BTW since i havent named my turtles (im bad with names), i've decided to call them
abang (malayan box), kakak (older RES) and adik ( younger RES) wub.gif

Which part of Serdang ? And how do u feed them antibiotics ? How much does it costs ?
*
Forgot to mention, it was only RM15. She gave me some liquid antibiotics to be fed directly to the RES. (if i want to give to the box turtle, should put it into his food since he is not sick). I read somewhere that it is better to inject antibiotics than to feed them. dont know how true though.
The clinic is at serdang raya. its along the road from seri kembangan to K.L when you want to skip sg besi tol (PLUS). The doctor that i met was dr goh. they have 3 doctors i think.
BTW i think confirmla my box turtle is a he smile.gif
