QUOTE(sayasebuk @ Feb 24 2007, 06:22 PM) Update on my RES 2 1/2 feet tank. removed the driftwood. result in cleaner water. also add a fake plant and built a new basking area QUOTE(sayasebuk @ Feb 24 2007, 06:56 PM) Updates on my 3 feet malayan box setup. removed the driftwood and covered the peat moss with real grass and some stones. results in cleaner water, plus easier to clean . for my previous setup, go to my pet album A+ setup for both your RES and Boxie.

QUOTE(ntlc87 @ Feb 25 2007, 11:42 PM) nice set up..for the RES in the 1st post.. how do u make the basking place? wut is that? somekind of floating thing that is actually the rocky background made for aquariums. made of styrofoam i think. costs between RM12 - RM15 for a 2 feet piece. I just used some leftovers that i cut from my other aquarium and siliconed it in place. dunno whether it will hold once the turtles get heavy. for now it is doing ok. i just noticed a few days back that the turtles actually swallowed the small pieces of loose styrofoam. i noticed this from their poo. i dunno if this is dangerous to the turtles but i guess it's ok since they are excreted with their poo. the small pieces are round and very very small.

Be careful of impaction even thou some of the very small pieces are excreted with their poo I believe some still remain inside
Fine Sand which are smaller than the small pieces of loose styrofoam you mention and some but not all are always excreted with their poo in all Chelonian kept outdoors No matter how fine the sand are they still cause impaction
All the best

Better to get rid of the styrofoam or make sure that no impaction occurs (by feeding them certain foods to allow easier excretion?) I currently have an idea of covering the styrofoam with aquairum silicone at the loose areas.

Silicon might cause a problem too when the turtle chew them.

QUOTE(uzairi @ Feb 26 2007, 09:26 PM) Silicon might cause a problem too when the turtle chew them. do they chew silicone? if im not mistaken even aquarium tanks are using silicone to hold the glass together. Never saw them chew it. Since the silicone is non-toxic i guess the danger would just be impaction right?

They might chew on the silicon surface which are accessible to them the best they can do to the tank's silicon are to claw them out but RES and Boxie are not strong enough (both type of Snapper on the other hand are strong enough to clawed out the silicon holding the tank )

They do when they can, like what sam said they might have the opportunity to claw them out especially from a long-used aquarium.
