my brother used note 3, and he cant root without tripping KNOX and voiding warranty. I used nexus 5 because it is the phone to go to if we want root hack custom thingy...(my hacker friend manage to convince me) but the lack of SD card is driving me nuts. I consume content as much as I can download. 32gb is small. I need 1tb built in phone if i cant have sd card slot.

I want to find a phone that can root and restore back to stock without manufacturer knows.

I also want a phone that have SD card support. I can live with swapping out few 32gb or few 64gb sd cards. i used to have compact camera with a lot of 8gb cards, and I dont mind swapping around and I have good system to know what is contain what. so to people with "you have 2 sd card also dont use, confuse, etcc..." i dont. YOU DO.

easy or not rooting is subjective, I dont mind typing commands in cmd or installing drivers.

I am eyeing LG G3, but does it have safety mechanism like Samsung KNOX that makes rooting hell?

About voiding the warranty. I think only Oneplus One will not void warranty if it is rooted. Coz it's dy running on CM.

For rooting, better refer to the individual phone threads. Coz diff phone diff feature. Some can just use rootkit, while some is troublesome like hell.

xiaomi mi3 is your best choice

at RM800. Mi3 is best bang for buck.

U can also consider Moto G lte, Zenfone 5. But in terms of specs, Mi3 definitely higher than these 2.

But some phone we can revert back to their stock to return for warranty. Only samsung I think have some hardware level detection like KNOX. once tripped, its over. So I dont know about other phone as my family member only have Samsung and Apple.

Ya, I agree with hellish procedure to root. I tried to root my friend CSL phone, almost made it to paperweight... really lucky I can revert back to stock, if not I must replace his phone lor.

For me, it's between M8 and Z2. Z2 might have slight edge on camera department over M8. Another aspect to look at is, do u like HTC Sense UI or Xperia's stock looking UI?

Camera not really issue for me.. i like stock gui but somehow dont find Z2 ngam with me..

I always play with my cousin's M8. Sense UI seems to be quite stable imo. Just that I dun like it personally.

If u like stock UI, I think u'll like Xperia's UI. Sony did very well in keeping it minimalistic.

How bout sound? If u wan loud and good sound quality, then I think M8 is better with the Boombox speaker. Really damn loud and clear. Z2's speaker imho, feels a bit soft, maybe due to it being water resistant.

It's hard to find Flip out Qwerty keyboard phone.
Just use 100% touch screen phone. It's easy actually

yea. M8 would be gud then. Maybe u can try to go to phone shop and hands on with both Z2 and M8. specs is 1 thing, but when u touch it in real life. Ergonomics might play some part too. Like which is nicer to grip with 1 hand, which is easier to unlock due to the position of power button.

Zenfone 5's camera's low light performance shud b better due to PixelMaster technology.

I would recommend Z2 actually. IPS screen, 20MP camera, Xperia UI which looks like stock android.

AP set warranty is by phone shop, u nid to send back to the shop that u purchase for warranty purpose. While for Ori set, u can send ur phone to any Sony Center for warranty purpose.

Well. If u can live with 3rd party shop warranty, can go for ap set. But if u wan a peace of mind, go for ori set.

Can also search at Garage sales, I think 2nd hand set is around 1.6k.

Samsung Grand 2 is dual sim non lte.
I used that before. I rather recommend you Xiaomi Mi3.
It has better camera, better process, OS and build.

Note that Mi3 using Sony Exmor RS 13.1MO camera with Phillips dual LED.

it seems so. Most of Sony's waterproof device have weaker speaker. Based on my observation that is.

If u can raise ur budget a bit, can get Redmi Note. Bigger screen is always better for elderly. Especially mums, since they'll have handbags.

Can someone please recommend me a phone with (but not limited to) the following criteria;

Brand:

A decent trustworthy brand. I wanted to say non-china brand, but it seems there has been an uprising in the quality of their phones and can go toe-to-toe (based on reviews) with the big name brands. So yeah, I'm up for anything when it comes to brands.

Budget:

Up to 1 to 1.5k (RM)

Specs:

Hardware that would be able to give a smooth experience. No slowdowns, hangs or simply breakdown when it comes to using basic,everyday apps (Whatsapp,Waze,a few simple puzzle games at most). And a decent amount of space (16g ~32g) if no SD card slot is available. And also a decent enough battery that could last the whole day through usage of said apps.

What I need in the phone:

I'm looking for a phone for my dad. The current phone he's using is an old symbian nokia. So, preferably the new phone is user friendly enough for him to make the jump (he does have an Ipad though).

I hope the phone will be good enough to be used straight out of the box without any need to be rooted.

Camera/Sound are negligible but durability and build if possible is on a decent level. Cosmetic wise a more professional/mature look to the phone is preferable.

ETC:

Currently looking at Moto G, One + One, Nexus 5. Please do recommend others if they are more suitable.

Was considering the Iphone..but the prices of new ones are kinda steep for me.

Same with my mom. 4.7 is the smallest she need to get.
Its not easy to read and type on smartphone screen.

My suggestion take the Xiaomi 1S as it have the simpler icon UI for the erderly.

Nexus 5, 32GB version at directD at 1300. Best phone for this.

i recommend redmi 1s, rm419, i bought a unit for my mum also, she 60++ first time smartphone user also, i put a data sim on sim 1 and her normal sim without data plan at sim2.

i helped her to change the text interface bigger so easy for her reading. if you can higher your budget, actually redmi note is the best .

if u want a smart phone can last for whole day and within your 3 preferable choice... then i pick 1+ over moto g as it has bigger screen. 1+ batter is better then nexus...

Performance is better S600 vs S800.
Camera is comparable 13.1 Samsung Vs Sony Exmor RS.
Battery is better. 2600mah vs 3000mah Mis3 battery.
OS is better, MIUI is better than Samsung TouchWiz.

I have 2 friends using S3 for 2 years migrated to Mi3.
It took them 1 week to adapt the new interface and they are happy since then.

Oneplus One all the way, it is milessss better than Moto G (moto G is a budget phone and it is not even comparable), and better than N5 in terms of screen quality, camera and battery.

About RM1300 for 64GB, comes with an excellent charger and premium build quality. Only have AP set but usually 2 years warranty.

So my 3-years old SII nearly came to its EOL now.. seeking recommendations for new phone. I got about RM1.6-1.7k for a new phone, and rite now eyeing either S5 or Z2. Since u are used to rooting and flashing custom rom on Samsung's phone, would recommend you S5 too. But u can always try new things with Xperia too.

Z3 is coming on the IFA event so i guess u should try wait for it first to compare...
As for G3... im using it myself... the battery does drain faster than HTC M8 but its has a very good user experince which i didnt regret buying it.. but still battery life arent satisfied... so u might have to prepare a powerbank if u r buying a G3...
