Yes, I still shoot film, on & off though and using expired 35mm. The prices of new negatives are getting expensive by the day. Currently I am using Yashica GSN, Pentax MX (yet to start shooting with it) and its brother, the Pentax ME super which has a dedicated "Auto" option on the main dial. Not shooting enough yet coz doesn't have much time nowadays.

That's a cool twin-lens you got there.

Hi, anyone here using the old trusty Pentax MX? Can they share some of their pics please?

I have gotten myself a unit and also bought the M 50mm f1.7 and a Vivitar 28mm f2.8 P/K mount.

The white area blank very distracting mad.gif , One thing I learn from this pic is that if the light is right and my shutter speed is right, I can get the focus right. Most of the time, me do camerashake, or mis focus. cry.gif

Previously i checked their film price was difference, maybe because of new owner took over oredi. You can call them up to double check on their scanning price. Never heard of BangBangGang but i heard some reasonable price from FotoMega Desa Setapak.

Does anyone know where in Selangor got kedai selling old Nikon slr camera accessories like lens cap or body F-mount cap. My camera don't have body cap so lots of dust built up inside the mirror and view finder. Now temporary solution i just locked on the reverse ring and screw the ND filter on it. icon_question.gif

If you look at right and bottom of the sign "U3", you see all white. Overexposed until see blank. shocking.gif Maybe I screw up my pp. Or I have to do some dodging/masking which I'm just too lazy to do. blush.gif

ShangHai 4 is the earlier product before it's rebranded as Seagull 4. The one i got is the original version with three-element cooke triplet lenses. Heard later versions with Tessar lenses have better bokeh though. However i very happy already cause finally got my first medium format camera.

You cat pics not showing the full potential bokeh of the lens. By that I mean no swirl, no light balls .... if only you had included some shots with cleavage .... hmm.gif .... lens will sell like hot cake (bahulu panas). tongue.gif

Waa fungus cry.gif ...

Linhof? hmm.gif You want to fondle or take pictures? flex.gif If fondle, then German (or Swiss) cameras are the best to fondle rclxm9.gif . If take pictures, then better spend less on camera more for film/developing sweat.gif . Most LF cameras are basically just a box, meaning no funky timing gear mechanism, no shutter, springs etc. Hmm ... come to think of it, what kind of fondling you can do with a Linhof ah? (I dun have any Linhof.) Maybe open and close, raise and lower drawbridge? Don't think Linhof have trigger button to hear thwack of mighty big of mirror. shakehead.gif

guys where do you scan in kl? preferably near subang jaya area..

i stopped shooting film when i was sent by gomen to work in some ulu place, and got digital instead for a year. plus the shop i used to send for developing c41 closed down. sad.gif

but i have more than 12 rolls left in cold storage and i am keen to burn my rolls with some nice light.

if it would be possible i was wondering whether the op could make the list of developing/selling film into the first post.

thanks a ton

not sure on Subang are but there is a few that i tried before.....Leos ampang point, Esix and colordotcom.

Also, bang bang gang in publika.

i sent mine to Leos ampang point, Esix and colordotcom before...both are disastrous experience.I'm a newbie in film n those experience nearly scare me away from film.Imagine that u need to spend the money to buy film, to send your film to develop and collection of scan copy, only then u found out the scan quality really sucks.I sending my 2 rolls to bang bang gang to try out, if all the same, must well i give up.

But it just probably me or due to my camera format.Cheers.

Hi,

glad that you have a GX, its a great camera. Very sharp and easy to use.

Ok, about the battery. The original battery from its time were no longer produced since they are mercury-based. The replacement I have found is from a few sources. You can check them out below:

1. DIY Yashica GX battery

2. PX640

3. eBay adapters

There you go, choose one. It all works. Good luck. Let me know the results ok?

The best is PX640, they maybe a bit expensive but in the long run, its the easiest

Edit: you can get the new px640 here, known as the px640a: px640a

You will need two (2) of them.

On a TLR, since you are looking/composing via the top lens, the aperture is not doing much compared to aperture on a SLR. Aperture can be at whatever setting since you're not looking through the taking lens. So I don't think its a big problem.

Shutter on the other hand has to open and close each time you take a picture. Perhaps you're seeing oil on the shutter blades instead of aperture blade? hmm.gif

It is the aperture, just underneath the shutter blade but not connected mechanism. I have seen it when i used bulb mode or view from the film compartment. Anyway, that's how I am comforting myself for not affecting anything. Some [slash]bad[/slash] helpful guys in APUG saying that it could lead to haze or splatter to lense, if that is the worst case. That's what I am worried about. Well, what can I do for now is let it sit. if things come to worst, I might just disassemble the lense and clean in from there using q-tips or send it for CLA.

What TLR model is it? flex.gif

If Rolleiflex 2.8, then worry lorr ... expensive camera, expensive repair cry.gif . If some other brand, maybe you will have courage to DIY. I think can unscrew the rear element hmm.gif . Safer if have the correct lens spanner.

Worse case scenario, shoot wide open with black and white film. Haze can become "glow". tongue.gif

i recently just restored a tlr myself. (no choice, i cant find any camera shop that still offer such repair service in my area). Now my tlr is fully functional. If the tlr is not a luxury or collector model, suggest u hv a try for it.
However, before u start, must do some research on it. Search online from other forum, the explode view of the camera, camera's manual...etc will help u alot.

As for your aperture blade oil, is it affect the aperture blade open and closing mechanism? If the aperture blade still snappy, then it is no big deal. If you really need to diy service, open the tlr, and clean using lighter fluid gently. Do not use force to open any parts.

Finally, you can search and refer to my old thread in Lowyat regarding "ShangHai TLR". Hope this help. Thanks

A rolleiflex it is. I am a fan of rolleiflex and collect a couple of 35mm and 120 rollei models. Things got better when I leave it it wide open and placed in my box overnight. A part of it dried up. I guess I am just over reacting.

Hi there, thanks for the helpful post. Just read through and I would do the same i it is seagull or shanghai TLR. Need to grow some guts to do so too. No, it doesn't affect the mechanism. So I will just leave as it is for now till it need some major overhaul. Anyway, the post is really helpful. Is your TLR still working? Thanks.

i agree with the guts... last time i struggled for 1 whole week before i removed the first screw... after that you will go through it. yes... my tlr is working fully now. although it is not a rollei, but i'm having great fun and satisfaction during the process of restoring it. however still no time for shootout.

What kind of smell? If cigarette it is really hard to remove. I purchased a used lightmeter from a smoker before and it smells bad. i used alcohol swap to clean it several times and air in for a couple of days. Be careful using alcohol on leather / rubber surfaces as the reaction might dried them up. Leave it for a couple of days and see if it still smells. One method i used on my lightmeter is to lock it in a sealed box with ground coffee.

OT: Do you guys have any compilation of photolabs that does film scanning with sophisticated scanners? It would be really helpful. One of the photolab that I know of using plustek 120. Looking for a better one. Those with hasselblad, noritsu, drum etc could be really helpful.

Anyone tried the new epson film scanner? v800/850

Want to know a few things:

1. Best places in KL to buy/order online (all 35mm) Kodak Ektar 100, Kodak Portra 400, Kodak Portra 800, Fuji Superia 800 at good reasonable prices.

2. Anywhere that sells Fuji Superia 800, haven't seen it sold anywhere in this country.

3. Is it a good idea to buy a Pentax K1000 because I'm worried I wont be able to find lenses for it, at least at reasonable prices.

Thanks in advance to anyone that helps

hello... Dont know whether will help you, but for the films, normal film can buy at local shops. For special films you might need to buy online, or search from taobao or ebay.

For the camera, Pentax K1000 is a good camera. The Pentax K mount lenses you can use on pentax dslr directly, or other dslr with proper adapter. You can easily find good old manual lenses from ebay at very reasonable price. Hope this help. Also other sifus please correct me if got mistake or addon.

Anyone tried the new epson film scanner? v800/850
*
the epson v800 price so high... but i believe it is capable of getting the best details even from small 35mm format film. -.-'''

btw I am using my old epson v500.

Pentax are good, provided that the camera body are in good condition. Importing camera related accessories are tax free if i am not wrong, so you can find the lenses from (flea)bay easily. Not sure after GST implemented though.

for films, there are plenty of stores in kl that selling films at competitive price. Pricing from different brands could be differ from each store, so you got to survey around. I got my MF films from bang bang gang in publika, and I find them quite cheap for selected films.

Never used them before, so I was reading around flickr other forums to find out details. Currently I am using DSLR macro method, pretty good result, but take some times to work on rolls. It seems epson haven't release the new scanner yet in malaysia, hope the pricing is close to what v700 priced at tongue.gif

Cant afford full CLA.

Use baby wipes to wipe?

Put it under the sun?

Maybe you can try using alcohol swaps like pop the bubbles say

and then later on spray fabreeze on a piece of cloth and wipe it, all the best! biggrin.gif

Ooh, thanks everyone for the answers! But I've decided to hunt for a Nikon F3 to be my main camera.

And I'll be sure to check out around KL for these films as I've found them pretty hard to find from local suppliers (online or random camera stores near me).

It would be great if you guys could help suggest a film store near Shah Alam as I'm still quite lazy to go to KL tongue.gif

And if there's none, please help suggest other film stores in/around KL other than that one in Publika, thanks everyone!

I think he meant whether you use flatbed scanner, dedicated film scanner or macro lens to convert your film shots to digital. You get better definition with some dedicated film scanner and macro lens.

You can't go wrong with both. F2 is full mechanical and works even the battery is dead, but require an external lightmeter. F3 is electronic camera and has better meter.

No worries, just shoot and share. Might be the shop pushed it for you. during scanning. You can check you negatives yourself whether it is exposed properly. However film has better dynamic range, so i think it is able to tolerate the mistake made for 1-2 stops.

It was my mistake because i forgot the ISO of the film was 200... and I set it to 400 on my metering doh.gif

I believe the F3 uses lcd to display the meter reading. I have had a few lcds die on me, mostly calculators. So check the LCD properly and make sure they are readible before you buy. Or you can get the FE or FM2/FM3. They are not as pretty but they have simpler needle/led meter. They don't have removable prisms but on a 35mm camera, its a bit pointless to have waist level finder. tongue.gif

check this out bro... from ebay..
http://www.ebay.com.my/sch/Film-Cameras-/1...refLoc=2&_sop=2

i think if under critical situation or disaster that cut off power supply, such as heavy flood, earthquake, storms... etc, we will have difficulty to recharge our digital cameras when we run out of spare batteries. mechanical camera that no need battery to operate might be an alternative to take photos (ie for documentary purposes) under such situations.

where are you based in? there are a lot of labs and shops in KL still offering the service, postage or drop in. You may want to consider to self develop as the chemical for BW quite easy to get hold to compared to c-41 or e6 etc. Though the scanning and dust cleaning is quite tricky for BW, but that is the fun of shooting film.

Quite interesting survey though, sharing is good:

ilford had conducted a survey, and found out the film user is started to increase again.
"Of all the respondents, 30% of them were aged under 35. Of those photographers, roughly 60% of them have been using film for less than half a decade. One of the big ways people got started was by first receiving a film camera as a gift from a friend or family member. Thus, many people are still entering the world of film photography for the first time, even as film developing labs are closing and popular film stocks are being discontinued.

Those who do film are finding ways to do so without traditional classes and with a high degree of involvement. 84% of the survey participants said they learned how to use film on their own with help from books and the Web. 49% of them develop and print their images in a darkroom.

This second fact may explain why the dominant style of film photography is black-and-white. 98% of shooters say they shoot black and white, and 31% only shoot B&W. By comparison, only 2% of people exclusively use color film. As options for processing color film are dwindling and getting more expensive, it’s photographers who are processing B&W film themselves that aren’t as affected by the changing landscape of the industry."

Glad to hear that =D

I think I am more B&W now because for me color is difficult. I get the colors all wrong. I think need to calibrate for the yellow film thingy blink.gif .

I've never printed in darkroom cry.gif . Its a lot of stuff to buy sweat.gif , end up buy cheap scanner can do double duty. The chemicals for photo paper is not the same as film right? So have to buy more chems? hmm.gif

Where can I buy chemicals for processing colour film myself? The ones most people recommend are only from overseas and shipping is twice the price of the chemicals!

Thread still alive blink.gif ?!! rclxm9.gif

Which b&w film?

Tri-X, Ilford HP5 and Shanghai GP3 all good. GP3 don't have edge marking though. Personally for me, I go for cheapest ISO 400 films biggrin.gif .

Which scanner?

I use Canonscan. Its not the best, but I compensate using medium format. MF neg trays are sucky though shakehead.gif .

Where to process?

DIY at home. But now with ringgit belly flop and gst, buying film, chems, outils via internet is sooo expensive shocking.gif cry.gif .

Hi, I am not sure about Kepong area,

I always visit Uptown, shop name : colordotcom (near malaya optic), you can visit their physical shop or shop online for the film

link : http://color-dot-com-photo-lab.myshopify.com/collections/all

Or you can visit beng beng gang in Publika, they provide both services as well.

thanks, these photos were taken at Adelaide (sorry for the late reply sweat.gif )

btw this thread is so dead. Let me spam some pictures from my visit to melbourne recently.
All taken using Agfa vista plus 200. I accidentally use this film just because it was cheap, 15 dollars
for 3 rolls compared to superia 200 which was $30 for 3 rolls. So far i'm liking it

Hey guys just wondering how much would it cost to develop 35mm film (Colour and BW) and 120 film in Malaysia. I heard there's this place called Bang Bang Geng in Publika??? Did anyone tried their service before?? If so how much to they charge for Processing & Scanning.

Also how much does it cost for like maybe 5 rolls of Kodak Portra 160 120. Just wanna compare prices with UK since im residing in the UK but will be going back to Malaysia soon. Thinking of stocking up laugh.gif

Most of the films in the UK are more expensive than in Malaysia unless there are really good deals there. That was before the ringgit fall though. Haven't been asking around the price of films. I even tried talk to the camera shop nearby to keep the expired film and sell them cheaper, but it is rare occasion. One thing is that you can easily get good and rare range of films there.

Note that black and white flim is more exp around RM20+++ as he is doing it by hand and it take longer time... while colour flim used the machine to do so.

Anyway to get high speed colour flim in malaysia? like ASA 800? All i saw is only in black and white. icon_question.gif

Seems like people don't shoot slide film anymore, or at least get them developed as slides.

Got stuck in rush hour traffic and needed to find something to do.

A morning rush on the Fed. Highway during Ramadhan, pretty much stop-go traffic.
Exposure was something like 1/15 sec at f/2.8, metered using Pocket Light Meter.

This is fascinating, especially where agitation is via air bubbles. Normally when hand process, they say tap the tank to dislodge air bubbles.
