A true survival story, adapted from the bestselling 2000 memoir by
Cambodian activist Loung Ung as she and her family fled capture by
the invading movement led by Pol Pot.
The Khmer Rouge dismantled ever aspect of western life and
modern culture in Cambodia by force or death.
On the run and separated from her family, Ung is eventually
forced to train as a child soldier in order to survive.
Many rarely remember the Cambodia's Khmer Rouge genocide.
or talk about the Khmer Rouge era that started during the end
of the Vietnam war that erased an estimated quarter of the
nation’s population.
A rare film and a story that needs to be told.
This film it is far away from Angelina Jolie's best work
as a director.
But she has created an accomplished piece of work
which is of a genuine artistry and its fact quality.
She shows us the madness of the Pol Pot years from the
vantage point of a child.
Most of the film's visual language is not her alone.
Anthony Dod Mantle brings his signature oversaturated color
palette and his trademark roving digital camera to the picture
and gives its own personality.
The film has cleared one of the Academy's Oscar requirements
for consideration in the best foreign-language film category.
