After much heavy rumor, Nokia has just announced that it's launching its first Android handsets: the X, X+ and XL.

All the phones are built on the open source Android OS forked especially for Nokia. The X and X+ feature a 4-inch screen, while the XL packs a 5-inch IPS display. The X+ is differentiated from the X by extra memory and expandable storage, though it's not clear quite what that means in terms of specs.

During the Mobile World Congress presentation, Steve Elop explained that users will "benefit from the Android apps and ecosystem, but we have differentiated." Essentially that means that there will plenty of Microsoft and Nokia apps included from the get go. Skype, for instance, will be preinstalled, and offer users 1 month of free calls to landlines and mobiles, and Nokia's navigation apps will feature, too.

More importantly, the phones take people to Microsoft's cloud, not Google's. Indeed, it seems Nokia is distancing itself from Google as much as possible with these Android devices, and Elop went as far as saying that the "Nokia X together with Lumia represents a deliberate strategy to leverage Microsoft services." There will, though, be plenty—"hundreds of thousands at launch," apparently—of conventional Android apps available through a Nokia-specific app store.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the UI of the X range looks like a blend of Windows Phone and Android: there's a glance screen just like the company's Windows Phone models, and colorful tile-like home screen where apps sit in brightly colored bars. But there's the same familiar Android notification bar across the top, and some subtly tweaked folders and widgets that mirror Google's OS, too.

Interestingly, despite the Microsoft focus, you will be able to sideload apps—including those made by Google, in fact, any APK—though some may, apparently, need recompiling to run properly on Nokia's forked version of the OS.

Price, you ask? Well, Steve Elop was keen to point out that the X range is designed to be more affordable than the Lumia range, both now and in the the future. The phone will be "broadly available globally", starting in growth markets, and they'll cost $125 for the X, $135 for the X+, and $150 for the XL.

They're certainly cheap, then. But with no description of the guts lurking within these phones just yet, it's hard to say whether that represents good value or not. Let's wait and see when we get our hands on one.[IMG]

I would think they would do that btw..
Microsoft owns Nokia. Don't think they will give in to Google.

But still the phone is damn lovely. For someone who wants mid-range phone. Not bad of a choice.

initial reaction... i thought it was size of clothing... X, XL... :S

anyway, its a good start and good price too. distancing from Google might be a good idea since I'm beginning to get worried about privacy thingy -- with the NSA spying, etc. not that i have anything to hide, but still...

as it is, i already starting to abandon Google Drive and use MEGA. storage also more -- free 50GB.

back to topic... when this NSA thingy exploded, i think it was Ms who first said they will also have server/ storage outside USA to avoid this 'spying' controversy. so again... good idea to move away a bit from Google.

i believe earlier rumours already mentioned that this phone will be use forked android and will probably not come with GApps. after all, these days, Google is kinda strict on apps that ships with GApps.

but like others have said... should be easy to install GApps.

Seems very possible since it's Android. The thing that still won't make it good is it is not high-end.
I would switch from my Nokia 1020 WP to a Nokia 1020 Android version.

Very very strange. It feels more like a way for Microsoft to promote WP.
You want high-end..switch to WP. Unless they release a high-end version.
But my doubts are high that they will never do so, lets see how the sales goes.

well, we dun really know what else was leaked and exposed... but ya, for average ppl like most of us, should be no big deal... but still... the thought that our stuffs could be on wikileaks... not fun.

yes, company need to earn, so they go via advertising. the thing then is... many are then using ad blockers -- denying the company of $.

again, its no big deal... for now anyway.

Full specs of Nokia XL are online a Nokia Developer website:

http://developer.nokia.com/devices/device-...ations/nokia-xl

1. Confirm Android 4.1 version
2. SoC is Qualcomm SnapDragon MSM8225 which is dual core 1.0GHz based on 45nm - very old - used to have that on my Sony Ericson Xperia Mini series

Suddenly don't feel interest anymore cause of low spec (RAM and storage as well) and older version of Android...

I told you guys already just hear what Nokia CEOhave to say going the Android route. Check the video.
http://www.engadget.com/2014/02/24/nokia-x-elop/

Summary for those don't wanna see the video.
- Nokia using Android as a feeder system for the Windows Phone.
- Elop CEO says it is introductory phone for Android users to get the feel of WP with the Android tiles.
- They will use Android to push for more users to have the full experience by upgrading to the Lumia.
- Nokia/Microsoft have no connection with Google at all regarding this phone.

I think I will get one XL as a testing and play around.
For Real business, will get when it decide to have a flagship model
PureView + ARMOLED.

Since I am using Windows Phone, This UI is fine and this is just android with "Microsoft Service" instead of "Google Service" . Well it will be easy for me to just load in my Microsoft Account Contact and no longer need to import and export between Google .

After so many years even microsoft cant get their WP right so especially these conflict between microsoft and google service will take forever. I will get a Nokia Android when they have pureview as 2nd phone and not first.

SoyaCincau very bad comments about the XL model :

The Nokia X experience is neither here nor there. It is as if Dr. Frankenstein put together bits of Android and pieces of pseudo Lumia to create an abomination. Yes, that’s how bad it is. The home screen is a mess. You have a mixture of icons that look like you’re using Windows Phone but on the same home screen you see third-party app icons that look third rate. It is painful to use.

Speaking of apps, with the Nokia X, you can’t access the Google Play store and along with it the millions of apps available, instead Nokia has created a specific app store for the Nokia X platform. Most of the apps in the store are direct ports form Google but with a key difference — the apps use Nokia’s API instead of Google. So if an app needs to use maps to track your location, it will do so using Nokia’s Here Maps instead of Google Maps. So while the Nokia X devices use Android, not all Android apps are compatible with the devices, developers will have to tweak the API first before it can be used with the Nokia.

The navigation is no better either. You don’t get a home button instead you navigate with just one back button that take you to different places depending on where you are in the interface — sometimes it takes you back one screen, sometimes it takes you to the home screen, other times it will just loop you around and around screen after screen after screen. You don’t know exactly where you are when using the Nokia X.

And there’s the overall performance. In a nutshell, it’s slow and it’s laggy but then again what do you expect from a dual-core 1GHz processor with less that 1GB of RAM and only 4GB of on-board storage. Nokia says there’s a reason for the mediocre hardware. In Nokia’s grand scheme of things, the Nokia X is created for emerging markets, a way to make cheap devices for users who wan’t all the features of a smartphone at the price of a feature phone. But even when compared to other cheap smartphones the Nokia X falls flat.

The cheapest Nokia X is expected to sell for RM400, that’s dirt cheap for a smartphone but consider this, the Xiaomi Redmi with its 4.7-inch 720p Gorilla Glass 2 display, its quad-core 1.5GHz processor, 1GB RAM and 8MP main camera runs Android 4.2 and retails for less than RM450. How would you then justify buying a Nokia X when there are better cheaper Android devices in the market? The answer is obvious isn’t it — you don’t.

After so much hype, this is not the Android that you’re looking for.

With the price control between sub 1000.

Nokia X is good to be a starter phone.

Anyway Microsoft Service is the selling point.

but some of microsoft/nokia service is better than google like GPS/mail. Apps i think wont be too much different since microsoft said will cover about 70% of google play apps(filtered i guess). Myself is lumia 1520 user, sometimes just feel frustrated with windows store apps because some of them really sux . Other than that, i'm feel good with it.

Won't work la nokia famous for launching and killing it later

Look what happen to symbian, meego and if you look at nokia X the UI looks like windows phone but the quality it's bad.

If They don't use Google play they will die because developer will always update and put their apps to the store with popular demand first or traffic. For Low end it's okay

My opinion I suggest u don't wait even their windows phone until to date so much issue do you think they can do a good job on another OS

No doubt the waze is better, but right now i think we are comparing services provided by microsoft/nokia and google, so 3rd party apps is out.
Windows waze still buggy when i use last time, battery still draining alot, recently it got new update but haven try it yet.

From the beginning i just mention some of the services from microsoft is better compare to google.(Maybe i should add on "in my point of view")
I didnt do the comparison based on OS entirely, just "SERVICES".If you saying bout overall usage, really depends on user themself.
I didnt die die using the services because of lumia 1520 as my primary phone, sometimes i still using my galaxy nexus for waze, games and some function on apps that windows phone cant do even though both have same apps. For example Wechat, android Wechat can share music/video embedded but windows cant.
As what i mention early, sometimes i do frustrated with windows apps ,both OS have their pros and cons.

I'd consider a Nokia X for RM400 - just to play around and for a cheap mp3/GPS/waze machine for running/driving.

If they do, they literally kill their onw baby the WP os....just think about it, if there is android high spec nokia phone, whos gonna buy the wp line...just just forget about flagship android nokia phone...the best you can get was this nokia x, forever gonna be mid low end nokia android phone...just my 2cent..

Not necessary nokia have one thing every user been wishing forever its their camera performance.

Every manufacturer as of today have tons of awesome imaging names but non of them output as good as nokia with Carl zeiss.

They also have the best offline navigation it's also another key feature in mobile phone today.

For Windows phone to become popular it will take a very long time because most developer thinks wp is minority.

The only part they fail is marketing and making wise decision.
If u see nokia time line they very in consistence making wise decision most of their decision make nokia lose money.

If nokia decides to use back play store, with 41mp Carl zeiss I bet many from other brands will get it nokia android.

Nokia have never learn their lesson until today fix the OS properly then focus on other things but while leaving wp in bugs and problems they focus on something else like android nokia.

I have no doubt nokia camera with carl optic is superior than any other cameraphone, but nowdays most highend flagship phone can deliver quite decent photo already...majority of ppl prefer android or ios over carl ziess...most ppl mindset if wanna a get a better photo quality then they should get a proper dslr camera...the problem now is wp...which i dont think microsoft gonna let nokia built an android flagship...that surely gonna kill their wp line, if can get flagship nokia hardware carl ziess with android, why would anybody get the wp ver instead...so its safe to say nokia wont make a flagship android phone...best we can get is this X which was middle end spec...

*
Other manufacturer i agree but for Nokia maybe not they have let 2 OSes to die symbian and meego and remember this two OS was nokia flag ship. It also wont be a surprise if they let WP die as well out of sudden.

Maybe they are just testing out WP and later find out its better just to hook on android just have your finger crossed

I'd consider a Nokia X for RM400 - just to play around and for a cheap mp3/GPS/waze machine for running/driving.

need to test the nokia X before consider to buy XL. Prefer bigger screen size.

Look for the 1Mobile Store app in Nokia X's app store and install it. Through that, you can easily install most android apps such as Nova / Apex launcher without sideloading apks. Some of you might have heard of the 1Mobile app store because it is also the default app store in Bluestack's Android emulator software for PC.

I think for full time Android user who purchases apps from Google Play, this phone is so undesirable. Not sure why Nokia even attempting it without Google services.

fiddle with the Nokia X today... wasn't expecting something too good but indeed not bad at all for the selling price... where from directd, you can get ori avaxx set at RM349!

can see all the necessary social media apps can be installed but how about others as still, it will not comes with Google Play Store... but overall, for this price with such body built, it is alot more better than good... for other makes at this pricing, their plastic are much cheapo...

These days even nokia u drop face down there high possibility for the screen to crack and when it drop on its back it's actually useless because the dents and scar on the phone will be heartache . If nokia phones drop 100 times also not even a scratch then good but these days you buy good plastic casing even drop not much damage if spoil just change it.

Just dislike how nokia manage everything is lab rat see what happen to maemo and meego then symbian and now what do u expect from an Android?

Common issues from few days using it, lag and sometimes hang when playing some games, have to remove the battery to restart it. No play Store and not much apps and games can be found in Nokia x "store". But you can root and install gapps to have few of google apps.

u go try it and let us know. If dual core and 512mb ram is enough to play high end games then what the point of other manufacturer have quad and octa core with 2GB and 3GB ram. No point to have kit kat all should use jelly bean.

Get what i mean nokia is the secret weapon of android?

Because Nokia X using Qualcomm SoC is based on 45nm technology, which is quite old. When they are running at full power (ie. games), the battery drain is very fast...

Cool!
Hv you notice any differences in performance?
Is battery heating problem or fast draining problem solved?
I read in the nokia forum that whatsapp doesn't work after the update, did you encounter that?

Hope to hear from you. Tks

I dont always use 300 ringgit phone, but I bought this one and really am not happy with its performance. Lag like nobodys bussiness. Used 1 week fast fast let go already .For those that dont root and just use the phone as is , look somewhere else. This is not the phone you r looking for. Maybe X+ or XL . If nokia is hoping people will upgrade to a better windows phone uafter using this. They can keep hoping.

Customers will Fast fast go back to google android like I did.

I don't know about anyone else, but i agree with you, if you people want to buy a "phone" better stay from this phone, there a lots choices out there for that purposes. maybe X+ and XL will not give you even better experience if you buy it. for me, i bought it because i wanna try Nokia "android". for rm399, not so much to loose than trying phone with rm2k tag biggrin.gif

Actually with 1gig Dual core and 512mb of ram. It was not surprusing that it lags.Afterall it is not a iphone 4.
The 1mobile appstore have all the apps you would need but I guess a few of them have ads and a lot of popups after installation.

Buy to try out and experiment is ok lah. Too small the screen to make gaming meaningful. Personal opinion only ya.

No point for ppl to compare a rm349 phone with more expensive phones when it comes to spec or performance....maybe can compare with the yet to launch rm299 asus zenphone 4 in the future.
If you want a phone for gaming then be prepared to pay more.
The built of nokia x is really solid. The screen is nice. Speaker is loud. Phone call is clear. Camera is not bad, of course, don't mind if it is better.
Battery is ok...just don't play too much of angry birds.
No problem with most popular apps.
Most importantly:
Really like the idea of not being track by google.

I am curious...so do you usually use phones that are more expensive than rm300 or cheaper than rm300?
If you usually use phone that are cheaper than rm300 and they perform better than nokia x, pls share with me which brand and model because I want to save some money. Tks

NOKIA MALAYSIA AND STOREKINI WILL REWARD THE LOWYAT.NET NOKIA X COMMUNITY

user posted image

You’ve seen the world’s first Android-based Nokia smartphone, the Nokia X, and are intrigued by what it can do. This is, after all, a Nokia smartphone running on the open-sourced AOSP – we’ve already seen someone running Nova Launcher on it, and we’re sure there are plenty more tinkering done beyond that from others.

Want to be a part of it? You’re in luck, because Nokia Malaysia is giving away four units of the Nokia X to the Lowyat.NET forum community.

The Nokia X, launched in Malaysia last month for RM399, is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual-core 1GHz processor with 512MB of RAM, and sports a 4-inch 480 x 800 display, There’s 4GB of internal storage, while the Nokia X also supports up to 32GB microSD cards. As for the camera, the dual-SIM device packs a 3MP fixed-focus sensor.
Of course, the most interesting aspect would be its software: the Nokia X runs on a version of Android based on the Android Open Sourced Project (AOSP), while its UI is heavily influenced from Windows Phone and the Asha Platform’s Fastlane UI. The Nokia X Platform – as the operating system is called – has its own app store too, though savvy users can install other third-party Android app stores.

Want to win one of these devices for yourself? Nokia Malaysia has collaborated with Storekini to give away four units of the Nokia X to deserving forum members. They will be selecting one winner per week based on entries submitted on the Nokia X thread, where Nokia representatives will be choosing the best entry for the week to win one unit of the Nokia X. This giveaway will commence from this week for the next four weeks, and a Storekini representative will also be on hand to respond to queries on the thread itself.

How to win? Share, discuss, talk, give idea, technical, non-technical, everything about the Nokia X gives you a chance to win! Even asking a question puts you in the running to win!

So, ready to contribute to the community and be in the running to win the Nokia X? Here's the Nokia X thread where it all happens!

For those who want for another backup phone, this is a good choice. In fact, i have used this as my main phone instead. Some say, this is a basic smartphone for newbie who wants something simple...but i think it is so sophisticated and can cater all your needs of having the full function of a smartphone. Try it and you will know what i mean....

There is no Google Store in Nokia x
What u get is Nokia Store where u can download most of the porpular apps which can be found in google store
Nokia stated that 75% of android apps are compatible to Nokia X
Nokia X software platform is based on Android Open Source Project v4.1.2

actually 512mb ram is sufficient to run most of the app. No noticeable lag thus far...only thing is when you close an app, a message will pop up saying wait a moment....somehow, this will take 2 secs by most. Nevertheless, this only flaw will be solved in next update of rom when it is available... icon_rolleyes.gif

There's no play store support in nokia x. However, you may buy or download free app via nokia store. Most of the apps are there. Oh yea, in case you want to download whatsapp app, you may do these steps:

1. First, launch nokia store
2. Search for "1 mobile market"
3. Download and install the app
4. Open the 1 mobile market app
5. Search for "whatsapp messenger"
6. Download and install it.
7. Done.

They gave me free EA Games but I have to download it from the online store within 40 days. The icon of the games are awesome but the games are... Makes me feels like playing my Nokia 7230 games but with a touch screen.

However sometimes when I play the games I will remind of playing games that caused me spending hours on phone once upon a time haha. Some apps such as Whatsapp do crash after using some time.

May I know are the apps for this phone limited? Because I realize that the number of apps in Nokia Store of my Asha are quite limited.

You have to talk and discuss what you think about the phone.

I think you should get your hands on one first to think and talk about the phone, which most of the folks who owns one knows better than those who has "play" one.

Bought a Nokia X for my Uncle who was back from Australia for Ching Ming. He was please and surprised that Nokia have Android based phone.

There are so many apps which I side load into it for him. While, he was surprised that even such cheap price, there was no compromise in quality. The grip as good on our hand, sturdy and solid. The screen was no big deal. It's not as bright when under sunlight, but hey, who want to stand so long under the sun. Battery was fantastically good. With single SIM, it last him whole day. I checked the screen on time lasted him 3 hours with 3G only. This is what I got with my NOTE 2. OMG....

I really want to have one of this phone for myself. Hope Nokia would give away one for me.

i dont think so.
There's no play store support in nokia x. However, you may buy or download free app via nokia store. Most of the apps are there. Oh yea, in case you want to download whatsapp app, you may do these steps:

1. First, launch nokia store
2. Search for "1 mobile market"
3. Download and install the app
4. Open the 1 mobile market app
5. Search for "whatsapp messenger"
6. Download and install it.
7. Done.
*
The easiest way was to side load the APK. Go to www.whatsapp.com/android/‎ from the phone browser.
Download the apk. Install from Download folder. DONE.

Nokia phones have always been good with battery life. Remember the 3210 and 3310 era? laugh.gif .

Hopefully this is a step well taken by them try to dig into the android cake. Its been late, and time will prove if they can make it or break it laugh.gif

About my previous question regarding apps, does the Facebook app in Nokia X follows Android UI or Asha UI?

Does Nokia X comes with gorilla glass or anti scratch screen etc?

An excellent phone to consider as additional phone for my backup line. Also, I am always Nokia Fan but no option for me to buy a Nokia Android previuosly. Now it is the time for Nokia Return.

You need to root but again your warranty will be void...both nokia store and 1 mobile market are sufficient for apps experience...then why bother must have play store? is such dispensable.... nod.gif

CM10 (Android 4.1.2) bringup is ongoing [1] [2]. CM dev say 4.2.2 is the last Android version supported on this hardware (probably means the SoC) [3], but speculates an unofficial kitkat build is possible [4].

TL;DR: Probably no official KitKat from Nokia, possible from CM.

Actually the purpose of Nokia X with the Modern interface is to let users familiarize with Modern interface of Windows Phone and also let users use Microsoft services like OneDrive with hope that when users have more money, they will jump ship to Nokia Lumia, which have the same interface and services but only diff OS in behind...

It depends on what kind of users are you and how desperate you are...
If you are just a casual users, not really playing any hardcore graphic games, and really desperate already, then why not just go with Nokia X?

But...if you can wait some more, now the diff price is just about RM 30++ based on the price mention in dollar converted to RM, then just wait a bit more ba...

But this phone will really suitable for those who are just change from dumbphones to smartphones...With simple, clean and easy to use UI, users will have no probs start to use them as usual...App store wise, well the sell person will need to help setup app store, install some essentials apps...But after that is a breeze already..

Nokia X,XL and X+ are suitable for entry level Android user who is Nokia supporter. So far, Nokia still keep it's characteristic - solid feel and moderate quality for budget phone. The Nokia Android phones are selling in a reasonable price with Qualcomm chipset in case of compare with other brands (Alca, Hua, Leno, Nine, CXL) are using Mediatek chipset still selling RM300++. From my own survey, Mediatek chipset are weak GPS, weak wifi signal and weak output sound. Very lucky, Nokia chosen Qualcomm chipset as phone motherboard. On GPU side, all these 3 phones are using Adreno 203, suppose the maximum support resolution is 480 X 854 pixels, but Nokia used 480 X 800 pixels to keep the smoothness of UI interface. The LCD has IPS but lack of scratch protection likes Corning Gorrila glass. Understand that the reason of budget and normally budget phone not using this kind of glass. Even the Sam Gran Two also did not have. Not forget to mention CPU is Dual-core 1 GHz Cortex-A5. Although the Cortex-A5 structure is for lower performance device but very battery saving. Nokia packed Li-Ion battery with capacity 2000mAh (Nokia XL) is more than the suitable because the latest Ifone just packed with 1560mAh capacity battery. The physical spec wrote Nokia X has 512MB RAM, but the actual usable RAM is 381MB because some MB of RAM is used to be VM and Cache. The 381MB RAM can running a Facebook app and Whatapps in background is the bottleneck. Some of the Leno Android budget phone (A3X9i) is lack of GPS, at least these Nokia Android budget phone has GPS with A-GPS support. Overall, the desgin, features and performance are tally with the price tag.

Not desperate to change yet.
I'm just looking for a low end phone that is more fluid then my current one.
I'm not really into a higher end, since I don't use much features except socializing.

If price different ain't much and it is more fluid.
X+ seem like a better choice.

I want to share one essential tip on how to import google contacts to nokia x.

1. log in gmail
2. go to contacts
3. Select all contacts, click export
4. Save the .csv into desktop
5. Transfer the .csv file to your internal storage.
6. On nokia x, go to people
7. Drag from bottom screen to up to call up menu
8. Select import/export
9. Select import from storage
10. Point to the .csv you just saved in the internal storage.
11. Wait and all contacts will be saved
12. Done.

Feel free to pm me if you unsure and need further clarification. Sharing is loving thumbup.gif

I personally like this Nokia X because it has 2 Sim slot which allow us to put in 2 Sim cards in a phone. It allow me to travel to other country with other sim card slot in & still able to use the original sim card from my own country.

Besides that, Nokia X runs on a version of Android based on the Android Open Project but still its UI origin from the Windows Phone. It gives me conveniences to install the APK files to enjoy FREE apps & also allow me to use it like windows phone with app store.

But one thing I am not sure is, how can I win 1 Nokia X from this thread? Haha.. I wish I could share more ideas when I get to try this phone on hand. From there, I can share more of my view. =)

One of the advantages of the newly announced Nokia X, Nokia X+, and Nokia XL running on Android rather than Microsoft’s Windows Phone is the potential for customisation.

Whereas you have to stick with the default Windows Phone keyboard, Android users have a wide selection of alternatives to choose from. SwiftKey is one of the best and most popular of those alternatives.

Of course, the Nokia X won’t have access to the Google Play Store, where SwiftKey currently lives. But SwiftKey’s availability on the new budget phones has already been confirmed by the company.

The advantage of SwiftKey over a number of its rivals is the way it learns your typing style, then begins to predict the words you want to type next. It also possesses a Swype-like system whereby you can type in a flowing, continuous manner without lifting your finger from the screen.

It seems the the SwiftKey for Nokia X app will also include SwiftKey Cloud, which lets you backup typing profile and modifies it each morning with whatever’s hot on Twitter.

The keyboard app will be free when it hits the Nokia Store, which is Nokia’s new custom app store.

Of course, we’re interested to see how Nokia has fared with its own default keyboard for the Nokia X range. If that’s decent, we might not even need to download SwiftKey.

The best and most important point of having a Nokia X is that you are NOT being tracked by Google. This new platform is a way to enjoy android apps without having google snooping around.

more important things is no gapps , which is normally run on background process of android for low ram device sure super laggy (aigopad m60) my experience.. nokia x its like kindle fire android without gapss..

last but not least nokia show people that gapss make android laggy..not low ram .. smile.gif

I believe that Nokia X OS itself is more than enough for daily use..

if you are on 10.0.3, u can always unroot it. But if 11.1.1, perhaps you need to reflash the firmware again via nokia suite care. I dont think is traceable. smile.gif

If reflash with stock firmware all be wipe clean and everything like new. No trace of rooted left, just wondering if nokia have something installed in the phone hidden to trace rooted.

My first review on new firmware 11.1.1, the UI is very smooth compared to 10.0.3, icon color customization, improved speed, waiting time to return to home screen has been tremendously shorten or immediate. In fact, im typing now using nokia x...very enjoying experience & no one can tell it is a rm3xx phone. It looks elegant & luxury on using it. Get one today for yourself, family members & closed friends. They will be surprised how good is this phone. I humbly recommend it to everyone.

nokia x can cater more than just whatsapp. In fact, the size is just nice and i have no qualms on playing candy crush on it. Some skeptic criticized on the 512mb ram but to be honest, it is more than sufficient to run a ram hunger and 3D intensive games like Asphalt 8. You may want to check out the youtube on nokia x running asphalt 8 which i uploaded days ago.

This is a value for money phone and there is also firmware update via OTA available in certain countries. Malaysia is coming soon. However, if you cant wait, you may update it manually via Nokia Suite Care 5.0. Let me know by pm if you need guidance...go get it bro! thumbup.gif

*
Agreed, plus market share for android is about 50%++ which is substantially higher than windows, iphone and blackberry. This is getting nokia worried. I read about the article regarding this topic..n yes nokia intends for the world to depend less on google apps by introducing their alternative. I just hope windows user doesn't feel betrayed by this. Nokia just a great big company who foresee this opportunity n takes a big risk in introducing nokia x line..

oh gosh...that's great bro. However, i did it last 2 days via manually. If i'm not mistaken, the OTA file is merely 16mb only. I believe your nokia x UI now is getting smoother and performance is also improved...Welcome to 11.1.1! thumbup.gif

In case you want to download whatsapp app, you may do these steps:

QUOTE(danieloo @ Apr 7 2014, 06:03 PM)
The easiest way was to side load the APK. Go to www.whatsapp.com/android/‎ from the phone browser.
Download the apk. Install from Download folder.

Nokia X is an android phone but it is also not truly an android phone at the same time. It is better to consider Nokia X a hybrid of android, windows and asha OS. Nokia X's OS sets it apart from any other android smartphones. The colourful tiles and fast lane is unique. Furthermore, it has a catchy design and attractive back covers. What do you guys think about this phone? Is the X OS better or do you prefer the usual vanilla android?

But the X OS doesn't comes with google apps such as gmail, but you can always sideload apks anytime. Do you think you will use microsoft apps like outlook instead?

I think X OS is better, i've gone through htc's sense which in the end i got bored and download go launcher for my desire.. n i've never had the nerve to buy a lumia until this x line came out at WMC 14. we know s5 n z1 compact is the highlight there but this entry level phone just steal the spot n controversial enough to attract media attention notworthy.gif . for me it is a breakthrough for the regular OS. Dont know why.. just have this exited feeling every time using Nokia X. Know what i mean? Neway, great thread though bro... thumbup.gif

Hope that I will get a Nokia X, I intend to give this Nokia X to my brother who is going to university. He is currently using Nokia 101, a feature phone. I know that Nokia X is a great entry level smartphone for everyday task. That's why I want to get it for my brother. Hope storekini can fulfill my wish too.

My last Nokia was a E71 which was with me for 3 years before I sold it and changed to a Android phone. Now I wish that Nokia Android phones will be the start of a new era of Nokia revival and hope storekini will present a Nokia X to me to be a part of Nokia family again.

What colour would you guys choose for Nokia X? Would you guys choose the colourful, bright, and players colours like red, green or blue to stand out above the rest or would you rather choose a black back cover to match with the front of it which exude a serious and more business-like feel to the phone.

My first handphone is THE Nokia 101 back in 1992. Some of you were not even born yet. It was the first candy bar phone, pocketable and didn't weigh a tonne.

Fast forward 22 years later, I got myself my second Nokia phone. The idea of the X platform attracted me to get this phone. I like the shape and spec is good for the price.

Nokia has kept its quality well.

I'm about to write a little write up to my latest discovery on nokia x being the gps gadget on the road. Well, i activate Here Maps which is found as a defaulted app, then i downloaded the Malaysia map which was 155mb. Best part was you can store all these downloaded files for free and stored in your external memory card. Just go to your settings, click storage memory and choose memory card option. After maps file successfully downloaded, i try to navigate a place, let say solaris dutamas...voila, it then diverted to nokia store to download voice navigation in various languages support. After i chosen English female voice, immediately i hear turn-by-turn voice guidance to either turn left or turn right....All these are free and you may use wifi to download it. It took me 20mins to reach my destination and the best part was, battery consumption is depleted by 8% only from 100% fully charged to 92% when i reach the spot. It was so awesome experience.

Now, this RM3xx gadget has become my main navigation machines and the route is so accurate and i have no qualms finding my way to the next destination.

Red is also striking and nice...well, in fact the 4 colors offered in the market, black, green, red and white has its own unique finishing. The holding experience and touching is kind like solid and you will not find any mediocre made of plastic. I would say, it looks elegant... thumbup.gif

One good thing about Here Maps is that you can download the maps for free for most of the countries in the world. You download the country only when you need it, so it is always the most up to date map you will be getting.

Free and very good!

name it entry level lumia n high end asha. lack in here but advance in there. nokia is quite clear when they said its purpose is to introduce windows like experience for their users. i know its lack of integration with google services is frustrating but nokia x target is really the first-time smartphone buyers. i'm having difficulty with doc reader coz viewing papers is a daily essential. for this price range, lenovos is good to go for.

still trying to be positive with nokia x btw. Just hope n hope nokia will take their android to the next level, high-end level mayb. what do u think?

Really worth the money for under RM400 phone :-

-Nokia drive (love the nav without internet connection, not fancy as waze but can get me to places)

-Double to wake screen (love the feature, paired with this Screen Off & Lock no need to use power button anymore)

-Pretty decent can handle time killing simplistic android game

So kudos Nokia for bringing this phone.

Nokia X is really an affordable smartphone packed with lots of feature. But it is not perfect in every aspect. I would like to list out the pros and cons of this device.
Pros
- cheap at RM399.
- great design inspired from lumia and asha series.
- exchangable back cover to suit every one's preferences.
- preloaded with awesome Nokia services such as Here Maps and Nokia MixRadio.
- battery life that last a full day with moderate use.
- fairly large 4 inch screen (same as iPhone 5/5s. A decent PPI of 233
- Double tap to wake and glance screen ( This is a very COOL feature that only high end lumia phones used to have, though asha series have them too)
- It is an 'android phone'. XD. Meaning there are tons of apps waiting for you to download.
- Fastlane ( a unique home screen which show your activities in the past, present and future)
- Has microSD card slot
- Nokia X operating system (depends on a person's preference, might be considered as con)

Cons
- only 512 MB of ram, means that the OS might be sluggish if running some heavy task.
- only 4gb of internal storage.
- no front facing camera, rear camera is only fixed focused 3.15MP. But at this price point, it is great to have a camera.
- For android fans, there are no play store or google apps, you have to sideload them somehow.
- No gorilla glass or scratch resistant glass for the screen. I mean like even the asha 503 has it, so why not?
- Nokia X operating system (depends on a person's preference, might be considered as pro)

There u go guys. Please give out your thoughts.

Actually 512mb ram is sufficient to play most games found in nokia store. In fact, asphalt 8 runs without noticeable lag on nokia x. Look here

Regarding 4gb, i have many games and apps installed and yet i still have storage for more...
Camera is considered decent for its pricing.
Playstore is available if you know how....

Basically the cons are not the weakness, you just need to explore further or own this gadget in order to get what i mean here. Try it and you will know... thumbup.gif

Knock to wake has a limitation. Keeps waking whilst in your pocket. Mine woke started making calls, and turning on music by itself while in my pocket. This feature also can be considered a failed feature.

Wow! Asphalt 8 runs great on Nokia X. I will surely try it out if I have a Nokia X. Regarding the internal memory, I believe only about 2.3 GB is accessible. For someone like me who watch videos and listen to music, a microSD card is a must. Lol.

Its not the same as the one from play store, the asphalt 8 on nokia "store" are optimized for nokia only, the one from play store can't be install to nokia x because of the file size.

Actually 512mb ram is sufficient to play most games found in nokia store. In fact, asphalt 8 runs without noticeable lag on nokia x.

Btw, I'm try running Farm Heroes Saga but it seem load forever. My device still not root or use any custom rom. Any thought?

Agreed with u. Basically its the same with other smartphone. used to follow xperia's forum on technicality, any lacks on the phone (especially compared to samsung) always being covered by other alternatives. That doesn't mean cheap especially when we r talking bout high end one.

zenfone 4 is a lot more than i thought. if u depends a lot on google services, sticks with it. at least nokia x's battery is removable (with more capacity) n we know since before smartphone how good nokia's cell compared to others-quite long lasting. This is if u concern bout battery's life n use your phone quite frequent. Plus, just in case u r bored with typical OS, u r welcome to the family. nod.gif

Ok I tested farm heroes Saga loading without issues. Immediate play after loading for few seconds...that's pretty normal. In fact, I have yet to see any game that fail to load & play in Nokia x.

I've notice a lot of concerns regarding nokia x lagging. what can u say when theres no back up by heavy gpu, there might be lag here n there. Some say they have prob with keyboard lagging, others say while playing hd games n closing apps but so far so good coz it only lags a little. Some other will definitely buy this phone if theres no lag while playing dead trigger 2, real racing 3 n modern combat 4. Just have to actively manage the phone n dump many apps as possible.

Mom didnt complaint any lag yet but what does she know bout managing apps right. so i think nokia x is still good to go for.

Hi,
Anyone encounter issue of the screen coming alive in yr pocket and accidentally typing or launching apps?

Other issues are:
# the phone rang in pocket and it got answered, strange because the swipe down motion to answer call is not easy to accidentally executed.

# sometimes phone rang once then stopped but when you looked at the screen the call was still going on.

Note: I hv the double tap screen thingy off.

Wow! Still using the Nokia X in the midnight (00:30)? By the way, I really like the FastLane feature, I hate that sometimes I will accidentally clear the notification on my Android device, but with FastLane this problem won't happened easily. And yea, I like Nokia X because it is more stable and won't be as lag as my Sony Xperia go, as well as larger screen with higher resolution than my Xperia go.

This is the common problem on Lumia handset too, just put your handset face the screen outside.

Knock to wake has a limitation. Keeps waking whilst in your pocket. Mine woke started making calls, and turning on music by itself while in my pocket.

theres another one from gsm -- when phone is locked, screen blinks automatically n keys get started hitting, then i tried wid password, but d lock keys gets pressed, even a call gets answered on its own, n u dont even know about it when its in pocket --

i've not yet encounter this prob but wannna discuss, r these probs possibly because we've switch on the double tap screen option once? bcoz i see the way to prevent it is that we should have not switch on the option in the first place.. what u guys think

It lags alright. It is not a high end product. The interface does have the resemblance, but the reaction time not much though much better than similarly priced android devices out there.

I personally wouldn't recommend it to someone coming from the Lumia family. If youre looking for a backup phone, just stick to the Lumia family.

But if you're trying to recommend people to the Nokia brand, yes it is a good choice. It offers the most bangs for the bucks.

As far as the app is concerned, you can download a third party app market which is available in the Nokia store, and look for the apps there, if it is not available in the Nokia store. Or just Bing the apk.

It just few points below Samsung Galaxy S2 which costs thousand over. Worth testing it.

The AnTuTu benchmarking is quite promisn.

Samsung S2 seems to start lagging since it does not have any updates.

This phone can be a good replacement.

It seems creepy. Have you contacted the Nokia customer service?

You can try contacting them:

https://www.facebook.com/NokiaMalaysia/app_...87755206?flyingspaghettimonster=ts

Sent them a direct message at Facebook: Nokia Facebook

They seem quite friendly if compared to others. Have a try.

yes it will work. in fact, nokia x is a real android system base. You may download most of the apps from its nokia store or sub store which is 1 Mobile Market which is subsequently available in nokia store. Not to be worry as nokia x is as good as any android smartphone. Go get one and try it yourself. You will be surprised how good it is when you have it on your hand. icon_rolleyes.gif

ok guys, i will do a review on custom rom available for nokia x. Well, i have tried three custom rom which were Lewa OS, Cynogen CM10 and Android Vanilla AOSP. Eventually i found they were not stable at the moment. There were just too many bugs for daily use...Therefore, i will advise user not to flash custom rom and stick with stock rom which is latest firmware 11.1.1. The stock rom is stable and sufficient to cater all your daily needs.

That's all from me and i shall recommend to everyone when custom rom becomes stable later. For now, i'm very satisfied with stock firmware and the unique of Windows UI. Fast, smooth and very responsive. rclxms.gif

it'll work alright. Its just that nokia suggest/prefer users to download straight from nokia store coz they wont be responsible for any third parties. However the good news is, nokias getting active in increasing the num of adroid apps on nokia x family by inviting developers to join their store. So in the future we may not've to install .apk much. hope so.

the same goes for my bb z10, although can install apk but call function, emoticons, background etc are not functioning properly...
*
its still pure android without "google apps", if the cpu and ram can handle the apps, should be no problem installing any apps for android.

QUOTE(chidori @ Apr 15 2014, 01:39 PM)
thanks for sharing. may i know what is the bug? actually i'm thinking to buy nokia x and try android vanilla or cm10.

call function no working properly so far.

for cm10, there was a bootloop problem. it just cant access into it. For vanilla, once you reboot the 2nd time, you will be hang at the nokia screen for no reason...Stay away from both until the developer stabilized it... nod.gif

ok guys, i will do a review on custom rom available for nokia x.
Fast, smooth and very responsive. rclxms.gif
*
so they're not stable yet. thnks for the info though. smile.gif n i heard (for those who want google apps on nokia x) its more simple to root nokia x n install google play store when it is running version 10.0.3 rather than updating the phone to software version 11.1.1. your pc will require KingoRoot app if u're on 11.1.1

QUOTE(syd04 @ Apr 15 2014, 01:05 PM)
Confirmed!
My phone self-answers my phone calls when it is in my pocket.
Is it a bug?
Or something to do with the sensor?

i think its the sensor

I haven't got the time to go to Nokia service center today.
So, I am experimenting....I taped the sensor and so far no problem, two calls came in. But with the sensor taped, the screen goes blank if I didn't answer fast enough.
Will try for tomorrow also and will update you all.

I cannot tahan and tried again. I used my friend's phone to call myself.

It is not the sensor. With sensor taped, calls still got answered.

I tried with phone in pocket....

Action: not moving at all.
Result: phone continued ringing.
Concluson: no problem.

Action: move slightly and slowly
Result: phone calls answered or rejected, eventually
Conclusion: the swipe motion to reject or answer is too sensitive.

Action: walking normal speed
Result: phone calls answered or rejected almost as soon as I hear the ring
Conclusion: something is really wrong with the phone.

Then syd04, my friend u hve to make a visit to nokia care. tell them from a to z what happened with ur phone, evry single thing. u will find the personnel typed back ur complaint exactly what've been told. I find this funny coz my complaint area is very long on the receipt when i visited them. Mobile Technic Sdn Bhd that is.

i dont think its bcoz u mishandled the phone coz theres user in india facing the same prob

I have nothing much to add to this thread for the entry to the Nokia/Storekini contest so I'll just say this:
My hats are off to Nokia for creating a true entry level device for the masses who are just having a grasp on the world of smartphone technologies and also realizing the dream of the fans of Nokia for having an Android based device. I really do see a bright future ahead for the X line of Nokia product so I wish them all the best.

I went to the Nokia Care in Amcorp, PJ this afternoon.

Issue: Phone calls got answered in pocket

I demo for them to see. The customer service girl called my phone using their land line and I walked around and call got answered in my pocket.

Then I showed her what Nokia Malaysia advised to do...go to setting > security > lock screen, and look for the non-existent Slide option.

She went into the back office and came out with a Nokia X phone. She went thru the Setting > security........... and cannot find "Slide" option too.

Next she set Pin on my phone to see if it can help. After setting the Pin, phone call got answered in my pocket too and later found out that the Pin thingy doesn't work when phone call comes in (whether in pocket or not). Meaning, it doesn't lock the screen when calls come in. What you see is the same "Swipe up to reject" or "swipe down to answer" screen.

Then she went in with both phones to talk to the technician. Ten minutes later, she came out and told me that their phone too has the same problem but not as sensitive as mine. Theirs needed a bit more movement.

She told me that they have no solution now and they will escalate this issue to Nokia. I left my number with her to call me back when she gets an answer from them (Nokia).

This is very frustrating. Whenever a call comes in, I need to scramble to get my phone out of my pocket asap.

The only solution I can think of meanwhile is to get a case with a flip cover. I feel that I am forced to spend extra money to get a case in order for my phone to work properly. And I don't like having the extra bulk of a case.

Sigh, sigh, sigh.....

My friends think that I should demand for a new set from them since they can't solve my problem. It is clearly a manufacturing defect (screen being too sensitive).

What say you?

I have encountered that too, facebook app got launched and the movement in my pocket typed some jibberish in a chat! Luckily, it wasn't send.

Another occasion, lots of apps got launched....

But this self answering thingy is ultra frustrating as I receive quite a number of calls everyday.
Apart from this issue, I really like this phone.

I hope Nokia Malaysia will do something soon.

It will be such a shame if I have to let this phone go.

thats y i didnt try to forward to them. this thing is out of hand n is a global thing. only nokia finland can give the right solution. but how can they know if theres no one draw their attention. i've been meaning to forward this to the right forum, hoping to get a solution. Just most of them didnt active enough to attract any attention.

demanding for new set--yes u should refer to nokia malaysia. me visiting nokia care is solely bcoz of my fault, but its all ok now. manufacturing defect...who knows lucky's on ur side. but hey, any update on this i'm sure all open to hear from u.

I hv raised my problem to Nokia Malaysia on FB. They are very responsive and told me to master reset my phone. I did that and still the same.

They say they will escalate the problem to the relevant department and will call me once they have any news.

I feel very lemah semangat already.

Now I hv to reinstall apps and put everything back in order. Using this phone now is so stressful.

I hope they will replace my phone with a new unit.
