Watch all the drop tests on YouTube and you'll think twice about not getting screen protector.

Even though N5's housing the new Corning Gorilla 3.
Most screens crack on first drop.
In this forum, we already have two victims of cracked screens, both on first drop.
*
Screen protector doesn't protect from drop test, what does mere .1mm of plastic sheet going to do upon drop? People used it to protect from scratch not drop.

The Glass SPs should help a little with protecting the screen.

Every bit counts if you ask me.
I don't like to take chances.

It does. The film stretches the whole screen and minimise the impact by spreading the energy as widely as possible. Certainly, cheap one may not be doing that job really well but I believe any better one should have that covered somehow. Premium one like Rhinoshield tell you that's what they can do!

Looking for some minimalist cases for my incoming Nexus 5. So far the most common mentions are for Ringke and Nillkin? But both look rather underwhelming. In my quest for something just a bit more striking I came across this thread from the xda forums.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2577289

The quicksand covers looks pretty amazing. And it's only $0.99. I think I'm gonna get a few.

Whilst I dont think it's gonna offer serious protection, I'm guessing it would be as good as something like the Ringke Slim case, right?

Found a seller that ships to Malaysia free too.

i never look on this type of casing anymore as it more on fashion then protection. phone fall down and it scratch the side panel of the phone.

They do. It will cost you a 25USD + shipping though.

One thing that held me back is its anti-scratch-ness. I see some scratch marks in some of their videos (or maybe that's just some lighting issue). Sure, polymer-based SP will not be as anti-scratch as the tempered glass one, but if a SP scratches so easily and cost me 25USD to replace, it will be very painful!

They used to cost 20GBP, so now it's cheaper!

But the impact resistance is very tempting, I can't find any impact testing done on other sp such as nillkin or sgp hmm.gif

scratch proof vs crack proof, I'm voting for crack proof anyday thumbup.gif

scratch is $25 to replace, crack is >rm200+ to fix cool2.gif

didn't know such sp existed, might get this when I get my n5

But scratch may occur easily? Like once you meet some metal objects, polymer-based SP will scratch. But cracked screen has other ways to prevent - casing or more careful handling.

Some extra info by users in XDA:
QUOTE
2. Scratch resistance is like normal screen protectors, i.e. not particularly great, and not too bad either. They said it is a necessary trade-off for the impact protection it provides, and it holds some truth.

Just sharing my rusty physics knowledge from college sweat.gif

Basically display screen can be of two type :
elastic ( difficult to crack but easier to bend, for example PDA screen )
tough ( difficult to bend but easier to crack, for example glass )

Most modern smartphone with corning gorilla glass was of tough type. Putting a screen protector that is difficult to crack doesnt exactly able to protect phone's glass below. Those glass type screen protector will have higher chance to protect phone screen/glass, by taking the hit. Good glass also had scatter proof characteristic thus will reduce damage to screen/glass below as well.

Nah, I had no knowledge on Rhino shield. My believe was that I rather gamble on breaking another piece of glass. Generally it was the concept of bullet proof glass, by having multiple glass stack together.

I'm still hunting for what would protect front display of my yet-to-receive nexus 5.
