Sifu Zenix,

Seeking your best advise. My friend wanted to sell his 2003 Mazda 6 (1st generation). It is 1.8cc hatchback model, imported from UK with current mileage at 130K. It is currently under 2nd ownership. Wanted to let go at RM 23K since this model is manual transmission.

Would you think it is a good buy? Anything should I pay attention to?  icon_question.gif

Thank you very much.  notworthy.gif

okay smithers....

for that kinda money and being old so no loan you're going to have to pay cash i don't think it is a good deal, older mazda's parts are hard to come by or not cheap, 130k mileage isn't alot for its age but i don't think it is a superb buy, if you want a manual fun car so little money and won't depreciate anymore (maybe even apreciate) do consider these....

2000 fiat coupe 2.0 turbo - should be in classic car category soon so buy it before it gets that status and it will get expensive, right now its cheap because it is old and cannot be loaned, still will arise some issues getting parts on the cheap or available on the spot (same problems as the mazda) there are specialty workshops that can always get those for you so joining the club would be a good idea......anyway for the same amount of money and problems i'd rather be driving around in an italian sports car than an old japanese sedan.

but end of the day if you're looking for a daily drive, cheap to maintain and reliable you should look for something like 2004 nissan sentra you can still loan it if you want to lower your burden or pay outright cash, though being 10 years old you need to spend abit to refurbish the car abit even the basics like new tires, replace all oils (engine, brakes, etc), replace all filters (engine, aircond), service aircond, etc. would cost at least rm800-1000 depending on what you choose.

2001 proton satria gti is abit of the above two, sports car looks and performance with reliability and cheap parts but the stigma of owning a local brand car.

so....three headaches for you icon_rolleyes.gif

Hi I've been researching on BMW cars especially their E46 but am constantly fearful that if buying a <10 yr old car would probably set me btwn 30-40k.

Due to current credit limit, I am limited with a budget abt 60-70k, would appreciate any current owners and sifu's to give their inputs;

I'm currently considering the following;

http://www.mudah.my/Bmw+e46+b+-29195530.htm

to be used for daily short drive within KL area, with occasional travel outside to Cyberjaya and outstation i.e. JB, Ipoh once or twice in a quarter

i know bmw's are more sporty and exciting but if you're in a budget pinch but want a german luxury mobile you should consider mercedes as parts are cheaper overall compared to with bmw/audi/vw and other conti maybe you can consider something like 2005 merc c200 cheaper to maintain than a bmw but don't expect it to be cheap like a kancil....think camry/accord/teana/mazda6.

one bmw you can also consider about which isn't too old is 2005 bmw 118 it isn't the 3-series but you get almost a similar experience as the model you linked but this one is newer and better since it is one generation newer.

2014 mazda bt50 - you can check if they still clearing stock for their old model, it is a good bargain pickup, as others in this range you only get the low-rider/2wd/manual version which is sad version.

2014 nissan x-gear - at the budget set, you won't be able to get a new c-segment car, this is probably the only car within your budget where you can get x-segment size and engine capacity, you got a roof rack so you can store extra stuff, this version of the livina only has seating for 5 but a larger boot. Only 1600cc engine but powerful enough for its body but don't expect very powerful engine response....just nippy enough to scoot around.

2014 vw polo sedan - isn't a c-segment but almost as spacious as one, it is larger than most toyota vios and honda city. no dsg and turbo, just a normal mpi 1600cc engine (mpi = dvvt/vvti/vtec) and 6 speed automatic slush box, old tech but more durable.

2011 toyota altis 1.8g - a few years of depreciation suddenly makes this car an attractive buy if you would consider a used one, cheap to maintain and repair, 1800cc engine and spacious interior good for long distance drives. A used nissan sylphy would be slightly cheaper but looks more ugly, i think the altis would be a better choice.

Hello sifus, I need some advice on purchasing my first car.

1. Brand: Any, local or not
2. Budget: Maximum of 40k
3. New/Used/Unreg: Used
4. Specs: Not sure what to put here, but I suppose Full or Standard
5. Transmission: Auto, no manual
6. NA or FI: NA
7. Type: Small (like the size of a Viva or Myvi) or Hatchback. I am bad at parking even standard-sized sedans because of a spatial awareness problem.
8. Remarks: I was actually looking at getting a second-hand Satria Neo CPS (high end model) year 2010/2011, but I would like to hear the opinion of the sifus here about that car, or maybe any other kind of car that you would recommend over that one. Generally however, I am looking at getting something reliable and hassle-free for everyday use, and maybe a bit sporty if I ever decide to follow my brother (he is getting a brand new Manual Satria Neo CPS) on trips to Ulu Yam.

Thank you very much.

first off the batt i wouldn't really recommend a viva, since i don't think it has enough safety features, axia is too new i haven't really checked it out so the verdict isn't there yet.

myvi is a safe bet, though you might feel it is a boring one.

neo is a good choice, get the highest spec vs age for the budget you have.

i can't think of anything better coz u want reliable and hassle free.......swift/jazz too expensive/old not a great idea.

myvi is the easy choice. fuel consumption good, looks decent but boring, cheap to maintain, cheap to buy.

jazz power, spec, looks, etc it has everything but it is quite pricey.

swift is decent too but since you say you're in kampung area better not risk it because there might not be a good service center near you, at least honda/perodua is more common.

2009 merc c180 cgi - why not consider a recon unit? it is within your price range, plus you get to buy it with new car interest rates, being a recon not used also the car is in excellent condition, as recon units of this kinda cars the traders usually bring in are show units or fleet cars with very low mileage and few issues. Used units are abit dangerous coz well malaysian style is people don't wanna pay for expensive maintenance only will sell the car.

Or you can go the BMW route 2005 bmw 325 or 2007 bmw 320 both are the same price the differentiation is the age and spec. The choice is yours but if you buy the 2005 bmw 325 it is going to be a keeper as you won't be able to easily sell it once you finish your loan (in 3/5/7 years) because then the car would be too old in the eyes of the banks, yes you can get used units are cheaper price and of course you'll be hit by a huge depreciation since the recon and used car prices is about 10k gap now but then once BMW's depreciate to below 100k they don't depreciate that rapidly anymore. A 325 is a good car and keeping it long term isn't a bad idea as German car makers supply parts until > 20 years the cars life.

2013 suzuki kizashi - there are many 2012/2013 models with huge discounts being sold now (they are still new) this is a good car but there is a few problems with it. The first problem is the badge, suzuki isn't known for making d-segment cars so of course there is a reputation issue. The second problem is the size, it is a compact d-segment meaning it is only slightly bigger than the largest c-segment cars like altis/civic, but then again compact d-segment are usually for more sporty cars like the euro accord so don't think it is bad, the chassis is slightly shorter so it doesn't have big over hangs like the camry so it corners better and handles high speeds better. That is the only problem since this car has a powerful engine and is very very well equipped for 105k it is as well equipped as top end mazda 6 (which is of course better equipped than camry/accord as they're more into affordable volume game than giving great equipment levels and superb package).

i think the new cars from perodua and proton will be a game changer.
more into this era with small cars but not just being cheap, they are practical and with enough safety equipment.
maybe you should wait.

as for right now, the safest and cheap i'd recommend you is a myvi.

wait until year end sales then, 2-3k isn't that much so surely can get discount.
don't bother getting the old model even if they offer with big discount.
depreciation will be high and the gearbox isn't that great that's why it isn't frugal.

if resale is important then BMW or Merc is the way to go, the other German brands don't hold their value.
no need to see if it is recon it is usually unreg, so new car interest rates and can choose number plate.
if already got number plate it cannot be recon and of course used car interest rates really sucks balls.

Currently driving a 9 year old Myvi.
Planning to get a car before the GST implementation.
Unable to decide on a new or used car.

If New Car
1. Brand : Honda City 2014
2. Budget : RM90k
3. New/Used/Unreg : New
4. Specs : V Spec
5. Transmission : Auto
6. NA or FI : NA
7. Type : Sedan
8. Remarks : Too expensive. Slightly above budget. Buying a new car could save some maintenance.

If Used Car
1. Brand : Honda Jazz Hybrid/Honda City/Honda Insight/Toyota Prius C
2. Budget : Below RM75k
3. New/Used/Unreg : Used (2011 and above)
4. Specs : -
5. Transmission : Auto
6. NA or FI : NA
7. Type : -
8. Remarks : Used car will be cheaper upfront but higher interest and maintenance cost.

Undecided on what car should I get.

Hmmm, BMW is a good option as well right?
When it comes to maintenance cost and such, which one will be around that area?
Or should I just get a new car.
Hmm seems interesting though, the links you have shared for me, I got my eye quite on that BMW, but as you said it will depreciate quite fast, until it reached a stable area.

What do you suggest?
