sylphy might be ugly but its cheap to maintain, cheap to buy, not very old.

almera - under power, ugly
forte - it's korean!
insight - good choice, not as spacious as a sylphy
city - for your budget only can get the basic one from the newest range, quite a good car but interior feels cheap.
city - previous gen, high FC

was thinking the same on insight and almera. haha. almera is ugly enough but yet budget + similar to vios. insight i love bcos of power and internal design. but yet on the battery reason make me think twice. any comment on battery?

Saw previous generation E-spec can get around 68-70k. Previous E using disc brake instead compared to current using drum. Better value I guess.  biggrin.gif

every typical malaysian will think:

1. rear drum brakes = lousy
2. CVT = easily broken
3. Hybrid batteries = always kong like Everyready battery
4. Aftermarket sports rims = better than OEM rims

those are myths laugh.gif

1. What is the use of having disc brakes on cars under 2000cc that produce less than 100hp tongue.gif
2. Typical malaysian don't follow service manual schedule or use cheap gearbox oil alternatives then complain, BTW how many CVT's sold vs CVT breakdown?
3. Battery cost have come down alot recently, last time for Gen1 yeah it was rated above RM10k but now it is around 2k-5k max, BTW how many kong vs sold?
4. With the exception of steel rims, the OEM rims on any car is usually better made than the cheapo aftermarket cetak rompak being sold at kedai papan tongue.gif

I'm assuming you do not have much downpayment.

Depending on whether your boxes can fit into a Myvi, that should be your determining factor. If you think that Myvi will give you enough space for your luggage, then go for it. Myvi is more problem free than a Proton Saga but costs more and has less bells and whistles (like CVT, and some of the electronics). And Myvi has the benefit of easy parking in the city.

If you need a bigger trunk space, go for Proton Saga. Go for the FLX version that has CVT and all the other bells and whistle. Parts and serviceability for both cars should not be a problem.

I wouldn't recommend the other 2 cars since they are significantly more expensive and given your uncertain salary, it's best to minimise commitment. Also, I can see that you're on a tight budget, so might as well settle for either a Myvi or Saga.

Btw, if you have help from your family (in terms of time), you can go for a used car. Say, if you car does breakdown, at least you can ask your dad to bring your car to the workshop if you have something urgent to do. But usually those instances will be rare if you buy a well maintained car.

Waja is a decent car. Maintenance should be relatively low in terms of RM, but might more trips to the workshops. However, I don't like the driver's interface. The horizontal legroom is quite limited as the centre casing seems to encroach into the legroom.

You can try to go for a Nissan Sentra or a Toyota Corolla. These 2 should have decent maintenance after the first 2 years of ownership, since you would have replaced most problematic parts. These 2 cars are a lot more comfortable than a Waja for a tall person. If you want to save more, go for a Nissan Sunny (1-kick-start and awesome bumpers for minor accidents). smile.gif

Alternatively, if you have some moolah for extra maintenance, can consider Nissan Cefiro / Toyota Camry. These 2 are of course more comfortable than the above, but costs more for road tax and fuel consumption. And if you are more adventurous, there's the option of Mercedes 190E or Mercedes W124. But I won't recommend Mercs for first time car owners.

All depends on your maintenance budget and how much will you love your car. nod.gif nod.gif

There's the Forte to consider too, though long term maintainance of a kimchi is still questionable. With that budget, why not go for a used car and get a Camry / Accord? These 2 will serve you better for long distance travel imo.

2. Budget : ~90k
3. New/Used/Unreg : New/ used
4. Specs : Average
5. Transmission : Automatic
6. NA or FI : Any
7. Type : 4 seater
8. Remarks : Interested in getting one of the 3 cars listed above. To fit my affordability, the Golf will likely be registered in 2011/2012 and the E90 in 2008/2009 (pre-facelift). I'm concerned about the Golf TSI's issues with its DSG gearbox/ dry clutch system and the possible maintenance costs of driving a 6 year old BMW.

Would it be more sensible to go for a new Honda City instead? What should I realistically expect if I went for the Golf/E90?
