every typical malaysian will think:

1. rear drum brakes = lousy
2. CVT = easily broken
3. Hybrid batteries = always kong like Everyready battery
4. Aftermarket sports rims = better than OEM rims

those are myths  laugh.gif

1. What is the use of having disc brakes on cars under 2000cc that produce less than 100hp  tongue.gif
2. Typical malaysian don't follow service manual schedule or use cheap gearbox oil alternatives then complain, BTW how many CVT's sold vs CVT breakdown?
3. Battery cost have come down alot recently, last time for Gen1 yeah it was rated above RM10k but now it is around 2k-5k max, BTW how many kong vs sold?
4. With the exception of steel rims, the OEM rims on any car is usually better made than the cheapo aftermarket cetak rompak being sold at kedai papan  tongue.gif

Prefacelift Toyota Wish, I've personally seen & negotiated for several units below 60K.

How about maintainance for these type of cars? UMW Toyota SC cannot service those right? If we bought the Livina we'll probably just send to Tan Chong SC
*
Dude, any workshop can service a Toyota, they are not complex cars...even compared to 90's BMW (I own/owned both).

Just get a normal workshop to do servicing, its very simple. Do some homework on where you can find a reliable/trusted workshop near you.

If the budget were to be limited to around RM30k for a car, don't mind if it is 2nd hand or 1st, nor make is important however must be an automatic, would MyVi be the de facto to go to? Thank you!

Consider..

reliable, cheap to maintain, affordable to buy, with basic safety features..modding potential, spare can be had almost every continent in the world; Corolla SEG (AE111).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Corolla_(E110)

Can be had for way less than 30k. You may use of it to spruce up the car, make it more interesting to drive...parts are cheap, both OEM & aftermarket and also abundant.

thanks for the sharing Zenix. also I am wondering - when searching through the internet (eg. carlist, oto), seller always state "100% Accident Free - Guarantee". but how can seller guarantee the used car was never involved in accident beside checking the insurance claim record? that is possible that the car might involved in accident & owner fork out own money to fix it
*
You should never take the sellers word as gospel, not matter what they are selling. You will have to check it physically yourselves. If you dont know how, get someone who does, either a friend or your trusted mechanic.

Does anyone know how much I'll be able to sell a 2007 Honda Civic 1.8S with a mileage of 183,000km.

I'm planning to buy a new car (Mazda) and trade in my current Honda Civic. The second hand car dealer recommended by Mazda offered me quite a low price, so i just want to make sure that I'm not cheated sad.gif

Thanks a lot everyone!
*
How low is low? It is normal for used car to offer lower than market price as they need/want to earn money as well. Small nicks will be magnified as huge damage in their eyes to knock your price down.

That's the cost of getting someone else to do the work for you, unless you do it yourself.

Mind elaborate more on this?

As I know many Toyota owners (including myself) who are driving 1970's till 2000's models but never heard or experience any "break got probs".

Consider first gen Altis, pre-facelifts are +-30k, facelifts slightly higher.

Low maintenance, just gotta watch your engine oil consumption, early 1zzfe issues.

Did you friend own any japanese cars around 15-20yrs old for him to make that statement?

Here's my experience;
I've owned both a 1982 & 1990 corolla both didnt need any repairs which I'd call "high". My 1994 BMW however is a different story. Now with a 2003 Altis.

My advice, you cant go wrong with a decent taken care of SEG. Parts are also abundant & very affordable.

I can input for the Wish. For ease of replacement parts, cost of those parts & reliability. Drove a 1.8 fully loaded (3 adults,2kids + luggage) and surprisingly didn't feel sluggish.

If not for your posting above, I wont knoe that Toyota Altis have the most overall complaint on year 2009 model & the 2002 model on  excessive engine oil usage [ makan minyak engine ].

Thanks for your input. I wont look for either of these models as for now.

Here is some feedback from an actual 1zzfe Altis owner, other than topping up oil every month (about 500ml) is really isn't a big deal. There isn't any smoke from the exhaust, no oil on the spark plugs either. For the price of the car now, you wont find another on par from features to easy of maintenance cost to resale value. Even with oil consumption issues & a leaking intake gasket, RM40 worth of petrol still gets me 200km+ in 100% KL city driving. Look at how many first gen Altis are actually on the road.

As for the remarks on "blindly believe them like it is a religion", it goes both ways. Believing someone else's comments without them actually experiencing it themselves first hand is just ignorance wink.gif

I wanna ask if I want to sell my car and I wanna check the market price that i can sell..
where can i search for it?

Thanks

I suggest Mudah.my, as you can see both dealers & private sellers.

Remember, if your selling to dealers, don't expect market price.

is it worth to pay average price for a car with accident record? or ask the seller lower the price, but the owner seems do not want to sell at reduce price despite accident

I'd look around but seems this car had the best like new condition, just not sure should i pay the normal price for a car with warranty claim record before?
*
Depends on what type of accident & how severe it was.

Also depends on if the seller is desperate, and probably banking on the notion that most people wont know how to identify accident repaired cars.

When car new it had been claim 25k from wv record before

It depends on you, if you are willing to accept the car's history & convinced the repair was done properly..then take the plunge.

Similarly, the buyer might think the same, so he/shel will demand the usual market price instead of "accident damaged" price.

Another thing, no one buys a GTi to scoot around like a Kelisa..so keep that in mind as well wink.gif

I've seen several types of cars (one of which owned by my friend who totalled it) whereby all A,B,C pillars were compromised & yet workshops repair and put that vehicle back on the sale lot..but I digress..

I'd be more useful to provide your actual budget and your criteria(s).

To answer your question, the honda options is much better than a protons u mentioned, IMO.

Hi, you've probably seen this asked quite a bit, though I'd also like to ask some opinions about things as well:

1. Brand : Proton/Honda/Toyota/?
2. Budget : 20k - 37k~
3. New/Used/Unreg : New/Used (preferrably under 10 years)
4. Specs : Sedan
5. Transmission : Preferrably auto, definitely can do manual too
6. Remarks :
My primary use will be to get to work and back. Will need sedan to carry stuff in the trunk ocassionally. Will need to drive from Penang to KL and vice versa maybe once every one or two months. Currently use a nissan Sunny that's close to 30 years old and have some basic knowledge on maintaining cars like self changing engine oil and oil filter(of course, any car if not properly maintained will have issues).
I've been gathering information from friends and colleagues (some conflicting), perhaps some of you experienced folks can help with verifying some of these claims.

Claims:
a) Proton makes decent cars these days. Persona or Saga FLX/BLM or Preve are decent and so far some of the people I know driving them have had no major issues with timing belt, engine, gearbox or any other major components.
b) Proton makes shit cars(yep, conflicting opinions). New Preve had to be sent back even on the first week upon buying. Monthly problems with power windows, lights, door handles..etc etc. One colleague's Wira gave him hell for 7 years.
c) Toyota/Honda have higher resale values because they're very reliable. They don't break down in the middle of the road(or very very rarely).
d) Toyota/Honda cars have expensive parts so most people who need to repair their cars of around 5 to 10 years end up paying premium prices or getting recon parts.
e) You definitely want a new car over any second hand car. Go with Proton/Perodua(sadly, I want a sedan) over any second hand City/Vios.
f) You definitely want a secondhand Toyota/Honda over any new local car.

I'm so confused. Any help please?

For 30k, a first gen altis is probably the best you can do. Good fc, decent interior space, parts are abundant, any workshop can work on them. 40+ u can get the facelift first gen.

A civic es model should also be good, although not many can be seen on the road.

I too have this idea , rm30k for a 2003/2004 1.8G Altis , replacement parts abundant too

However after taking into considerations, why not try Conti for once since its still within my budget of rm30k, I am looking at year 98/99 W202 [ 2.0/2.2/2.5 ] decent ones around rm20k. or BMW e36 year 95/96/97 decent ones around rm20k or maybe BMW E46 year 00/01/02 decent ones up to 35k.

I understand that the upkeep of these Conti might be much higher, but then again YOLO , why so conservative if you can still afford it ?

Btw, I am driving a 1997 Wira manual currently

zenix

Need your advice on this

6 Speed Manual 325
*
Before I got the altis, I had a 94 e36 325 manual. Parts are more expensive but that's normal with any premium product (look at pc parts for example). As with any 20+yr car, other parts needs replacement too. So if u can find a decent e36, and have money set aside for repairs, I'd say go for it.

If it wasent for safety & ease of driving for my wife & to ferry my kids, I would have held on to my bimmer.

Ps; I still have e46 330i caliper & disc, so if u do need this. Let me know lol

Any advice on gettng a used car that is more than 10 years?

1. Brand : Toyota KE70
2. Budget : 20k
3. New/Used/Unreg : Used ( Probably more than 10 years )
4. Specs : Sedan ( 4 door)
5. Transmission : Manual ( hook on manual, get bored wth saga flx sv cvt )
6. Remarks : would like to have this as a daily drive, travel from PG to Autocity daily, and sometime for cruising with manual. any pro/con for getting this used car? the car price is less then 10k, but if include repair and some partial mods, i would sum up around 10-20k. though not sure what mod i would want to get.

thanks

-edit-
and i have not think about maintenance, mind including the cost of maintaining a car like this?
*
On that budget for a KE70, you could buy a decent stock one & restore the body. Plus transplant a blacktop 4AGE plus many many more choice components. If not, look on mudah or the facebook groups. I saw a couple going for 10K+ with fully restored body & 4AGE & some rare parts.

Cons? old car tech no safety features..the usual la.

I also looking for one, but not 20k lol..more like 4k laugh.gif

Guys, buy used Altis 2001-2006, what are the usual car specific problems to check for?
*
If the prefacelift, just make sure to check for engine oil consumption. Look up "1zzfe oil consumption" on google.

Not a big deal, use thicker oil it will slow down, car owners should be regularly do basic inspection of their vehicles anyway. Despite this it, FC is still good, no smoke from exhaust.

My intake manifold is leaking (rough idle) but FC is still great, RM40 worth of fuel gets me ~170KM on 100% KL city driving.

Only downside I can say it looks ungker. Ungker, all day everyday.
