1. No preferred brand.. But am more inclined towards NOT Asus.

2. Budget is around 1800~2000. (can go a bit higher till around 2.3k, but preferably in this range, unless the specs is really too far difference)

3. A little bit of everything - some mild photoshop, mild gaming (mainly dota2, can accept playing in medium graphics), most of the time use for casual surf and watch movies, music, etc. Sometimes also need to do some simulation (am a chemical engineering student ~.~).

4. Prefer small dimension-ed laptops (13" the best), and as light as possible because I will be buying a new monitor (any recommendation too?) And if possible Haswell core (can live with Ivy League though)

Edit: 5. Having touchscreen will be cool. but i can live without it la cuz for me its just a flashy function.

Sorry if my post is too long. Hope sifus can help =D

Wow look like you need a powerful machine  ohmy.gif

Y510p, i7-4700MQ + Nvidia GT755M(GDDR5) + (1920x1080)@RM3399[2.7kg], 8GB, 1TB, W8.1, red backlit, swappable ODD, 120w psu, 2 yrs

*Price is negotiable as it is RSP
*
I saw that particular one, but the machine is slightly too heavy.
It is actually for my wife. Shes in love with my zenbook ux32vd, with the design and weight and all.
But i told her unfortunately it cant run heavy software that much. I only used it for meetings, presentation and probably during my overseas trip or meeting. Reason why i bought an Ultrabook.

But as for her, she needs a performance base one for study. Currently doing architecture in Manchester, she is in need of a good machine that she can use at the studio once in a while. (Shes already using my old Power house desktop in Manchester which i once used it when i was studying there before her).

So basically the laptop just need to run those few software in case of emergency changes.

for your requirements, its good to have a bigger laptop with dedicated graphics. so i would at least suggest you to take a 14 inch laptop rather than 13 inch, as those are more inclined towards business/girl's/normal/business students usage. some more, 13 inch laptops rarely have dedicated graphics to support your medium settings in dota 2. so, your options :

Dell
Inspiron 14R, i5-4200U + Nvidia GT740M@RM1849 [2.32kg], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), Linux, 6 cell; W8@RM2049

HP
Pavilion 14-N059TX, i5-4200U + Nvidia GT740M@RM2099[2.03kg], 4GB, 750GB, W8; colors: silver/black

if you want lighter or thinner, can go for the HP Pavilion 14. prices are in RSP and negotiable.

problem is... with the software required, running it on a mac is a lot of hassle. The price is quite pricey and she is not accustomed to Apple (although she is using the 5s, for a computer, she prefers windows)

Pretty sure she wouldn't mind extra weight compare to my zenbook. Since when we travel together, i only bring my ultrabook and we share.

Y510p is actually is a very solid option... just the weight is like carry brick outside (when add together with adapter, drinking water etc)

Mac just need to find alternative software for it, actually mac is just alternative choice to you (last time i see archi grad with mbp, her rendering is very good also, in fact i would say it depends how they produce the render only....) (and mostly the some mac software is cheaper compare to windows one), or last resort is just use bootcamp and run windows with it....

MSI has lighter machine(2.4kg) with specs that are close to y510p but can't promise if the warranty support and build quality (eg:ventilation) is as good as y510p..
