59. The Government at present sponsors a total of 17,000 students in universities overseas. The Government has already increased the COLA for students studying in Australia, New Zealand, Egypt and South Korea in 2006. Effective September 2007, the Government will increase the COLA for students in the United States, United Kingdom and Canada by up to 97%, almost double the current rate.

Will JPA/MARA scholars in UK be benefited by the announcement above?

Has anyone checked how much (percentage of increment) scholars in UK will get?

Thanks.

Added on September 10, 2007, 9:43 amEmm... how many intake per year for master degree (by taught course) in UK? When is/are the intake(s)? Thanks.

Y E S.

the announcement was exactly about the JPA/MARA/KPT scholars.

although i have no idea how much exactly are we gonna get. it could be anywhere between 1% to 97%, which does not tell us very much wink.gif.

usually, intakes for masters is in september/october, the same intake for the undergraduate courses. research based masters may have open intake (all year round).

usually, yes. but do check on each university via their website.

the reason is, masters by taught course doesnt have as many students as undergraduates. so it would make sense to have intakes once a year and pile everyone together. however, popular courses like MBA might have bigger number of students, hence might have more than one intake per year.

masters by research is more of an individual learning. so u dont really attend classes or what not. so they could start anytime they want.

No, your visa doesn't require you to have an airline ticket, but to collect your airline ticket you must have your passport and firm offer letter with you. (So don't go and give the visa people your passport and at the same time go and collect your air ticket)

For visa photographs, they should have white background, and only 1 copy is needed.

Btw how come applying for visa so late? When does your uni start?

malaysian universities still got bullying meh? u've watched waaaay too much TV wink.gif

there's very little cases of senior-junior bullying in the UK, and mostly are limited to the british themselves. actually, it's quite hard to find any these days bcoz of how they plan their campus. most of the universities in the UK are city campuses, meaning the universities doesnt have a real compound, but rather integrated in the city itself. so it's very, very hard for bullying to occur bcoz u're not in confined places. it's hard enough to bump with people u know in the city, let alone to fine bullying seniors biggrin.gif.

orientation week are just to get u familiar with the facilities and how to use it, as well as activities and what not. first u will register ur subjects and classes, then register for computing services, library and health. then they'll bring u around the campus to show whatever facilities they have. then u'll be shown the student clubs, sports or activities that u could join. and lastly they'll show the places where students hangout, shop, party and so on. very simple, basic stuff. u dont have to join if u dont want to, coz u can just do it urself the hardway.

in malaysia, the possibility of bullying is a wee bit higher simply bcoz they're in confined places. campuses have been designed to "isolate and incubate" the students in a small area. since u live and study in campus, it is problem waiting to happen. but i havent heard of bullying cases in a very long time, simply bcoz the rules are "if u bully, u'll get kicked out instantly". no tolerance in that.

consult your bank.

this is better rather than showing the immigration officer bank statement. just a simple letter signed by the bank branch manager stating you / your parent are financially capable.

would be better if you can get a referral letter from the British Council too. The british council rep offered us that, and that letter got us through the immigration easily.

more than enough. £500 a month is enough if you knows how to spent wisely / work part timely.

go and get an x-ray report and your medical check up report from your doctor. normally uni will send you a form to be completed by your doctor, also get a stamped and signature letter from your doctor, along with their address etc (just to show their qualification) and these all will get you through the airport medical check fast.

Added on September 14, 2007, 6:53 amas for hepatitis & meningitis vaccination, you will get it after you are registered to a GP in UK. else to save the hassle, get it in malaysia then. get a tetanus vaccination / booster dose too if you have not had it in the last ten years. just in case you accidentally get cut by rusted stuff in UK, you wont be able to make immediate appointment to see ur GP.
