hey guys, was wondering, i'll be applying for my ucas (medicine ) very soon, im in a dilemma now on which universities to choose.

I'm definitely applying to manchester and aberdeen. any more recommendations (outside london) of universities?

How would bristol sound, in terms of cost of living too, and another would be Hull, i was told has very cheap cost of living.

well thanks for your help guys.
*
From staff of newcastle, he told me newcastle is quite famous in medicine and engineering, maybe you can consider it. or else u just left the ucas applicaton blank wait until you know which uni you want only refill it. According to my experience, Manchester Uni take really damn long time to reply to UCAS till finally i give up waiting.

Went to submit my my visa today, man it was a long day. Went there at 7.45 before they opened at 8, and there were so many already waiting outside the door. Managed to get #33, and i was only done at 1pm! Lots of guys don't bring the proper documents/certified copies or fill the forms wrongly and make the numbers move so slow..

So my advise to anyone is know what you have to submit, check the VFS websites, make copies where applicable and the VFS checklist is for them to tick, not you! (You can have your own copy if you want)
*
ya i yesterday go apply visa. I go at 10am and guess what time i finish my VISA? 7PM!!! and the worse is after 5Pm there is no air condition in the room anymore, in the room you cant use hp, cant listen to ipod, cant bring psp. doh.gif So for my advice, go as early as you can, if you late u will be trap inside the room!! the security won allow you go in and out too frequently!!! And please complete your form. i See so many ppl go with empty hand and starting filling form when their q time reach. Really terrible ppl!!

malaysian universities still got bullying meh? u've watched waaaay too much TV wink.gif

there's very little cases of senior-junior bullying in the UK, and mostly are limited to the british themselves. actually, it's quite hard to find any these days bcoz of how they plan their campus. most of the universities in the UK are city campuses, meaning the universities doesnt have a real compound, but rather integrated in the city itself. so it's very, very hard for bullying to occur bcoz u're not in confined places. it's hard enough to bump with people u know in the city, let alone to fine bullying seniors biggrin.gif.

orientation week are just to get u familiar with the facilities and how to use it, as well as activities and what not. first u will register ur subjects and classes, then register for computing services, library and health. then they'll bring u around the campus to show whatever facilities they have. then u'll be shown the student clubs, sports or activities that u could join. and lastly they'll show the places where students hangout, shop, party and so on. very simple, basic stuff. u dont have to join if u dont want to, coz u can just do it urself the hardway.

in malaysia, the possibility of bullying is a wee bit higher simply bcoz they're in confined places. campuses have been designed to "isolate and incubate" the students in a small area. since u live and study in campus, it is problem waiting to happen. but i havent heard of bullying cases in a very long time, simply bcoz the rules are "if u bully, u'll get kicked out instantly". no tolerance in that.
*
erm i mean those activity that ask you do silly things, example in UKM there got 1 month orientation week mainly just for those stupid activity. Wake ppl up at 5am and don let junior sleep. And many others.... So in UK university got such silly stuff??? hmm.gif

i'll be going to UK today, just packaging my main luggage, almost 30kg
but how much hand luggage that we can bring?i heard just 1 and is there any weight limits?
*
i just arrived newcastle in UK. In my case, we whole group ( 4 ppl) which consist 3 students and 1 traveller, they allow us to bring 120kg, mean 30kg each, but we have to give kopi-o for the custom ppl about rm100. So i think is reasonable if you lucky enough.

When i arrive Newcastle, i plan to declared my food and some stationary cause inside got many can food la, chinese herb and so on. But the officer in Newcastle just ask us to go straight to the entrance without checking. So i think if you arrive in small airport, it is more easy for you to enter the Great UK.!! drool.gif

Now the problem i get is the private accommodation is so far from Newcastle University. I don understand how those student from Malaysia ( my senior ) called it is near. 40 minutes walk to school. sweat.gif i guess i have to get used to it d..

ps: Anyway, travel with Emirates is good la, if you need wait more than 4 hours in Dubai, you can ask for free meal in a shop called don know what name in the airport.

like what i say, it really depend your luck. For my experience travel with Emirates, they allow me to bring 1 hang luggage(7kg), 1 handbeg and 1 laptop beg. I know the rule stated is 1 hand luggage per person but in my group, all ppl carried 3 hand luggage. Not only us, i see plenty of students also carried quite a no of beg with them. drool.gif

that wont work. they require proof that u've settled ur accommodations for atleast 1 term (if not 1 year). hotel is not considered as term time accommodations. i mean, why would they require documents to prove u've acquired accommodations if u can just check in into a hotel?

for private accommodations, u can show the visa officers ur contract with the owner/landlord. u can also request the landlord to write a letter to u that shows u've entered into contract with him/her/them. just make sure to note the start and end of the contract, as well as contact number of the landlord.
*
but it just work for me and my 3 other friends. All using same documents. We all don have contract with the landlord, all we do is just show them our hotel booking and that it...

well i belive most of the students using postpaid since it got free mobile phone and free minutes as well. Sometimes, the package even free you ipod, xbox, ps3 and so on. So if you study 1 year or longer, i will definitely suggest you get postpaid in UK

Studying in Uk is really a big deal! I got one friend who come together with me to Newcastle suddenly decide to quit after we rent a house and already reach in Newcastle! Because of her, now 3 of us had to share a 4 room house just because of her. Is about 80 pound per month per person because of the childish girl homesick!! Really angry when think about that. SO guys if you decide to go to UK, Pls really think carefully before do so, otherwise you not only wasted money but at the same time you wasting ppl energy and ppl money as well.!!!

QUOTE(Gaza @ Sep 21 2007, 05:50 AM)
Oh that sounds really bad. So she just threw away the money she spent for tuition fees? I mean everybody feels homesick at first right, I'm currently in my 1st week in Bristol, and although in no way does it feel like home (except seeing lots of malaysians smoking around), it does provide you an opportunity to try something new. But 80 pounds a month sounds quite reasonable since 3 people are sharing a 4 room house, even per week it sounds reasonable. My accommodation on-site campus costs me 110 pounds, but some extras thrown in.

Btw, i'm using postpaid with Vodafone, but i didn't hear about that o2 thing before i bought it, but i have heard about people calling numbers to get free calls to malaysia and being arrested and sued in court, maybe it's this possibly?
*
the cost of living is varies depend which city you in. In newcastle, 80 pound per week is consider staying in a really high class place. Normally, Malaysian student will just spend 45-60 pound for living per week and 50 pound for food per month!!! The food here is so cheap that 1 huge box of kiwi only cause you 1 pound,4 yogurt only 24p!! So in my situation, 80 pound per week is really sky-high expensive in Newcastle! i can spend the extra 20 pound to ST James' Park or get a better phone, am i rite????

Beside, we just arrive in UK not more than 1 week and i can see her calling home continuously with her maxis line, and suddenly pop up a question asking is that fine for us to share a 4 room property. I don understand what so homesick at the very early moment and don want give up a try to study! what she decide is go back malaysia now and will go to australia next year in take just because her dad can visit her more often. hmm.gif

Which university in Newcastle? Nothrumbia??

BTW, i always thought that food in UK are so much expensive!  How much a ticket price to watch movie? How much a ticket price to watch a football match at st. james park? can u tell me the prices of other daily essentials?
*
Newcastle University. The food in UK is expensive if you eat outside. Example, sushi price is same as in Malaysia but different currency laugh.gif shocking.gif . Actually i just arrive in Newcastle and everything i know is from senior here. A football match in st james park is around 20-30 pound. Actually daily use is really depend how you use it. Most of the students in Malaysia tried to save their money by walking to school, cook at home and so on. Since usually Malaysian student normally stay in a house, what they do is take turn to cook and so on. However, if you eat in restaurant, you will spend more. example if you go chinese buffer in china town, only 4.99 pound per person plus 10% discount for students, and is about 30 dishes.

agree. £80 a week for accommodation is considered as high, esp. in place like newcastle. and £50 food per month is a bit difficult.  blink.gif

ya, as xcutelilgirl said, she should bear the rent until she/you get a replacement.
*
ya, actually i don really know about cost living since i just freshly arrive. £50 per month is because you cook at home and this is from all the senior who told me that. However, i believe it varies depend where you stay and how you spend. Most students from malaysia like to stay in Fenham cause there got 1 big market and selling really cheap food! The price for private accommodation is around £45 -£55 pound but you have to walk 40min to school. However, if you stay in Jesmond like me, price for living is around £55- £75. Walking distance to school is 20min. So is really depend how you spend!

which phone line is better?O2 vodafone or orange...thinking either to buy line or just pay phone becoz i already get prepaid O2, anyone have suggestion?
*
from a chinese who work in Carphone Warehouse, he told me first year student mostly apply O2 and 3. It is really hard to apply other line like T-mobile, Orange and other unless you had study 1 year in UK.

From my research, there are no such thing call best line, what you see is checkup what is the best deal in the shop. So, tried search a 12month contract so you can change new phone per year. After 1 year, you can just go Internet and get cheaper phone. But beware cause my senior say many internet offer refurnished phone instead of new phone.

hi.. i want to ask is it hsbc bank will take your money 20 pound every month if i open my account? if yes, which bank are not? btw, i'm new in bristol..
*
for me, don ever open international student acc because they charge u £5 per month. If possible, get a hsbc acc in Malaysia and ask for a reference letter, than open a UK local student acc. No fees or charges apply for local student acc. If financially can support, better have premier acc ( can be personal or share with your dad la) , than transfer money from malaysia to UK won cost you a single cent.

However, if you don have HSBC in Malaysia, than go for lloyst in UK. You can have both debit and saving acc. Debit acc no interest but saving got interest. So you can always put your extra money in saving acc.

Don ever go to Balclay because you must at least have £2000 in your debit acc and there is no interest for that. If your money fall below £2000, they will apply charges like hsbc debit acc.

For Nets, in Newcastle they actually give us 5 years metro ticket but you must have landline in UK. So i don suggest you guys go for Nets.

In a nutshell, HSBC local acc is best cause no charges and saving acc got highest interest among all bank
Lloyst is easy to open

p/s : you must get inductory letter from your University before open an acc

www.e2save.com

They have some crazy offers. Totally free phone + 1 yr tariff .. i was like WTF....
Anyone actually tried it? How does it work? Is it really free?
*
there always a catch for the deal. You can go to dialaphone.com and see they actually give ps3, xbox360 and ipod for free and the price is just same which offer in shop. So, why UK ppl so generous??? first, to apply online you must at least stay in UK for 1 year or more. Second, the phone you get actually is refurnish phone and no new phone. IF your phone got problem within the contract, it will cost you £45-£100 to repair it. So why don go to carphonewarehouse? They give free repair, brand new phone, and you can get your phone on the spot!! beside you can terminate the contract whenever you like. What you need is surrender the phone to carphonewarehouse and apply for new contract and get a brand new phone? Which 1 sound more attractive???

Supermarket there got sell instant noodles?? Not maggie la.... other brand like korean noodles....
The ticket for a football match is too expensive! Here in Malaysia, a football match cost about RM10, that is, around 2pounds and no one will watch!! lol...
the weather not hot right?? If in Malaysia, u try to walk to school and u will be sweating all the way!
Foreign students can work part time? If i'm not mistaken, last yr or this yr got new law forbidding foreign students to work!
*
no no no, china town got sell only!!! here only got see instand pizza, 12'' is like 80p to £2 in http://www.iceland.co.uk/. and instand cake as well!! no more instand noodles in UK unless you go chinatown which actually cost you 30% more exp compare to Malaysia.

about part time, you can watch 20 hours per week. but you i think you need to upgrade your visa ( i not sure).

weather here varies, in winter you may get 4 season in 1 week. example monday is sunny days, tuesday is snowly day... wed is rainning day and so on... so take care of yourself and don ever drink tap water!!!

Can we access RapidShare in UK (e.g. through the ISP at Sheffield or Manchester)? Got limitation with Premium account?

Thanks

Added on October 14, 2007, 2:49 pmDo you bring your desktop to UK? Or, do you buy there? Which option is better?

i don know they got check or not, in my case i bring my whole pirated dvd pack ( about 100+ pirated games, movie, anime, software, psp games... bla bla ) i put all this in my luggage and they didn check mine.. rclxms.gif But pls note i direct go to Newcastle, so the rule not so strict.

and for hardware stuff, i definitely think u should buy the hardware in Malaysia, the ram, memory stick, router all really expensive. Example, i bought a belkin G+ mimo router cost me 69.99 pound. I really regret i didn get it in Malaysia. Beside, bring all your usb cable, lan cable to UK as well. The cheapest price i can find for usb cable is like 10 pound. blink.gif

If you really desperate to buy in UK, i will suggest you go to ebay. Don ever enter curry digital, pc world and others.
